    Observing a Light CP-Violating Higgs Boson in Diffraction

    Light CP-violating Higgs bosons with mass lower than 70 GeV might have escaped detection in direct searches at the LEP collider. They may remain undetected in conventional search channels at the Tevatron and LHC. In this Letter we show that exclusive diffractive reactions may be able to probe for the existence of these otherwise elusive Higgs particles. As a prototype example, we calculate diffractive production cross-sections of the lightest Higgs boson within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit CP violation. Our analysis shows that the challenging regions of parameter space corresponding to a light CP-violating Higgs boson might be accessible at the LHC provided suitable proton tagging detectors are installed.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, version as to appear in Phys.     Adaptive Transmission Techniques for Mobile Satellite Links

    Adapting the transmission rate in an LMS channel is a challenging task because of the relatively fast time variations, of the long delays involved, and of the difficulty in mapping the parameters of a time-varying channel into communication performance. In this paper, we propose two strategies for dealing with these impairments, namely, multi-layer coding (MLC) in the forward link, and open-loop adaptation in the return link. Both strategies rely on physical-layer abstraction tools for predicting the link performance. We will show that, in both cases, it is possible to increase the average spectral efficiency while at the same time keeping the outage probability under a given threshold. To do so, the forward link strategy will rely on introducing some latency in the data stream by using retransmissions.     Evaluating Midwifery Units (EMU): A prospective cohort study of freestanding midwifery units in New South Wales, Australia

Objective: To compare maternal and neonatal birth outcomes and morbidities associated with the intention to give birth in two freestanding midwifery units and two tertiary-level maternity units in New South Wales, Australia. Design: Prospective cohort study. Participants: 494 women who intended to give birth at freestanding midwifery units and 3157 women who intended to give birth at tertiary-level maternity units. Participants had low risk, singleton pregnancies and were at less than 28+0 weeks gestation at the time of booking. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Primary outcomes were mode of birth, Apgar score of less than 7 at 5 min and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit or special care nursery. Secondary outcomes were onset of labour, analgesia, blood loss, management of third stage of labour, perineal trauma, transfer, neonatal resuscitation, breastfeeding, gestational age at birth, birth weight, severe morbidity and mortality. Results: Women who planned to give birth at a freestanding midwifery unit were significantly more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth (AOR 1.57; 95% CI 1.20 to 2.06) and significantly less likely to have a caesarean section (AOR 0.65; 95% CI 0.48 to 0.88). There was no significant difference in the AOR of 5 min Apgar scores, however, babies from the freestanding midwifery unit group were significantly less likely to be admitted to neonatal intensive care or special care nursery (AOR 0.60; 95% CI 0.39 to 0.91). Analysis of secondary outcomes indicated that planning to give birth in a freestanding midwifery unit was associated with similar or reduced odds of intrapartum interventions and similar or improved odds of indicators of neonatal well-being. Conclusions: The results of this study support the provision of care in freestanding midwifery units as an alternative to tertiary-level maternity units for women with low risk pregnancies at the time of booking

    Neon and Sulfur Abundances of Planetary Nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds

    The chemical abundances of neon and sulfur for 25 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds are presented. These abundances have been derived using mainly infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The implications for the chemical evolution of these elements are discussed. A comparison with similarly obtained abundances of Galactic PNe and HII regions and Magellanic Clouds HII regions is also given. The average neon abundances are 6.0x10(-5) and 2.7x10(-5) for the PNe in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds respectively. These are ~1/3 and 1/6 of the average abundances of Galactic planetary nebulae to which we compare. The average sulfur abundances for the LMC and SMC are respectively 2.7x10(-6) and 1.0x10(-6). The Ne/S ratio (23.5) is on average higher than the ratio found in Galactic PNe (16) but the range of values in both data sets is similar for most of the objects. The neon abundances found in PNe and HII regions agree with each other. It is possible that a few (3-4) of the PNe in the sample have experienced some neon enrichment, but for two of these objects the high Ne/S ratio can be explained by their very low sulfur abundances.     Lyman-alpha absorption around nearby galaxies

    We have used STIS aboard HST to search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) absorption lines in the outer regions of eight nearby galaxies using background QSOs and AGN as probes. Lya lines are detected within a few hundred km/s of the systemic velocity of the galaxy in all cases. We conclude that a background line-of-sight which passes within 26-200 h-1 kpc of a foreground galaxy is likely to intercept low column density neutral hydrogen with log N(HI) >~ 13.0. The ubiquity of detections implies a covering factor of ~ 100% for low N(HI) gas around galaxies within 200 h-1 kpc. We discuss the difficulty in trying to associate individual absorption components with the selected galaxies and their neighbors, but show that by degrading our STIS data to lower resolutions, we are able to reproduce the anti-correlation of Lya equivalent width and impact parameter found at higher redshift. We also show that the equivalent width and column density of Lya complexes (when individual components are summed over ~ 1000 km/s) correlate well with a simple estimate of the volume density of galaxies brighter than M(B) = -17.5 at the same redshift as a Lya complex. We do not reject the hypothesis that the selected galaxies are directly responsible for the observed Lya lines, but our analysis indicates that absorption by clumpy intragroup gas is an equally likely explanation.     Weighted network modules

