    A study of the temporal changes recorded by ERTS and their geological significance

    The temporal changes that are recorded by ERTS were evaluated for an area around Bathurst Inlet in the North West Territories. The seasons represented by the images included: early winter, spring, early summer, summer, and fall. Numerous surface characteristics (vegetation, drainage patterns, surface texture, lineament systems and topographic relief, etc.) were used to relate the change in observable features with the different seasons. It was found that the time of year when an observation is made has a strong control over the amount and type of information that can be derived by an experienced interpreter. It was concluded that a detailed study of temporal changes is an important part of any ERTS interpretation for geology

    The Grow-Shrink strategy for learning Markov network structures constrained by context-specific independences

    Markov networks are models for compactly representing complex probability distributions. They are composed by a structure and a set of numerical weights. The structure qualitatively describes independences in the distribution, which can be exploited to factorize the distribution into a set of compact functions. A key application for learning structures from data is to automatically discover knowledge. In practice, structure learning algorithms focused on "knowledge discovery" present a limitation: they use a coarse-grained representation of the structure. As a result, this representation cannot describe context-specific independences. Very recently, an algorithm called CSPC was designed to overcome this limitation, but it has a high computational complexity. This work tries to mitigate this downside presenting CSGS, an algorithm that uses the Grow-Shrink strategy for reducing unnecessary computations. On an empirical evaluation, the structures learned by CSGS achieve competitive accuracies and lower computational complexity with respect to those obtained by CSPC.Comment: 12 pages, and 8 figures.     Palomar 13: a velocity dispersion inflated by binaries ?

    Recently, combining radial velocities from Keck/HIRES echelle spectra with published proper motion membership probabilities, Cote et al (2002) observed a sample of 21 stars, probable members of Palomar 13, a globular cluster in the Galactic halo. Their projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 2.2 +/-0.4 km/s gives a mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 40 +24/-17, about one order of magnitude larger than the usual estimate for globular clusters. We present here radial velocities measured from three different CCD frames of commissioning observations obtained with the new ESO/VLT instrument FLAMES (Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph). From these data, now publicly available, we measure the homogeneous radial velocities of eight probable members of this globular cluster. A new projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 0.6-0.9 +/-0.3 km/s implies Palomar 13 mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 3-7, similar to the usual value for globular clusters. We discuss briefly the two most obvious reasons for the previous unusual mass-to-light ratio finding: binaries, now clearly detected, and more homogeneous data from the multi-fibre FLAMES spectrograph.Comment: 9 pages, 2 Postscript figure

    Seismic Stratigraphy of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean: Paleoceanographic Implications

    The collection of Leg 138 well-log and shipboard physical-property data, in conjunction with high-resolution seismic profiles, provides an opportunity to understand the paleoceanographic significance of seismic reflectors and to gain insight into the paleoceanographic evolution of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. A series of eight reflectors or reflector packages were traced between two transects connecting five Leg 138 sites. By generating synthetic seismograms at each of these sites and comparing these to the field records, the origin of these seismic reflectors was determined in terms of physical-property variations and other core measurements. In particular, these reflectors were usually associated with sharp variations in density, which in turn, are related to variations in carbonate content. Intervals with moderate or poor nannofossil preservation indices were generally restricted to intervals below the reflectors traced in this study, suggesting that dissolution played little role in producing these reflectors. However, intervals with T. longissima mats were associated with many of the reflectors (R3-b, R4, R5-t, R5-b, R6) at the three sites (847, 849, and 850) where this diatom was encountered. This suggests that the reflectors found in this study are related to productivity events, although these events manifested themselves in a different way at the sites in which T. longissima mats were not observed. Interpreted seismic stratigraphic sections were compiled from the reflector horizon data for the two transects. Along the western transect, the section between reflectors R3 and R8 thins abruptly north of l°40\u27 to l°50\u27N, suggesting that this marks the northern limit of high equatorial productivity at that time (3.9-9.5 Ma), because the seafloor is reasonably constant in depth along this transect. Unfortunately, statements about sharp productivity gradients cannot be made for the eastern transect where sediment thinning corresponds to a deepening of the seafloor and thus may be related to variations in dissolution. Finally, six reflectors were found to be associated with major paleoceanographic events; three of these reflectors correspond to those found by Mayer et al. (1985,1986) in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean, suggesting that these correspond to Pacific-wide Oceanographic events. One of these reflectors (R8-b) is caused by a pervasive dissolution event as is its central equatorial counterpart. The others (R3-b and R5-t), however, appear to be the result of productivity events in the eastern equatorial Pacific that are synchronous with dissolution events in the central equatorial Pacific. We suggest that while localized high productivity creates low carbonate intervals (and thus reflectors) in the eastern equatorial Pacific, steep gradients in the CCD result in enhanced dissolution and low carbonate intervals (and thus reflectors) in the deeper central equatorial Pacifi

