A Neurocomputational Model of Grounded Language Comprehension and Production at the Sentence Level

While symbolic and statistical approaches to natural language processing have become undeniably impressive in recent years, such systems still display a tendency to make errors that are inscrutable to human onlookers. This disconnect with human processing may stem from the vast differences in the substrates that underly natural language processing in artificial systems versus biological systems. To create a more relatable system, this dissertation turns to the more biologically inspired substrate of neural networks, describing the design and implementation of a model that learns to comprehend and produce language at the sentence level. The model's task is to ground simulated speech streams, representing a simple subset of English, in terms of a virtual environment. The model learns to understand and answer full-sentence questions about the environment by mimicking the speech stream of another speaker, much as a human language learner would. It is the only known neural model to date that can learn to map natural language questions to full-sentence natural language answers, where both question and answer are represented sublexically as phoneme sequences. The model addresses important points for which most other models, neural and otherwise, fail to account. First, the model learns to ground its linguistic knowledge using human-like sensory representations, gaining language understanding at a deeper level than that of syntactic structure. Second, analysis provides evidence that the model learns combinatorial internal representations, thus gaining the compositionality of symbolic approaches to cognition, which is vital for computationally efficient encoding and decoding of meaning. The model does this while retaining the fully distributed representations characteristic of neural networks, providing the resistance to damage and graceful degradation that are generally lacking in symbolic and statistical approaches. Finally, the model learns via direct imitation of another speaker, allowing it to emulate human processing with greater fidelity, thus increasing the relatability of its behavior. Along the way, this dissertation develops a novel training algorithm that, for the first time, requires only local computations to train arbitrary second-order recurrent neural networks. This algorithm is evaluated on its overall efficacy, biological feasibility, and ability to reproduce peculiarities of human learning such as age-correlated effects in second language acquisition

Collaborative logic and generation of collective knowledge: scope and tensions in the relation research-society

Algunos de quienes desarrollamos nuestra labor de investigación en el sistema de C y T nacional hemos definido que nuestro enfoque es colaborativo. En esta nota presento cómo me inicié en esta manera de trabajar, recorro algunos alcances y planteo también tensiones de este enfoque. A partir de ello voy identificando interrogantes, que no buscan ser contestados aquí sino ser sometidos a debate público. En este sentido, este escrito es un ensayo meditativo. Puntualizo hacia el final muy sintéticamente conceptos de la etnografía, la sociolingüística de la interacción y la práctica en organizaciones auto-gestionadas, pertinentes para este planteo.Some of us who work in the National Science and Technology System have defi ned our research framework as collaborative. In this essay I first introduce the way in which I started working with that orientation, describe some of the results achieved, and then state some of the challenges that arose. Throughout the piece I also pose questions in order to present them for public debate. Learning devices, self-managed groups, autonomy as a project

El análisis presentado aquí forma parte de una investigación en curso que indaga acerca de las relaciones entre autogestión como práctica/discurso y autonomía como proyecto. Se describen primero las líneas centrales del marco de trabajo para lo cual se toman referencias de diferentes disciplinas. Luego se presenta un análisis que hace visible cómo la construcción de aprendizaje vinculado a la autogestión va produciendo la posibilidad de crear algo nuevo a partir de transitar algunas tensiones, por ejemplo, las vinculadas a líneas de estratificación y líneas de creatividad o las relacionadas a la participación directa y la descentralización, sin rupturas oposicionales entre unas u otras formas. Se ha buscado contrastar en la discusión y conclusiones qué posibilidades de interpretación nos brinda una elaboración del concepto de dispositivo, tomándolo desde la filosofía, para entender cómo se construye la autonomía como práctica, discurso y proyecto.The analysis presented here is framed in an ongoing study that focuses on the relationship between self-management (as discursive and cultural practices) and autonomy as a Project. I start by describing the main concepts guiding the research conceptual framework, which is based upon several different disciplinary approaches. I then present a detailed analysis of how knowledge construction on self-management rests on the possibility of creating something anew by participants. In turn, this process of creation is explicitly related to facing tensions inherent to stratification and innovation, and/or direct participation and de-centralization, without necessarily choosing amongst them but by considering them both as part of the process. In the conclusions I discuss the analysis presented by contrasting it with an interpretation of the concept of device, as it is understood by different authors in the field of Philosophy, stressing the relevance of this concept to understand autonomy as a cultural practice, as a set of discourses, and as a Project.Fil: Heras Monner Sans, Ana Ines. Ampliando la mirada: aportes de la etnografía y la sociolingüística al estudio de los procesos locales

En este escrito se presentan algunas reflexiones sobre el uso de un marco de trabajo que combina etnografía y sociolingüística para el estudio de procesos locales y su vinculación con política pública. Las reflexiones, basadas en diez años de experiencia en el estudio de problemáticas de desarrollo humano a nivel local, permiten ponderar tanto la necesidad como la factibilidad de usar dicho enfoque combinado. Se presentan, además, resultados específicos de análisis realizados en diferentes localidades de la Argentina con el encuadre mencionado, para responder a los siguientes interrogantes: ¿qué aspectos resultan visibles al utilizar este enfoque en la documentación y análisis de casos particulares en terreno? ¿qué lenguajes resultan indispensables para realizar este tipo de documentación y qué análisis permite el uso combinado de dichos lenguajes (documentación escrita, audiovisual, aural, fotográfica, de archivo, etc.)? ¿qué actores sociales y tramas aparecen al ser estudiadas de esta manera, de forma tal que otros modos no alcanzarían a revelarlas? In search of autonomy: a sociolinguistic analysis of assemblytype meetings

Este ensayo presenta un análisis de prácticas relativas a la construcción de proyectos de autonomía, a los que se define como los que permiten participación directa en la construcción de los acuerdos/la norma, y en su aplicación, y los que permiten una posibilidad de interrogación acerca de los sentidos construidos. Son también aquéllos que se orientan hacia la equidad, la justicia, la libertad y la verdad, entendida esta última como la posibilidad de examinar diferentes perspectivas y producir un conocimiento crítico. Se analizan prácticas de instancias asamblearias, en el marco general de la construcción de la política, la cual es concebida, siguiendo a Hannah Arendt, como un campo de presentación y sostén de posición, y de argumentación y examen de las diferencias, para generar acuerdos que, al ponderarlas, permitan una acción que las tenga en cuenta. Esta acepción nos remite no solamente los asuntos internos a estos proyectos, sino también a las formas de actuar/pensar que éstos proponen a la sociedad en que se insertan. Nuestro análisis muestra cómo el dispositivo asambleario, y los mecanismos interactivamente generados en él entre sus miembros, permiten tomas de decisión a partir de ponderar lo diferente y construir sobre ello.In this essay I analize everyday practices and discourses concerning the construction of autonomy. It is argued that autonomous projects are those oriented by direct participation of their members in the generation and application of norms and expectations, as well as those which are characterized by a search for equity, justice, freedom and truth, contextualizing the latter as a way of pondering different points of view and constructing critical knowledge precisely because these differences are taken into account. We focus our analysis on what counts as politics, welcoming a basic definition on the term developed by Hannah Arendt: a field in which positions are taken, arguments are made, and differences are examined, and as a result, a course of action is taken. I examine not only what is particular or specific of the cases analyzed in relation to their internal affairs, but also what they provide for the larger social and political contexts in terms of a different way of constructing what is possible and meaningful. The analysis elucidates the specific ways (mechanisms) by which members construct basic agreements, pondering their differences, and creating a new course of action.Fil: Heras Monner Sans, Ana Ines.
