Non-binding signals: are they effective or ineffectual?

    Get PDF
Companies often send non-binding messages to their competitors, to consumers, to channel members and to various other recipients. When such messages are in the form of price signals, they tend to make antitrust authorities uneasy since it is widely believed that price signaling can and does serve as a collusion facilitating mechanism. We conducted experimental posted-offer markets with multiple competitive equilibria, and found that contrary to expectations, markets in which sellers could engage in cheap talk had lower contract prices than markets without cheap talk opportunities.posted-offer markets

Experimental Economics Research: Is there an alternative to having huge research budgets?

    Get PDF
The need to pay subjects to participate in experiments places a major financial burden on experimental economists. In this paper, we conduct dictator games and find that there is no difference in the way student subjects split money and extra-credit points, an encouraging result that suggests that giving course points could be a viable alternative to giving out cash in economic experiments.dictator games

Exploitation of the self in community-based software production - workers’ freedoms or firm foundations?

    Get PDF
Braverman and other Marxist analysts revealed inequalities and power relations based upon labour regulation within the industrial capitalist production model. However, it can generally be agreed by both those on the left and right of the political spectrum that such contemporary community-based models of production of software as are found within FS/OS represent dramatically different production techniques than those devised by Ford and Taylor in the industrial age. In the Taylorist industrial model, Scientific Management's conceptualization of the worker demanded that ‘brain work’ should be ‘removed from the shop and centred in the planning or laying-out department’ (Taylor 1903[1998]: 30). By contrast, in sexy new informational-community-based models of production, only ‘brain work’ matters. Despite Foucault’s insistence on the link between knowledge and power within ‘concrete practices', scholars have not adequately considered issues relating to the precise nature of power relations and agency as knowledge is produced in the new accumulation regime of the post-Fordist information economy. Contemporary social science literature frequently makes the assumption that knowledge has become a product in a qualitatively new manner, but tends not to critically examine some of the negative consequences of how lucrative knowledge is formed

Dialects Accents and Intelligence: A Study on Dialectal Perceptions

    Get PDF
Speech language pathologists are given the tools to help clients with a wide range of pathologies. Issues relating to speech, hearing, swallowing, etc can all benefit from a Speech language pathologist\u27s insight. One area that can be difficult is dialect. People across America speak with many different dialects and speech language pathologists are taught to recognize these differences but not correct them. Dialect showcases culture but does not define intelligence. Dialects like African American Venacular English are rule governed systems of communication (Carter, 2012). The research done on AAVE is seemingly endless (Baugh, 1983; Pearson,2013; Robinson,2011; Carter 2010; Bronstein,1970......) and many of them compare AAVE to Standard American English(SAE). Very few studies, however, look at other dialects and even fewer compare these dialects to something other than SAE. This study compares African American Vernacular English, Standard American English, and Arabic Accented(AAccented) English in the areas of perceived likability and intelligence. 30 adults listened to three different voice samples. Each sample featured a speaker of one of the tested dialects/accents. They then completed a survey rating each speaker\u27s likeability and intelligence. I hypothesized three things: (1) The speaker of AAVE will be perceived as less intelligent and less likeable than other dialectal speakers, (2) The speakers of SAE will be perceived as more likable and more intelligent than the dialectal speakers, and (3 )The speaker of AAccented speech will be perceived as more intelligent and more likeable than AAV, but less intelligent and likeable than speakers of SAE. These findings may be useful in changing the way SLP\u27s think about dialects and accents.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2016/1021/thumbnail.jp

Portrayals of Gender and Race in Instagram Advertising: An Exploratory Content Analysis

    Get PDF
Race and gender stereotyping is a longstanding problem in the world of advertising. This research utilized content and statistical analysis to answer three questions regarding race and gender stereotyping in Instagram advertising: (1) what portrayals are being shown? (2) how are these portrayals being shown? And (3) are diverse advertisements reinforcing or challenging stereotypes? Tweny advertisements were chosen off Instagram to analyze. Through an analysis of literature on the topic, a code book defining race, person of color, sex, gender, and gender expression was created. Using these variables and classifying the ads as a stereotype/counterstereotype/neutral, allowed for the creation of a Chi Square, a statistical test used to identify a significant relationship between multiple variables. This exploratory study does not suggest that there was gender or racial stereotyping in the sample collected and analyzed

    Dark Matter Searche with GLAST

The Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), scheduled to be launched in fall 2007, is the next generation satellite for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. The Large Area Telescope (LAT), GLAST main instrument, with a wide field of view (> 2 sr), a large effective area (> 8000 cm^2 at 1 GeV) and 20 MeV - 300 GeV energy range, will provide excellent high energy gamma-ray observations for Dark Matter searches. In this paper we examine the potential of the LAT to detect gamma-rays coming from WIMPS annihilation in the context of supersymmetry. As an example, two search regions are investigated: the galactic center and the galactic satellites.Comment: Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 36th COSPAR proceeding accepted for publication in "Advances in Space Research

Symbol and mood in Tennyson\u27s nature poetry

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to show Tennyson\u27s preoccupation with nature in his poetry, his use of her as a projector of moods and symbolism, the interrelation of landscape with depth of feeling and narrative or even simple picturesqueness. Widely celebrated as the supreme English poet and often called the Victorian Oracle, Tennyson may well be considered the best exemplar of the nineteenth century. T.S. Eliot acclaimed his poetic greatness because of his abundance, variety, and complete competence. In addition to these positive attributes he displayed elements typical of the Victorian Age, dignity, seriousness, industrious application. More importantly, Tennyson was possessed of a real empathy with nature in the multiplicity of her vestments. She supported his moods, strengthened his designs, and provided harmonious backdrops for his lyrical or didactic purposes. In his alliance with her Tennyson employed the voice of nature poignantly, bleakly, beautifully, in portrayal as natural as his inspiration
