The agribusiness unfolds in the rural Brazilian environment as one of the most efficient and competitive in the world but the rural poverty also blunts as one of the largest social blemishes for the society. The methodology applied was the study case, a milk producers’ association, comprehending some observation, semi-structured interviews and informal conversations. The study has evidenced that the association accomplishes several development indicators, job and income generation, access to rural credit, access to new technologies and important institutional partnerships. However, the association inclusion is still very limited to the associates and the social sustainability is fragile (there is an incidence of objective participation and low subjective participation), the administrative structure demands more attention regarding to the improvement intention. There is a possible social/economical instability in case of a competition incitation. However the reality is valid, provocative and highlighted into the region for the few associative enterprises successes and high level poverty, could be considered as an agent of great importance for the local development, but it still requires further preoccupation with the social side, with cooperative/associative education and more professionalism in the administration.participation, viability, sustainability and associativism.,

Juntos: A Support Program for Families Impacted by Congenital Zika Syndrome in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The 2015-2016 Zika virus outbreak in Brazil was unprecedented and resulted in the birth of more than 3,000 children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). These children experience multiple complex health conditions and have limited services to support them and their family's needs. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND PILOTING: An existing family support program for children with cerebral palsy (Getting to Know Cerebral Palsy) was adapted to the Zika context in Brazil through expert consultation. The program was pilot tested at 2 sites among 6 groups of caregivers (total of 48 families) from August 2017 to June 2018. Group observation and focus group discussions with facilitators and participants at the end of each session informed fast-track learning, which was used to tailor the program for future groups. Fast-track learning-adjusting the intervention in real time based on gathered feedback-was found to be a helpful process to inform and hone the program from its initial concept. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The intervention, Juntos, is a facilitated participatory group program for caregivers of children who have CZS. The group sessions are cofacilitated by a parent of a child who has CZS and an allied health professional. The group meets for 10 sessions that last 4 hours. Each session includes an icebreaker, activities, and group discussions. Content covers practical information on caring for a child with a developmental disability including that caused by Zika. Psychosocial support forms an important component, and families are guided from the first week to define and develop their own communities of support. Six pilot groups were successfully run in Rio de Janeiro and Greater Salvador, Bahia. The groups gave positive feedback on acceptability and demand. CONCLUSIONS: The program has the potential to be an important tool for community health and social support services in South America in response to Zika. The program can also be applied to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities other than those caused by the Zika virus, which could be important in ensuring families of children with CZS are less isolated

Mineral inadequacy of oral diets offered to patients in a Brazilian hospital

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Introduction: While enteral diets for hospitalized patients normally follow nutrient composition guidelines, more than 90% of hospitalized patients receive oral diets with unknown mineral composition. Objective: To evaluate the mineral contents and adequacy of three types of oral diets (regular, blend and soft) and complementary snacks offered to patients of a Brazilian hospital. Methods: The amount of minerals was determined in two non-consecutive days in duplicate samples of breakfast, collation, lunch, snack, dinner, supper and a complementary snack meal. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) were used to determine the adequacy of the daily amounts served to patients. Results and discussion: The regular diet met the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances) requirements only for Mn, P and Se, while the blend diet was deficient in Ca, K and Mg, and the soft diet met RDA requirements only for P and Zn. Iron was below the RDA requirement in all diets for women in fertile age, and Na was above the safe limit of intake (UL) in all the diets. The use of complementary snack was effective in meeting RDA requirements for Cu in the regular diet, and Mn and Se in the soft diet, but promoted overconsumption of Na. Conclusions: Evident nutritional imbalances have been detected at a key interphase between nutrition and public health services, but a solution does not appear to be insurmountable. A permanent nutritional evaluation of hospital oral diets should be an integral part of routine health care in order to speed the recovery of the hospitalized patient and dispel eventual risks due to critical mineral imbalances.271288297Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
