    Effects of Monensin on metabolic profile and feeding behavior of transition dairy cows

    Thirty-two Holstein transition cows were used to determine the effects of monensin (Rumensin, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN; 400 mg/cow daily) on metabolism and feeding behavior. Cows were assigned randomly, based on calving date, to control or monensin treatments (n = 16 per treatment) 21 days before their expected calving date, and cows remained on treatments through 21 days in milk. Feeding behavior and water intake data were collected daily. Blood samples were collected at 8 different time points during the experimental period. Monensin decreased mean and peak plasma ketone concentrations, and also decreased time between meals before and after calving. No effects of monensin supplementation were observed on milk production or other metabolic traits.     Dynamical model of the dielectric screening of conjugated polymers

    A dynamical model of the dielectric screening of conjugated polymers is introduced and solved using the density matrix renormalization group method. The model consists of a line of quantized dipoles interacting with a polymer chain. The polymer is modelled by the Pariser-Parr-Pople (P-P-P) model. It is found that: (1) Compared to isolated, unscreened single chains, the screened 1Bu- exciton binding energy is typically reduced by ca. 1 eV to just over 1 eV; (2) Covalent (magnon and bi-magnon) states are very weakly screened compared to ionic (exciton) states; (3) Screening of the 1Bu- exciton is closer to the dispersion than solvation limit.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Thermodynamics of 2D string theory

    We calculate the free energy, energy and entropy in the matrix quantum mechanical formulation of 2D string theory in a background strongly perturbed by tachyons with the imaginary Minkowskian momentum ±i/R\pm i/R (``Sine-Liouville'' theory). The system shows a thermodynamical behaviour corresponding to the temperature T=1/(2πR)T=1/(2\pi R). We show that the microscopically calculated energy of the system satisfies the usual thermodynamical relations and leads to a non-zero entropy.Comment: 13 pages, lanlmac; typos correcte

    We develop a discrete lattice implementation of the hard thermal loop effective action by the method of added auxiliary fields. We use the resulting model to measure the sphaleron rate (topological susceptibility) of Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. Our results give parametric behavior in accord with the arguments of Arnold, Son, and Yaffe, and are in quantitative agreement with the results of Moore, Hu, and Muller.Comment: 43 pages, 6 figure

    Adequacy of the US workforce in pediatric pulmonology has been a source of serious concern within the field for some time, as it has been for several pediatric subspecialties. Contributing factors have been thought to include low fill rates of fellowship training programs, aging, and retirement rates of the subspecialist population, and the perception of insufficient numbers of specialists in some regions to meet clinical care needs. Several approaches to assessing workforce needs have already been described, and stakeholder groups are currently working on additional analyses. Although the recent report by Harris et al. captured a broad snapshot of workforce perceptions of 485 pediatric pulmonologists, this study (reporting data collected in 2014) did not address the future scope of practice

    Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition

The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites.This work is financially supported by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and managerially supported from the OAD

    Substructures in lens galaxies: PG1115+080 and B1555+375, two fold configurations

    We study the anomalous flux ratio which is observed in some four-image lens systems, where the source lies close to a fold caustic. In this case two of the images are close to the critical curve and their flux ratio should be equal to unity, instead in several cases the observed value differs significantly. The most plausible solution is to invoke the presence of substructures, as for instance predicted by the Cold Dark Matter scenario, located near the two images. In particular, we analyze the two fold lens systems PG1115+080 and B1555+375, for which there are not yet satisfactory models which explain the observed anomalous flux ratios. We add to a smooth lens model, which reproduces well the positions of the images but not the anomalous fluxes, one or two substructures described as singular isothermal spheres. For PG1115+080 we consider a smooth model with the influence of the group of galaxies described by a SIS and a substructure with mass ∌105M⊙\sim 10^{5} M_{\odot} as well as a smooth model with an external shear and one substructure with mass ∌108M⊙\sim 10^{8} M_{\odot} . For B1555+375 either a strong external shear or two substructures with mass ∌107M⊙\sim 10^{7} M_{\odot} reproduce the data quite well.Comment: 26 pages, updated bibliography, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

    Improving Scalability and Maintenance of Software for High-Performance Scientific Computing by Combining MDE and Frameworks

    International audienceIn recent years, numerical simulation has attracted increasing interest within industry and among academics. Paradoxically, the development and maintenance of high performance scientific computing software has become more complex due to the diversification of hardware architectures and their related programming languages and libraries. In this paper, we share our experience in using model-driven development for numerical simulation software. Our approach called MDE4HPC proposes to tackle development complexity by using a domain specific modeling language to describe abstract views of the software. We present and analyse the results obtained with its implementation when deriving this abstract model to target Arcane, a development framework for 2D and 3D numerical simulation software