    Mechanism for the failure of the Edwards hypothesis in the SK spin glass

    The dynamics of the SK model at T=0 starting from random spin configurations is considered. The metastable states reached by such dynamics are atypical of such states as a whole, in that the probability density of site energies, p(λ)p(\lambda), is small at λ=0\lambda=0. Since virtually all metastable states have a much larger p(0)p(0), this behavior demonstrates a qualitative failure of the Edwards hypothesis. We look for its origins by modelling the changes in the site energies during the dynamics as a Markov process. We show how the small p(0)p(0) arises from features of the Markov process that have a clear physical basis in the spin-glass, and hence explain the failure of the Edwards hypothesis.Comment: 5 pages, new title, modified text, additional reference

    The Non-BPS Black Hole Attractor Equation

    We study the attractor mechanism for extremal non-BPS black holes with an infinite throat near horizon geometry, developing, as we do so, a physical argument as to why such a mechanism does not exist in non-extremal cases. We present a detailed derivation of the non-supersymmetric attractor equation. This equation defines the stabilization of moduli near the black hole horizon: the fixed moduli take values specified by electric and magnetic charges corresponding to the fluxes in a Calabi Yau compactification of string theory. They also define the so-called double-extremal solutions.     Resolving the Structure of Cold Dark Matter Halos

    We examine the effects of mass resolution and force softening on the density profiles of cold dark matter halos that form within cosmological N-body simulations. As we increase the mass and force resolution, we resolve progenitor halos that collapse at higher redshifts and have very high densities. At our highest resolution we have nearly 3 million particles within the virial radius, several orders of magnitude more than previously used and we can resolve more than one thousand surviving dark matter halos within this single virialised system. The halo profiles become steeper in the central regions and we may not have achieved convergence to a unique slope within the inner 10% of the virialised region. Results from two very high resolution halo simulations yield steep inner density profiles, ρ(r)r1.4\rho(r)\sim r^{-1.4}. The abundance and properties of arcs formed within this potential will be different from calculations based on lower resolution simulations. The kinematics of disks within such a steep potential may prove problematic for the CDM model when compared with the observed properties of halos on galactic scales.Comment: Final version, to be published in the ApJLetter

    Impacts of the Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative on socio-economic inequalities in breakfast consumption among 9–11-year-old schoolchildren in Wales

    Objectives - Universal interventions may widen or narrow inequalities if disproportionately effective among higher or lower socio-economic groups. The present paper examines impacts of the Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative in Wales on inequalities in children's dietary behaviours and cognitive functioning.<p></p> Design Cluster - randomised controlled trial. Responses were linked to free school meal (FSM) entitlement via the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage databank. Impacts on inequalities were evaluated using weighted school-level regression models with interaction terms for intervention × whole-school percentage FSM entitlement and intervention × aggregated individual FSM entitlement. Individual-level regression models included interaction terms for intervention × individual FSM entitlement.<p></p> Setting - Fifty-five intervention and fifty-six wait-list control primary schools.<p></p> Subjects - Approximately 4500 children completed measures of dietary behaviours and cognitive tests at baseline and 12-month follow-up.<p></p> Results School-level models indicated that children in intervention schools ate a greater number of healthy items for breakfast than children in control schools (b = 0·25; 95 % CI 0·07, 0·44), with larger increases observed in more deprived schools (interaction term b = 1·76; 95 % CI 0·36, 3·16). An interaction between intervention and household-level deprivation was not significant. Despite no main effects on breakfast skipping, a significant interaction was observed, indicating declines in breakfast skipping in more deprived schools (interaction term b = −0·07; 95 % CI −0·15, −0·00) and households (OR = 0·67; 95 % CI 0·46, 0·98). No significant influence on inequality was observed for the remaining outcomes.<p></p> Conclusions - Universal breakfast provision may reduce socio-economic inequalities in consumption of healthy breakfast items and breakfast skipping. There was no evidence of intervention-generated inequalities in any outcomes

    Statistics of Ku-band microwave response of the United States with a satellite borne radiometer/scatterometer

    The author has identified the following significant results. The Skylab S-193 radiometer/scatterometer collected thousands of measurements of scattering coefficient and brightness temperature over various parts of the United States during the summer of 1973 at angles of incidence between vertical and about 45 deg. These measurements have been combined to produce histograms of the response at each of several angles within this range, and to establish average scattering coefficient vs angle curves with 10% and 90% exceedance levels as well. The variation of the radiometric measurements is primarily in the region from 255 K to 285 K, with very few measurements giving higher values, but a significant, though small, number giving values down to and even below 200 K. The scattering coefficient varies, for the mean, from about 0 db at 1 deg off vertical to a low in the neighborhood of -10 db at 45 deg. The variability of the scattering coefficient measurements with this coarse resolution sensor is surprisingly small. The number of distinguishable levels is slightly more for the scatterometer than for the radiometer, but the amount of variation in brightness temperature caused by the physical temperature of the ground is enough so that the scatterometer can be used to distinguish significantly more meaningful levels than the radiometer
