The Bak-Sneppen Model on Scale-Free Networks
We investigate by numerical simulations and analytical calculations the
Bak-Sneppen model for biological evolution in scale-free networks. By using
large scale numerical simulations, we study the avalanche size distribution and
the activity time behavior at nodes with different connectivities. We argue the
absence of a critical barrier and its associated critical behavior for infinite
size systems. These findings are supported by a single site mean-field analytic
treatment of the model.Comment: 5 pages and 3 eps figures. Final version appeared in Europhys. Let

We have reported a case report about a multicentrĂc lymphosarcoma in a dog and its evolution with an immunochemotherapeutic protocol. We noticed a total regresion of the tumor at the end of the treatment
Emerging properties of financial time series in the “Game of Life”
We explore the spatial complexity of Conway’s “Game of Life,” a prototypical cellular automaton by means of a geometrical procedure generating a two-dimensional random walk from a bidimensional lattice with periodical boundaries. The one-dimensional projection of this process is analyzed and it turns out that some of its statistical properties resemble the so-called stylized facts observed in financial time series. The scope and meaning of this result are discussed from the viewpoint of complex systems. In particular, we stress how the supposed peculiarities of financial time series are, often, overrated in their importance

Antisymmetrized molecular dynamics of wave packets with stochastic incorporation of Vlasov equation
On the basis of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) of wave packets
for the quantum system, a novel model (called AMD-V) is constructed by the
stochastic incorporation of the diffusion and the deformation of wave packets
which is calculated by Vlasov equation without any restriction on the one-body
distribution. In other words, the stochastic branching process in molecular
dynamics is formulated so that the instantaneous time evolution of the averaged
one-body distribution is essentially equivalent to the solution of Vlasov
equation. Furthermore, as usual molecular dynamics, AMD-V keeps the many-body
correlation and can naturally describe the fluctuation among many channels of
the reaction. It is demonstrated that the newly introduced process of AMD-V has
drastic effects in heavy ion collisions of 40Ca + 40Ca at 35 MeV/nucleon,
especially on the fragmentation mechanism, and AMD-V reproduces the
fragmentation data very well. Discussions are given on the interrelation among
the frameworks of AMD, AMD-V and other microscopic models developed for the
nuclear dynamics.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX with revtex and epsf, embedded postscript figure
Simultaneous Water Vapor and Dry Air Optical Path Length Measurements and Compensation with the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer
The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer uses a near-infrared camera to
measure the optical path length variations between the two AO-corrected
apertures and provide high-angular resolution observations for all its science
channels (1.5-13 m). There is however a wavelength dependent component to
the atmospheric turbulence, which can introduce optical path length errors when
observing at a wavelength different from that of the fringe sensing camera.
Water vapor in particular is highly dispersive and its effect must be taken
into account for high-precision infrared interferometric observations as
described previously for VLTI/MIDI or the Keck Interferometer Nuller. In this
paper, we describe the new sensing approach that has been developed at the LBT
to measure and monitor the optical path length fluctuations due to dry air and
water vapor separately. After reviewing the current performance of the system
for dry air seeing compensation, we present simultaneous H-, K-, and N-band
observations that illustrate the feasibility of our feedforward approach to
stabilize the path length fluctuations seen by the LBTI nuller.Comment: SPIE conference proceeding
Magnetization reversal driven by low dimensional chaos in a nanoscale ferromagnet
Energy-efficient switching of magnetization is a central problem in nonvolatile magnetic storage and magnetic neuromorphic computing. In the past two decades, several efficient methods of magnetic switching were demonstrated including spin torque, magneto-electric, and microwave-assisted switching mechanisms. Here we experimentally show that low-dimensional magnetic chaos induced by alternating spin torque can strongly increase the rate of thermally-activated magnetic switching in a nanoscale ferromagnet. This mechanism exhibits a well-pronounced threshold character in spin torque amplitude and its efficiency increases with decreasing spin torque frequency. We present analytical and numerical calculations that quantitatively explain these experimental findings and reveal the key role played by low-dimensional magnetic chaos near saddle equilibria in enhancement of the switching rate. Our work unveils an important interplay between chaos and stochasticity in the energy assisted switching of magnetic nanosystems and paves the way towards improved energy efficiency of spin torque memory and logic
