    Diastrophic Ordovician episodes registered in the early Tremadocian volcanic sedimentary successions along the northern Famatina System, NW Argentina

    En este trabajo se estudia la sección ubicada en el tramo de Las Angosturas (27°42´10,2´´ - 27°42´10,4´´ S y 67°57´20,5´´- 67°56´54,8´´ O), sierra de Narváez, norte del Sistema de Famatina. En esta zona aflora una sucesión volcánica - sedimentaria asignable al Tremadociano temprano, la que reúne niveles de lavas ácidas y básicas, intercaladas con areniscas y pelitas macizas y laminadas, con graptolitos. En esta sucesión se han reconocido, además de un bandeado primario S0 y de un clivaje por soterramiento S1, dos episodios deformacionales que generan los plegamientos superpuestos P1 y P2. La estructura compleja, con indicadores de deformación polifásica de estos depósitos, contrasta con la estructura simple de la sucesión volcánica - sedimentaria arenigiana que aflora en la misma región. El análisis de estas estructuras permite sostener la existencia de más de un episodio tecto - magmático durante el Ordovícico inferior en el Sistema de Famatina.This study is focused on the analysis of the Las Angosturas section (27°42´10.2´´ - 27°42´10.4´´ S and 67°57´20.5´´ - 67°56´54.8´´ W), sierra de Narváez, northern Famatina System, where a volcanic - sedimentary sequence of early Tremadocian age crops out. Basic and felsic lavas, intercalated with massive and laminated sandstones and siltstones, locally hosting graptolitic levels. In the sedimentary rocks were recognized S0 primary layering and other S1 discontinuous cleavage, but the better developed structures are the superimposed folds P1 and P2. This complex structure, including polyphasic deformation of beds, contrasts with the simple structure of the Arenigian successions. The detailed study of these structures suggests the presence of more than one tecto - magmatic event during the Lower Ordovician in the Famatina System.Fil: Cisterna, Clara Eugenia.     Sinestral Rotation and NNW Shortening of the Ambato Block induced by Cenozoic NE to E-W Transpression, Argentina

    South of 27° S, where the Nazca plate sinks with low angle below the South American plate, the mountain ranges that constitute the Sierras Pampeanas where uplifted by reverse faults, tilted to the east, during the Pliocene. The analysis and interpretation of satellite images and the systematic recording of fracture planes in outcrops of metamorphic basement rocks and Neogene sediments allow us to determine tectonic events that gave the region of the Ambato Block a NE shortening, a sinestral rotation and NNW shortening. As a result of these tectonic events, during the convergence of the Nazca and South American plates, reverse faults, gravitational faults and transcurrent faults were generated, and the division of the Ambato Block into smaller ranges and the development of intramontane basins ocurred. The Las Cañas normal fault, with E-W strike, was generated before the Andean tectonics, using the schistosity planes of the metamorphic basement; it constitutes a step in which the outcrops of the Santa Bárbara Subgroup of the Salta Group end.Fil: Gutierrez, Adolfo Antonio.     Piedmont deposits as seismic energy dissipators, Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina

    This study shows the neotectonic deformation occurred in the southern piedmont of the Cumbres Calchaquíes, in the Amaicha and Tafí valleys. Neotectonic deformation manifests itself through faults, folds and diversions of drainage channels. The Amaicha valley is bounded to the north by the Tafí del Valle fault and to the south by the Los Cardones fault. The Cumbres Calchaquíes ride over the Sierra de Aconquija through the Los Cardones and Carapunco faults. The Carapunco fault also has a synestral component, responsible for generating an imbricated system of contractional fractures. In the study region many earthquakes of ≥ 3 and ≥ 4 magnitude coincide with regional faults evidencing its neotectonic activity. The seismic energy dissipated through materials with less cohesion that form the fill of the valleys, generating discrete fault scarps and strongly folded conglomerate strata. The foothills deposits of the Cumbres Calchaquíes absorbed most of the seismic energy released during the reactivation of the faults.     Cenozoic Age Counterclockwise Rotation in the Northwest End of the Sierras Pampeanas, Argentina

