Reproductive planning, vitamin knowledge and use, and lifestyle risks of women attending pregnancy care with a severe mental illness
Objective Women with severe mental illnesses are a vulnerable population and little is known about their reproductive planning needs. The aim of our study was to describe rates of unintended pregnancies, postpartum contraception, identify use and knowledge of prenatal/pregnancy vitamins and identify modifiable lifestyle risks. Design Mixed methods study incorporating a cross-sectional survey and prospective pregnancy data collection Setting A multidisciplinary antenatal clinic in Australia Method Thirty-eight pregnant women with severe mental illnesses: schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar and severe post-traumatic stress disorder Main outcome measures Unintended pregnancy rates, immediate postpartum contraception, use of prenatal and pregnancy vitamins and knowledge sources, obesity, and use and cessation rates for smoking, and substances, and comorbid medical conditions Results Overall 42% of women had unintended pregnancy, with those with schizophrenia at most risk (56%). A long acting reversible contraception was inserted in 5 women (13%), with 45% having no immediate contraception prescribed prior to postnatal discharge. Women's main source of vitamin supplementation for pregnancy was from general practitioners. Prenatal folic acid use occurred in 37%, with rates differing for those with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (52%) and schizophrenia (25%). Imaging in turbid media using quasi-ballistic photons
We study by means of experiments and Monte Carlo simulations, the scattering
of light in random media, to determine the distance upto which photons travel
along almost undeviated paths within a scattering medium, and are therefore
capable of casting a shadow of an opaque inclusion embedded within the medium.
Such photons are isolated by polarisation discrimination wherein the plane of
linear polarisation of the input light is continuously rotated and the
polarisation preserving component of the emerging light is extracted by means
of a Fourier transform. This technique is a software implementation of lock-in
detection. We find that images may be recovered to a depth far in excess of
what is predicted by the diffusion theory of photon propagation. To understand
our experimental results, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to model the
random walk behaviour of the multiply scattered photons. We present a new
definition of a diffusing photon in terms of the memory of its initial
direction of propagation, which we then quantify in terms of an angular
correlation function. This redefinition yields the penetration depth of the
polarisation preserving photons. Based on these results, we have formulated a
model to understand shadow formation in a turbid medium, the predictions of

Impact of sex and gender on COVID-19 outcomes in Europe
Emerging evidence from China suggests that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is deadlier forinfected men than women with a 2.8% fatality rate being reported in Chinese men versus 1.7% in women. Further,sex-disaggregated data for COVID-19 in several European countries show a similar number of cases between thesexes, but more severe outcomes in aged men. Case fatality is highest in men with pre-existing cardiovascularconditions. The mechanisms accounting for the reduced case fatality rate in women are currently unclear but mayoffer potential to develop novel risk stratification tools and therapeutic options for women and men.Peer Reviewe

Identifying the psychosocial predictors of ultraviolet exposure to the face in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum:A study of the behavioural factors affecting clinical outcomes in this genetic disease
BACKGROUND: For patients with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), the main means of preventing skin and eye cancers is extreme protection against ultraviolet radiation (UVR), particularly for the face. We have recently developed a methodology for objectively measuring photoprotection behaviour (‘UVR dose to facial skin’) and have found that the degree of photoprotection varies greatly between patients with XP. We have previously identified factors affecting photoprotection behaviour in XP using a subjective measure of photoprotection. Here, we have used this objective methodology to identify the factors which determine photoprotection behaviour in XP. METHODS: We studied 29 psychological, social, demographic and clinical variables in 36 patients with XP. We have previously objectively measured UVR protection (by measuring the dose of UVR reaching the skin of the face over a 3-week period) in these patients. Here, we use linear mixed-effects model analysis to identify the factors which lead to the differences in degree of photoprotection observed in these patients. RESULTS: Psychosocial factors accounted for as much of the interindividual variation in photoprotection behaviour (29%) as demographic and clinical factors (24%). Psychosocial factors significantly associated with worse UVR protection included: automaticity of the behaviours, and a group of beliefs and perceptions about XP and photoprotection known to associate with poor treatment adherence in other diseases. CONCLUSIONS: We have identified factors contributing to poor photoprotection in XP. Identifying these potentially reversible psychosocial features has enabled us to design an intervention to improve photoprotection in patients with XP, aiming to prevent skin and eye cancers in these patients
