    Prediction of the annual performance of marine organic Rankine cycle power systems

    The increasing awareness about the environmental impact of shipping and the increasingly stricter regulations introduced by the International Maritime Organization are driving the development of solutions to reduce the pollutant emissions from ships. While some previous studies focused on the implementation of a specific technology, others considered a wider perspective and investigated the feasibility of the integration of various technologies on board vessels. Among the screened technologies, organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power systems represent a viable solution to utilize the waste heat contained in the main engine exhaust gases to produce additional power for on board use. The installation of ORC power systems on board ships could result in a reduction of the CO2 emissions by 5 – 10 %. Although a number of methods to derive the optimal design of ORC units in marine applications have been proposed, these methods are complex, computationally expensive and require specialist knowledge to be included as part of a general optimization procedure to define the optimal set of technologies to be implemented on board a vessel. This study presents a novel method to predict the performance of ORC units installed on board vessels, based upon the characteristics of the main engine exhaust gases and the ship sailing profile. The method is not computationally intensive, and is therefore suitable to be used in the context of large optimization problems, such as holistic optimization and evaluation of a ship performance given the operational profile, weather and route.     Invertebrados continentales de las Islas Columbretes. Nuevas especies

    The terrestrial invertebrate fauna of the protected archipelago of Columbretes is poorly known. Moreover, the few existing studies are centered on its main island, Illa Grossa. Herein we present the list of invertebrate species not cited so far in the archipelago, results of a combination of pitfall trap catches, direct visual observations, and random collections performed in Illa Grossa as well as in three additional islets of this archipelago. The first method resulted in 14.830 specimens collected from 2008-2011. The highest number of individuals collected by this method were tenebrionid beetles. The other two methods provided 514 records for the period 2004-2013. In total, 45 new records corresponding to 40 genera in 16 families were identified. Most of the new species could not be regularly found during the whole sampling period. Some typical of anthropogenic habitats species were found (i.e., Cydnus aterrimus, Gryllus bimaculatus). Remarkably, some species with limited dispersal abilities and not common in small islands (i.e., Cebrio superbus) have been found.La fauna terrestre de invertebrados del archipiélago protegido de Columbretes es poco conocida. Además, los pocos estudios existentes se centran en su isla principal, Illa Grossa. Aquí presentamos el listado de especies de invertebrados no registradas, hasta el momento, en el archipiélago, resultados obtenidos mediante una combinación de capturas con trampas de caída, avistamientos y recolecciones aleatorias realizadas tanto en Illa Grossa como en otros tres islotes de este archipiélago. Mediante el primer método se recolectaron un total de 14.830 especímenes entre 2008-2011. La mayor cantidad de individuos recolectados mediante este método resultaron ser coleópteros tenebriónidos. Los otros dos métodos proporcionaron 514 registros para el período 2004-2013. En total, se han identificado 45 nuevos taxones correspondientes a 40 géneros y 16 familias. La mayoría de las nuevas especies encontradas no fueron frecuentes a lo largo del período de muestreo. Entre ellas, figuran especies típicas de hábitats antrópicos (p.e. Cydnus aterrimus o Gryllus bimaculatus). Sorprendentemente, también se localizaron en ocasiones especies con capacidades de dispersión limitadas y no presentes en islas pequeñas (p.e. Cebrio superbus)

    Immune Profiling of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells at Pancreas Acute Rejection Episodes in Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Recipients

    Profiling of circulating immune cells provides valuable insight to the pathophysiology of acute rejection in organ transplantation. Herein we characterized the peripheral blood mononuclear cells in simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant recipients. We conducted a retrospective analysis in a biopsy-matched cohort (n = 67) and compared patients with biopsy proven acute rejection (BPAR; 41%) to those without rejection (No-AR). We observed that CD3+ T cells, both CD8+ and CD4+, as well as CD19+ B cells were increased in patients with BPAR, particularly in biopsies performed in the early post-transplant period (<3 months). During this period immune subsets presented a good discriminative ability (CD4+ AUC 0.79; CD8+ AUC 0.80; B cells AUC 0.86; p < 0.05) and outperformed lipase (AUC 0.62; p = 0.12) for the diagnosis of acute rejection. We further evaluated whether this could be explained by differences in frequencies prior to transplantation. Patients presenting with early post-transplant rejection (<3 months) had a significant increase in T-cell frequencies pre-transplant, both CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells (p < 0.01), which were associated with a significant inferior rejection-free graft survival.     A modular synthetic device to calibrate promoters