    Investigations into the Andean orocline revealed a counterclockwise rotation of about 37° in the north and a clockwise rotation of about 29° in the south. This rotation would have started in the Eocene because the Nazca and South American plates converged. The transition zone between the Puna and the Sierras Pampeanas has a clockwise rotation pattern. Our new data show that the NE convergence of the Nazca and South American plates caused the counterclockwise rotation around the NW end of the Sierras Pampeanas. The temperature rise during a magmatic activity at 13 Ma would have favored a counterclockwise rotation of the mountain blocks of about 20° on a detachment zone within 10 to 15 km of depth. These range rotations generated local stress tensors trending NE and NW, facilitating the development of valleys, basins, mineralized dikes, mineral deposits, and alluvial fans separated from their origin. The Atajo fault shows both ductile and brittle characteristics. A mylonitic belt from the Sierra de Aconquija was juxtaposed on the rocks of the Ovejería Block and the Farallón Negro Volcanic Complex by reverse vertical displacement, and a dextral horizontal component of displacement resulted in curvatures that gave rise to pull-apart basins and step over features. The Santa Maria Valley, Campo del Arenal, Hualfín Valley, and Pipanaco salt flat most likely constituted a vast early Miocene basin rarely interrupted by low feature relief.Fil: Gutierrez, Adolfo Antonio.     Palifermin for oral mucositis after intensive therapy for hematologic cancers

    BACKGROUND: Oral mucositis is a complication of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy with no effective treatment. We tested the ability of palifermin (recombinant human keratinocyte growth factor) to decrease oral mucosal injury induced by cytotoxic therapy. METHODS: This double-blind study compared the effect of palifermin with that of a placebo on the development of oral mucositis in 212 patients with hematologic cancers; 106 patients received palifermin (60 microg per kilogram of body weight per day) and 106 received a placebo intravenously for three consecutive days immediately before the initiation of conditioning therapy (fractionated total-body irradiation plus high-dose chemotherapy) and after autologous hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. Oral mucositis was evaluated daily for 28 days after transplantation. RESULTS: The incidence of oral mucositis of World Health Organization (WHO) grade 3 or 4 was 63 percent in the palifermin group and 98 percent in the placebo group (P\u3c0.001). Among patients with this degree of mucositis, the median duration of mucositis was 6 days (range, 1 to 22) in the palifermin group and 9 days (range, 1 to 27) in the placebo group. Among all patients, regardless of the occurrence of mucositis, the median duration of oral mucositis of WHO grade 3 or 4 was 3 days (range, 0 to 22) in the palifermin group and 9 days (range, 0 to 27) in the placebo group (P\u3c0.001). As compared with placebo, palifermin was associated with significant reductions in the incidence of grade 4 oral mucositis (20 percent vs. 62 percent, P\u3c0.001), patient-reported soreness of the mouth and throat (area-under-the-curve score, 29.0 [range, 0 to 98] vs. 46.8 [range, 0 to 110]; P\u3c0.001), the use of opioid analgesics (median, 212 mg of morphine equivalents [range, 0 to 9418] vs. 535 mg of morphine equivalents [range, 0 to 9418], P\u3c0.001), and the incidence of use of total parenteral nutrition (31 percent vs. 55 percent, P\u3c0.001). Adverse events, mainly rash, pruritus, erythema, mouth and tongue disorders, and taste alteration, were mild to moderate in severity and were transient. CONCLUSIONS: Palifermin reduced the duration and severity of oral mucositis after intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy for hematologic cancers

    La clase práctica interactiva como herramienta para optimizar la coordinación de los grupos en asignaturas prácticas del ámbito universitario

    Los elementos digitales virtuales nos permiten economizar el tiempo y puede facilitar la comunicación y coordinación del alumnado con su docente, tanto en condiciones de pandemia como en condiciones de normalidad. Para este fin se generó una herramienta novedosa basada en una hoja de cálculo, con actualización instantánea en red, para el registro de las anotaciones del alumno en las prácticas de la asignatura de Optometría II de la Facultad de Óptica y Optometría de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. El objetivo principal fue incrementar la eficiencia de las clases prácticas a través de la aplicación de recursos educativos innovadores en abierto implementando metodologías de enseñanza virtual para reducir el contacto directo entre los participantes en las clases presenciales. Esta metodología de trabajo permitió ahorrar un 50% del tiempo para llevar a cabo las actividades prácticas de los alumnos

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