    The inclusion of link weights into the analysis of network properties allows a deeper insight into the (often overlapping) modular structure of real-world webs. We introduce a clustering algorithm (CPMw, Clique Percolation Method with weights) for weighted networks based on the concept of percolating k-cliques with high enough intensity. The algorithm allows overlaps between the modules. First, we give detailed analytical and numerical results about the critical point of weighted k-clique percolation on (weighted) Erdos-Renyi graphs. Then, for a scientist collaboration web and a stock correlation graph we compute three-link weight correlations and with the CPMw the weighted modules. After reshuffling link weights in both networks and computing the same quantities for the randomised control graphs as well, we show that groups of 3 or more strong links prefer to cluster together in both original graphs.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

    Characterization of ocular clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from non-contact lens related keratitis patients from south India

    P. aeruginosa is the most common Gram-negative organism causing bacterial keratitis. Pseudomonas utilizes various virulence mechanisms to adhere and colonize in the host tissue. In the present study, we examined virulence factors associated with thirty-four clinical P. aeruginosa isolates collected from keratitis patients seeking care at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. The virulence-associated genes in all the isolates were genotyped and characteristics such as antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm formation, swarming motility, pyoverdine production and cell cytotoxicity were analyzed. All the isolates showed the presence of genes related to biofilm formation, alkaline proteases and elastases; however, there was a difference in the presence of genes related to the type III secretion system (T3SS). A higher prevalence of exoU+ genotype was noted in the drug-resistant isolates. All the isolates were capable of forming biofilms and more than 70% of the isolates showed good swarming motility. Pyoverdine production was not associated with the T3SS genotype. In the cytotoxicity assay, the presence of exoS, exoU or both resulted in higher cytotoxicity compared to the absence of both the genes. Overall, our results suggest that the T3SS profile is a good indicator of P. aeruginosa virulence characteristics and the isolates lacking the effector genes may have evolved alternate mechanisms of colonization in the host

    Human Amniocytes Are Receptive to Chemically Induced Reprogramming to Pluripotency

    Restoring pluripotency using chemical compounds alone would be a major step forward in developing clinical-grade pluripotent stem cells, but this has not yet been reported in human cells. We previously demonstrated that VPA_ AFS cells, human amniocytes cultivated with valproic acid (VPA) acquired functional pluripotency while remaining distinct from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), questioning the relationship between the modulation of cell fate and molecular regulation of the pluripotency network. Here, we used single-cell analysis and functional assays to reveal that VPA treatment resulted in a homogeneous population of self-renewing non-transformed cells that fulfill the hallmarks of pluripotency, i.e., a short G1 phase, a dependence on glycolytic metabolism, expression of epigenetic modifications on histones 3 and 4, and reactivation of endogenous OCT4 and downstream targets at a lower level than that observed in hESCs. Mechanistic insights into the process of VPA-induced reprogramming revealed that it was dependent on OCT4 promoter activation, which was achieved independently of the PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase)/ AKT/ mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) pathway or GSK3 beta inhibition but was concomitant with the presence of acetylated histones H3K9 and H3K56, which promote pluripotency. Our data identify, for the first time, the pluripotent transcriptional and molecular signature and metabolic status of human chemically induced pluripotent stem cells

    Use of the Dexamethasone-Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone Test to Assess Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Function in Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Objectives. Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis function may be abnormal in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A pilot study in 7 patients suggested impaired glucocorticoid feedback in some patients after the dexamethasone-corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) test. This study aimed to investigate the dexamethasone-corticotrophin releasing factor test in a larger group of patients and relate the results to characteristics of the disease. Methods. Outpatients with active RA (≥3 swollen and tender joints and C-reactive protein > 10 mg/L) took dexamethasone (1.5 mg) at 23:00 hour in the evening. Next day, baseline saliva and plasma samples were collected, CRH was infused at 11:00 hour, and 4 serial blood and saliva samples were collected. Plasma samples were stored at −80°C and a radioimmunoassay performed for saliva and plasma cortisol. Results. All 20 participants showed normal dexamethasone suppression and mounted no response to the CRH challenge. In samples with measurable cortisol, there was a strong correlation between saliva and plasma values (r = 0.876, n = 26, P < .01). Conclusion. No abnormalities were found in the Dexamethasone-CRH test in RA patients in contrast to a previous pilot study. Salivary cortisol measurement may offer an alternative noninvasive technique to plasma cortisol in RA patients in future studies
