Increasing the Health Outcomes of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Oklahomans Through Tobacco Awareness and Cessation Support

As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. Prevalence rates and demographic information were collected regarding tobacco use among Deaf/hh participants. In addition, tobacco education and cessation programs were provided, and the changes in participants\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward tobacco use were tracked over a three-year period. At the end of the project, in-depth interviews were conducted to gather additional information from tobacco users. This article provides prevalence and demographic information regarding Deaf/hh individuals\u27 tobacco use in Oklahoma and outcomes of educational programs

Graduate Recital

The recital and its consequent report are the culmination of the Master\u27s candidate\u27s years of study. In order to choose his program he must become familiar with the finest compositions suitable for his vocal characteristics. He must research the musical periods and analyze the individual idiosyncrasies of the composers in order to interpret the compositions he performs. He must become aware of his voice, its strengths and weaknesses, and learn to manipulate it to produce pleasing effects. And most difficult of all, he must discipline himself to do the writing, researching, analyzing, memorizing, and rehearsing which will lead to the final goal of increased perception and knowledge necessary to the recital and report. The resultant growth helps to mold the candidate into the musician he is capable of becoming

The application of attachment theory to a psychotherapy case

M.A.The purpose of this study is to illustrate the psychotherapeutic use of Attachment Theory. Attachment Theory is an interpersonal theory which refers to the way an individual internalises an emotional-cognitive model of his relationships with his various attachment figures. These models of ways of relating are reflected in the way an individual speaks. The methodology of the study entailed conducting the semi-structured Adult Attachment Interview to elicit a psychotherapy client's narrative about his attachment relationships. A discourse analysis technique was then conducted to analyse the client's mode of speaking. In the context of the psychotherapy relationship the client showed a capacity for greater integration of previously dissociated thoughts and was able to gain some emotional relief in talking about his attachment relationships. Furthermore, Attachment Theory with its sensitivity to discourse can be seen to provide a useful framework for therapeutic practise

Informing the Financing of Universal Energy Access: An Assessment of Current Flows

Energy poverty is widely recognized as a major obstacle to economic and social development and poverty alleviation. To help inform the design of appropriate and effective policies to reduce energy poverty, we present a brief analysis of the current macro financial flows in the electricity and gas distribution sectors in developing countries. We build on the methodology used to quantify the flows of investment in the climate change area. This methodology relies on national gross fixed capital formation, overseas development assistance, and foreign direct investment. These high-level and aggregated investment figures provide a sense of scale to policy-makers, but are only a small part of the information required to design financial vehicles. In addition, these figures tend to mask numerous variations between sectors and countries, as well as trends and other temporal fluctuations. Nonetheless, for the poorest countries, one can conclude that the current flows are considerably short (at least five times) of what will be required to provide a basic level of access to clean, modern energy services to the “energy poor”.Energy Access, Energy Finance, Financial flows

Relationship between nitrate and nitrite stress responses of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough and Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20

Many heavy metal-contaminated sites where nuclear weapons have been produced contain high concentrations of nitrate. Nitrate inhibits dissimilatory sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), bacteria known to precipitate heavy metals. An understanding of nitrate stress responses in SRB is necessary to predict responses in environmental settings. Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough and Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20, model SRB, offer the opportunity to identify the physiological and genetic changes that confer nitrate resistance. It is currently thought that nitrite production mediates nitrate inhibition of SRB (He et al., 2010). However, microarray studies have revealed few gene expression changes in common between nitrate- and nitrite-inhibited D. vulgaris cells (He et al., 2010). Since it has been shown that nitrite interacts with the dissimilatory sulfite reductase (Wolfe et al., 1994), it has been assumed that sulfite reduction is the sole target of nitrite inhibition (Haveman et al., 2004). Our results point to inhibition and resistance mechanisms for both nitrate and nitrite that are independent of sulfite reduction

Creation and Curation of the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine Hackathon Dataset

In order to support innovation, the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) elected to create a collaborative computing experience called a "hackathon." The SIIM Hackathon has always consisted of two components, the event itself and the infrastructure and resources provided to the participants. In 2014, SIIM provided a collection of servers to participants during the annual meeting. After initial server setup, it was clear that clinical and imaging "test" data were also needed in order to create useful applications. We outline the goals, thought process, and execution behind the creation and maintenance of the clinical and imaging data used to create DICOM and FHIR Hackathon resources