    In this contribution, a design of a synthetic calibration genetic circuit to characterize the relative strength of different sensing promoters is proposed and its specifications and performance are analyzed via an effective mathematical model. Our calibrator device possesses certain novel and useful features like modularity (and thus the possibility of being used in many different biological contexts), simplicity, being based on a single cell, high sensitivity and fast response. To uncover the critical model parameters and the corresponding parameter domain at which the calibrator performance will be optimal, a sensitivity analysis of the model parameters was carried out over a given range of sensing protein concentrations (acting as input). Our analysis suggests that the half saturation constants for repression, sensing and difference in binding cooperativity (Hill coefficients) for repression are the key to the performance of the proposed device. They furthermore are determinant for the sensing speed of the device, showing that it is possible to produce detectable differences in the repression protein concentrations and in turn in the corresponding fluorescence in less than two hours. This analysis paves the way for the design, experimental construction and validation of a new family of functional genetic circuits for the purpose of calibrating promoters.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization; Schemes, Use Cases and Standardization

    Traditionally, the media consumption model has been a passive and isolated activity. However, the advent of media streaming technologies, interactive social applications, and synchronous communications, as well as the convergence between these three developments, point to an evolution towards dynamic shared media experiences. In this new model, geographically distributed groups of consumers, independently of their location and the nature of their end-devices, can be immersed in a common virtual networked environment in which they can share multimedia services, interact and collaborate in real-time within the context of simultaneous media content consumption. In most of these multimedia services and applications, apart from the well-known intra and inter-stream synchronization techniques that are important inside the consumers playout devices, also the synchronization of the playout processes between several distributed receivers, known as multipoint, group or Inter-destination multimedia synchronization (IDMS), becomes essential. Due to the increasing popularity of social networking, this type of multimedia synchronization has gained in popularity in recent years. Although Social TV is perhaps the most prominent use case in which IDMS is useful, in this paper we present up to 19 use cases for IDMS, each one having its own synchronization requirements. Different approaches used in the (recent) past by researchers to achieve IDMS are described and compared.     Desarrollo de una plataforma computacional para el modelado metabólico de microorganismos

    La Biología Sintética (BS) se centra en el diseño y la construcción de sistemas genéticos artificiales, capaces de desarrollar una función específica después de haber sido introducidos en un sistema vivo. Con el desarrollo de la BS, se observa una nueva generación de bioingenieros que desarrollan complejos circuitos biológicos genéticos con un alto nivel de integración. La mejora de esta disciplina científica tiene por objeto establecer un marco computacional y conceptual que dé asistencia al desarrollo de sistemas biológicos artificiales modulares basándose en una metodología ingenieril y sistemática, para lo que se necesita proveer a la próxima generación de diseñadores en Biología Sintética y a los futuros biotecnólogos e ingenieros biológicos de nuevas herramientas computacionales integradas en un entorno común para el análisis de fenotipos metabólicos, el diseño de nuevos circuitos genéticos complejos y la visualización de mapas metabólicos. Como resultado de esta investigación se obtiene la plataforma Hydra (Hybrid Draw and Routes Analysis), que integra diversas herramientas para el diseño, análisis y visualización de las redes metabólicas.Synthetic biology focuses on the design and construction of artificial genetic systems that are capable of carrying out a specific function after being inserted into a living system. With the development of synthetic biology a new generation of bioengineers has appeared who develop complex, highly integrated genetic biological pathways. The improvement of this scientific discipline aims to establish a computational and conceptual framework that will support the development of modular artificial biological systems based on an engineering and systematic methodology. To achieve this, it will be necessary to provide new integrated computational tools in a common environment for the analysis of metabolic phenotypes, the design of new complex genetic pathways and the visualisation of metabolic maps to the next generation of designers in synthetic biology and future biotechnologists and biological engineers. A result of this research is the Hydra platform (Hybrid Draw and Routes Analysis) that integrates various tools for the design, analysis, and visualisation of metabolic networks.Ciencias Experimentale
