    Processing and characterization of dual phase steel foam

    Porous materials featuring cellular structures are known to have many interesting combinations of physical and mechanical properties. Some of them have been extensively used in the transportation field (i.e. balsa wood). Steel foams presented promising theoretical properties for both functional and structural applications in transportation, but processing of such a kind of foams is complex due to their high melting point. Recently a technique for processing Cu-based alloys open-cell foams through the molten metal infiltration of a leachable bed of amorphous SiO2 particles was proposed. A variation of the proposed technique that uses SiC particles as space holder is now presented and was recently successfully applied for dual phase steel foam processing. Results from a processing of dual phase DP500 steel foams, including some morphological, micro-structural and mechanical characterization, are here presented

    A Simplified Approach Based on Cellular Automata for Describing Direct Reduced Iron Production in Different Reducing Conditions

    A quick computation approach based on cellular automata is developed and implemented to describe the reduction of iron ore pellets by a mixture of reducing agents featured by different H2/CO ratios. The evolution of oxygen concentration inside the pellet is followed from the beginning to the end of contact between reducing agent and pellet. The variation of thermal state of pellets and gas mixture is computed based on their initial temperature, considering the heat involved and the convective heat exchange between pellet and gas mixture. The use of cellular automata and finite-difference method to solve the diffusion equation point out the absence of any diffusion coefficient value, allowing to make the model fit the experimental trial, because the problem is that it is not ruled just by diffusion but also by the concentration variation of reducing agent inside the pellet due to porosity increasing during reduction. The updating of the reducing agents concentration implies a sharp decrease of oxygen concentration that the cellular automata model considers. The developed model is able to provide the in-line control of reduction process and could be used to adjust the chemical concentration and temperature of injected reducing agents

    Impact of the microbial derived short chain fatty acid propionate on host susceptibility to bacterial and fungal infections in vivo.

    Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by intestinal microbes mediate anti-inflammatory effects, but whether they impact on antimicrobial host defenses remains largely unknown. This is of particular concern in light of the attractiveness of developing SCFA-mediated therapies and considering that SCFAs work as inhibitors of histone deacetylases which are known to interfere with host defenses. Here we show that propionate, one of the main SCFAs, dampens the response of innate immune cells to microbial stimulation, inhibiting cytokine and NO production by mouse or human monocytes/macrophages, splenocytes, whole blood and, less efficiently, dendritic cells. In proof of concept studies, propionate neither improved nor worsened morbidity and mortality parameters in models of endotoxemia and infections induced by gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae), gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Candida albicans. Moreover, propionate did not impair the efficacy of passive immunization and natural immunization. Therefore, propionate has no significant impact on host susceptibility to infections and the establishment of protective anti-bacterial responses. These data support the safety of propionate-based therapies, either via direct supplementation or via the diet/microbiota, to treat non-infectious inflammation-related disorders, without increasing the risk of infection

    Microstructural investigation on an Al 6061 T6 alloy subjected to ballistic impact C

    Ballistic impact generates significant modifications in the microstructural patterns. High strain rate and local high temperature conditions work together in opposite way: the first causes strain hardening, while the second factor produces softening. Moreover, after the impact, the cooling process is responsible of other local modifications on the arrangement of dislocations and precipitates. Therefore an experimental analysis on Al 6061 T6 cut from the edge of a component subjected to ballistic impact has been carried on in order to investigate on the microstructural modifications. Considerations about the influence on the mechanical behavior and on the fracture propagation are reported. The crystallographic textures and the misorientation featuring the grains play in fact a significant role in the fracture mechanism. The comparison between the texture situation before and after the impact can allow to evaluate the localized straining of the material and to point out its dissipation efficiency as a function of the distance from the damaged surfaces © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Neuropsychological changes in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies

    The aim of this meta-analysis is twofold: (a) to assess cognitive impairments in isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC); (b) to quantitatively estimate the risk of developing a neurodegenerative disease in iRBD patients according to baseline cognitive assessment. To address the first aim, cross-sectional studies including polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients, HC, and reporting neuropsychological testing were included. To address the second aim, longitudinal studies including polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients, reporting baseline neuropsychological testing for converted and still isolated patients separately were included. The literature search was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines and the protocol was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42021253427). Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases. Publication bias and statistical heterogeneity were assessed respectively by funnel plot asymmetry and using I2. Finally, a random-effect model was performed to pool the included studies. 75 cross-sectional (2,398 HC and 2,460 iRBD patients) and 11 longitudinal (495 iRBD patients) studies were selected. Cross-sectional studies showed that iRBD patients performed significantly worse in cognitive screening scores (random-effects (RE) model = –0.69), memory (RE model = –0.64), and executive function (RE model = –0.50) domains compared to HC. The survival analyses conducted for longitudinal studies revealed that lower executive function and language performance, as well as the presence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), at baseline were associated with an increased risk of conversion at follow-up. Our study underlines the importance of a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment in the context of iRBD

    Thermodynamics of a mixed quantum-classical Heisenberg model in two dimensions

    We study the planar antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a decorated hexagonal lattice, involving both classical spins (occupying the vertices) and quantum spins (occupying the middle of the links). This study is motivated by the description of a recently synthesized molecular magnetic compound. First, we trace out the spin 1/2 degrees of freedom to obtain a fully classical model with an effective ferromagnetic interaction. Then, using high temperature expansions and Monte Carlo simulations, we analyse its thermal and magnetic properties.     We classify Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over groups such that the underlying rack is braided and the homogeneous component of degree three of the Nichols algebra satisfies a given inequality. This assumption turns out to be equivalent to a factorization assumption on the Hilbert series. Besides the known Nichols algebras we obtain a new example. Our method is based on a combinatorial invariant of the Hurwitz orbits with respect to the action of the braid group on three strands.Comment: v2: 35 pages, 6 tables, 14 figure
