Fish Habitat Utilization Patterns and Evaluation of the Efficacy of Marine Protected Areas in Hawaii: Integration of NOAA Digital Benthic Habitat Mapping and Coral Reef Ecological Studies
Over the past four decades, the state of Hawaii has developed a system of eleven Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCDs) to conserve and replenish marine resources around the state. Initially established to provide opportunities for public interaction with the marine environment, these MLCDs vary in size, habitat quality, and management regimes, providing an excellent opportunity to test hypotheses concerning marine protected area (MPA) design and function using multiple discreet sampling units. NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment’s Biogeography Team developed digital benthic habitat maps for all MLCD and adjacent habitats. These maps were used to evaluate the efficacy of existing MLCDs for biodiversity conservation and fisheries replenishment, using a spatially explicit stratified random sampling design. Coupling the distribution of habitats and species habitat affinities using GIS technology elucidates species habitat utilization patterns at scales that are commensurate with ecosystem processes and is useful in defining essential fish habitat and biologically relevant boundaries for MPAs.
Analysis of benthic cover validated the a priori classification of habitat types and provided justification for using these habitat strata to conduct stratified random sampling and analyses of fish habitat utilization patterns. Results showed that the abundance and distribution of species and assemblages exhibited strong correlations with habitat types. Fish assemblages in the colonized and uncolonized hardbottom habitats were found to be most similar among all of the habitat types. Much of the macroalgae habitat sampled was macroalgae growing on hard substrate, and as a result showed similarities with the other hardbottom assemblages. The fish assemblages in the sand habitats were highly variable but distinct from the other habitat types.
Management regime also played an important role in the abundance and distribution of fish assemblages. MLCDs had higher values for most fish assemblage characteristics (e.g. biomass, size, diversity) compared with adjacent fished areas and Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs) across all habitat types. In addition, apex predators and other targeted resources species were more abundant and larger in the MLCDs, illustrating the effectiveness of these closures in conserving fish populations. Distribution and sighting frequency of reef fishes in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
This study analyzed species richness, distribution, and sighting frequency of selected reef fishes to describe species assemblage composition, abundance, and spatial distribution patterns among sites and regions (Upper Keys, Middle Keys, Lower Keys, and Dry Tortugas) within the
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) barrier reef ecosystem. Data were obtained from the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) Fish Survey Project, a volunteer
fish-monitoring program. A total of 4,324 visual fish surveys conducted at 112 sites throughout the FKNMS were used in these analyses. The data set contained sighting information on 341 fish species comprising 68 families. Species richness was generally highest in the Upper Keys sites (maximum was 220 species at Molasses Reef) and lowest in the Dry Tortugas sites. Encounter rates differed among regions, with the Dry Tortugas having the highest rate, potentially a result of differences in the evenness in fishes and the lower diversity of habitat types in the Dry
Tortugas region. Geographic coverage maps were developed for 29 frequently observed species. Fourteen of these species showed significant regional variation in mean sighting frequency (%SF). Six species had significantly lower mean %SF and eight species had significantly higher
mean %SF in the Dry Tortugas compared with other regions. Hierarchical clustering based on species composition (presence-absence) and species % SF revealed interesting patterns of similarities among sites that varied across spatial scales. Results presented here indicate that
phenomena affecting reef fish composition in the FKNMS operate at multiple spatial scales, including a biogeographic scale that defines the character of the region as a whole, a reef scale (~50-100 km) that include meso-scale physical oceanographic processes and regional variation in reef structure and associated reef habitats, and a local scale that includes level of protection,
cross-shelf location and a suite of physical characteristics of a given reef. It is likely that at both
regional and local scales, species habitat requirements strongly influence the patterns revealed in this study, and are particularly limiting for species that are less frequently observed in the Dry Tortugas. The results of this report serve as a benchmark for the current status of the reef fishes in the FKNMS. In addition, these data provide the basis for analyses on reserve effects and the

Motor control of the diaphragm in anesthetized rabbits
Diaphragmatic regions are recruited in a specialized manner either as part of a central motor program during non-respiratory maneuvers, e.g. vomiting, or because of reflex responses, e.g. esophageal distension. Some studies in cats and dogs suggest that crural and costal diaphragm may be differentially activated also in response to respiratory stimuli from chemoreceptors or lung and chest wall mechanoreceptors. To verify whether this could occur also in other species, the EMG activity from the sternal, costoventral, costodorsal, and crural diaphragm was recorded in 42 anesthetized rabbits in response to various respiratory maneuvers, such as chemical stimulation, mechanical loading, lung volume and postural changes before and after vagotomy, or a non-respiratory maneuver such as esophageal distension. Regional activity was evaluated from timing of the raw EMG signal, and amplitude and shape of the moving average EMG. In all animals esophageal distension caused greater inhibition of the crural than sternal and costal diaphragm, whereas under all the other conditions differential diaphragmatic activation never occurred. These results indicate that in response to respiratory stimuli the rabbit diaphragm behaves as a single unit under the command of the central respiratory control system
Caregivers' and relatives' grief in intensive care unit: a literature review on nursing practices
Abstract
Introduction
The sudden and unexpected nature, which often characterizes death in intensive care, complicates the processing of the loss by relatives and caregivers increasing the risk of complicated grief (CG). Due to the high social impact and long-term consequences on the quality of life of relatives and caregivers, intensive care nurses should ensure evidence-based grief support interventions. This review aims to identify nursing interventions for the management of the bereavement of relatives and caregivers and to assess their effectiveness, relatives' and caregivers' satisfaction and prevention of CG.
Methods
Research was performed in CINAHL, PubMed, Psycinfo and Scopus databases with no limits on study design and publication timespan. The population included relatives or caregivers of patients died in intensive care unit.
Results
14 studies met inclusion criteria. Two studies show that the communication of the bad news through dialogue between the team and relatives/caregivers can reduce, in the latter, the levels of anxiety and depression and the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder. The quality study by Kentish-Barnes et al. (2017) shows that subjects perceived support in receiving a letter of condolence, but the RCT of the same author concludes that those who received the letter were more exposed to the risk of CG. Four studies claim that follow-up meetings facilitate the process of adaptation to loss by providing relatives/caregivers the opportunity to clarify the circumstances of death. Finally, two studies report that the events of commemoration arouse positive emotions in family members.
Conclusions
The review process has identified only a small number of evidences on the effectiveness of nursing interventions, preventing the possibility of providing recommendations or guidelines. Further research is needed and it should consist of RCTs of high methodological quality.

