    A new species of Mimosa (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae) from the inter-Andean dry valleys

    Mimosa arturoana (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae) is described and illustrated for the first time. This species is similar to the recently published M. lamolina and to the allopatric, Mexican M. deamii, but differs by several morphological characters, such as stems armament, secondary venation of leaflets and pubescence of vegetative organs and pods. This species should be included in the Mimosa sect. Mimosa ser. Mimosa subser. Lactifluae by its characteristic habit, armament of stems, and ecology. This finding increments the diversity of Leguminosae in the dry forests of Inter-Andean valleys of Peru, a potentially center of endemism of this family.Mimosa arturoana (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae) es descripta e ilustrada por primera vez.     Leaflet trichome micromorphology in the Dolentes-Brevipedes taxonomic complex (Mimosa L., Mimosoideae)

    We studied leaflets of 18 taxa of the genus Mimosa, specifically the Dolentes-Brevipedes taxonomic complex, focusing on micromorphology, type, shape, and density of trichomes. Within the nonglandular trichomes we described 3 types of nonbranched and 2 types of branched trichomes. We also described 2 types of stalked glandular trichomes, extending the recent classifications of trichomes in Mimosa. Multiseriate trichomes with lateral projections, which resemble incipient branching, are described here for many taxa. Most studied taxa have pubescent leaflets and show great variability in trichome density values. We also found 3 different types of blade margins with variation in type, alignment, and orientation of trichomes. Results show that the micromorphology of blade trichomes allows distinguishing groups of taxa in this complex, which could be a new tool for performing taxonomic treatment of both subseries.Instituto de Recursos BiológicosFil: Grohar, Mariana Cecilia.     A new polyploid species of Mimosa (leguminosae, mimosoideae) from the highlands of Southern Brazil

    Mimosa tucumensis (Leguminosae), a new species from M. sect. Mimosa ser. Mimosa subser. Mimosa is described and illustrated. This taxon is found in southern Brazil (Paran State), in "campos de altitude," an environment different from the typical habitat of other entities in this subseries. Mimosa tucumensis is morphologically close to M. debilis, M. velloziana, and M. sensibilis, but differs from these principally by the presence of humifuse stems with adventitious roots, considerably longer petioles and peduncles, and foliar venation. In addition, cytological characterization of this new taxon is provided and discussed in relation to the nearest species. This taxon appears to be narrowly restricted to grasslands on a handful of closely adjacent peaks in the Paran State adding to the notable endemism of this area.     A New Species of Mimosa L. ser. Bipinnatae DC. (Leguminosae) from the Cerrado: Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Insights

    Mimosa carolina (Leguminosae), a new species from the Parque Nacional Chapada das Mesas, located in the northern limit of the Brazilian Cerrado, is described and illustrated. In addition, a phylogenetic reconstruction was performed to recover the position of this species in relation to the main clades of the genus Mimosa. This new species is assigned to sect. Habbasia ser. Bipinnatae and exhibits relevant morphological differences with all described species of this series, most notably the prostate habit, glabrous stems, and absence of internal spicules. Our results indicate that this new entity is clearly nested in a strongly supported clade with other striated-corolla species of ser. Bipinnatae. Therefore, ser. Bipinnatae appears to be monophyletic, and a morphologically and ecologically cohesive group within Mimosa. An updated identification key for this series is provided.Fil: Morales, Matias.     Fire and flooding resilience in Mimosa L. of the Brazilian Pantanal

    PosterThe Pantanal ecoregion, in south-central Brazil, is one of the largest foodplains in the world. Cycles of fooding and periodic fre have been determinant to the diversity of species in the ecoregion. In the fora of Pantanal, Leguminosae is one of the most rich families, and Mimosa is its most diversifed genus. Species of this genus are widely distributed and occur in the capões, sandy ridges and monominant stands (e.g. Cambarazal, Carandazal and Paratudal), in addition to native grasslands and pasture areas. In the Cerrado ecoregion, adaptations to fre have been recognized in some species of Mimosa. However, there is no data in the Pantanal ecoregion about which species of Mimosa are resilient to fre and/or fooding.     Karyotype studies in Mimosa (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae) from Southern South America and ecological and taxonomic relationships

    In this work we studied the chromosome number and karyotype formula of seven species of Mimosa L. (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae). The chromosome number 2n = 2x = 26 for M. detinens Benth., M. hex- andra M. Micheli, M. ostenii Speg. ex Burkart and M. xanthocentra Mart. var. mansii (Benth.) Barneby are new records, while the chromosome number 2n = 2x = 26 for M. debilis var. debilis, M. urugüensis Hook. and Arn. and M. uliginosa Chodat and Hassl. confirm previous records. Karyotype formulae revealed the existence of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes, and the chromosomal asymmetry indexes did not show significant differences between taxa. The chromosome length of xerophilous and endemic M. detinens and M. ostenii differed from the rest of species, indicating that this parameter could have taxonomic value. In addition, the relationship between total chromosome length and climatic parameters showed that diploid species of marginal areas of distribution have a larger chromosome size, and that this could be related with mechanisms of ecologi- cal adaptation.Instituto de Recursos BiológicosFil: Morales, Matias.     Investigating biogeographic patterns of Rhizobium leguminosarum symbiovar viciae within the tribe Fabeae

    Presentación en diapositivasNodulation is the symbiotic association of plants and diazotrophic bacteria that results in the formation of specialized organs (nodules) and allows fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. Rhizobial nodulation is widespread in Fabaceae with both promiscuous or exclusive hosts and/or rhizobia existing. An ideal group to explore these patterns is tribe Fabeae. Fabeae includes four genera: Ervilia Link, Ervum L., Vicia L., and Lathyrus L., and around 380 species distributed almost globally. They largely nodulate with Rhizobium leguminosarum symbiovar viciae. With the aim of evaluating the biogeographic patterns of rhizobia that colonize Fabeae species using a broader sampling, the genome of 68 strains of R. leguminosarum symbiovar viciae was sequenced. The nodules were collected from Lathyrus and Vicia hosts growing in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Greece (Crete), Japan, Spain, United Kingdom and United States and cultured to single strains. The DNA was extracted and then sent to MicrobesNG for library preparation and sequencing. Reads were trimmed and draft genomes were assembled. From the contigs, three sets of genes were extracted: (1) 120 non-mobile core genes from the chromosome (2) the 16S rRNA sequence, and (3) the nodulation genes nodA, nodC and nodD. The 16S was highly conserved across the accessions and was not informative to distinguish strains or geographical patterns. However, the set of 120 core genes gave a much more resolved picture allowing genospecies identification and revealing geographical patterns. The preliminary results using the core genes indicate a trend for geographical grouping over large areas. Our analysis consistently retrieved a Japanese clade and a South American clade with the remainder (over 50 accessions) belonging to a very widespread group from Europe and North America.