Tailoring correlations of the local density of states in disordered photonic materials
We present experimental evidence for the different mechanisms driving the
fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) in disordered photonic
systems. We establish a clear link between the microscopic structure of the
material and the frequency correlation function of LDOS accessed by a
near-field hyperspectral imaging technique. We show, in particular, that short-
and long-range frequency correlations of LDOS are controlled by different
physical processes (multiple or single scattering processes, respectively) that
can be---to some extent---manipulated independently. We also demonstrate that
the single scattering contribution to LDOS fluctuations is sensitive to
subwavelength features of the material and, in particular, to the correlation
length of its dielectric function. Our work paves a way towards a complete
control of statistical properties of disordered photonic systems, allowing for

Isotope Spectroscopy
The measurement of isotopic ratios provides a privileged insight both into
nucleosynthesis and into the mechanisms operating in stellar envelopes, such as
gravitational settling. In this article, we give a few examples of how isotopic
ratios can be determined from high-resolution, high-quality stellar spectra. We
consider examples of the lightest elements, H and He, for which the isotopic
shifts are very large and easily measurable, and examples of heavier elements
for which the determination of isotopic ratios is more difficult. The presence
of 6Li in the stellar atmospheres causes a subtle extra depression in the red
wing of the 7Li 670.7 nm doublet which can only be detected in spectra of the
highest quality. But even with the best spectra, the derived Li abundance
can only be as good as the synthetic spectra used for their interpretation. It
is now known that 3D non-LTE modelling of the lithium spectral line profiles is
necessary to account properly for the intrinsic line asymmetry, which is
produced by convective flows in the atmospheres of cool stars, and can mimic
the presence of 6Li. We also discuss briefly the case of the carbon isotopic
ratio in metal-poor stars, and provide a new determination of the nickel

The Luminosity Function of high-redshift QSOs - A combined analysis of GOODS and SDSS
Aims: In this work the luminosity function of QSOs is measured in the
redshift range 3.5<z<5.2 for the absolute magnitude interval -21<M_{145}<-28.
The determination of the faint end of the luminosity function at these
redshifts provides important constraints on models of joint evolution of
galaxies and AGNs. Methods: We have defined suitable criteria to select faint
QSOs in the GOODS fields, checking in detail their effectiveness and
completeness. Spectroscopic follow-up of the resulting QSO candidates has been
carried out. The confirmed sample of faint QSOs is compared with a brighter one
derived from the SDSS. We have used a Monte-Carlo technique to estimate the
properties of the luminosity function, checking various parameterizations for
its shape and evolution. Results: Models based on Pure Density Evolution show
better agreement with observation than models based on Pure Luminosity
Evolution. However a different break magnitude with respect to z~2.1 is
required at 3.5<z<5.2. Models with a steeper faint end score a higher
probability. We do not find any evidence for a flattening of the bright end at
redshift z>3.5. Conclusions: The estimated space density evolution of QSOs
indicates a suppression of the formation and/or feeding of Supermassive Black
Holes at these redshifts. The QSO contribution to the UV background is

Current concepts in nanostructured contrast media development for In vivo photoacoustic imaging
Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is indeed one of the most promising bioimaging techniques for theranostics applications in humans, allowing for the visualization of blood vessels and melanomas with high spatial resolution. However, in order to overcome the endogenous contrast arising from interfering endogenous species such as haemoglobin and melanin, specific contrast agents need to be developed, allowing PAI to successfully identify targeted contrast in the range of wavelengths in which interference from the biomatrix is minimized. This has been first performed by small molecule dyes, which, however, suffer from some important limitations such as low hydrophilicity and short circulation times. For this reason, scientific research has recently directed its efforts towards the development of nanostructured contrast agents capable of providing efficient PA contrast at low concentrations with low toxicity and high biocompatibility. The principal nanostructures are based on (1) metal and semiconducting nanoparticles, amongst which variously shaped nano-gold plays the main role, (2) carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, and (3) conjugated polymer nanoparticles. In this review, the principal characteristics of this class of materials are reported and greater focus is directed towards in vivo studies. A detailed analysis is performed on various physical-chemical parameters that define the PA response of reported contrast agents, like absorption coefficients and photoacoustic efficiencies.
