Effects of vortex organization on heat transfer enhancement by Gortler instability
Gortler vortices, which appear due to streamline curvature in a boundary layer, drastically modify the momentum and heat-transfer properties of the boundary layer. Gortler instability and, as such, heat transfer enhancement by Gortler instability are dependent on initial conditions. In particular, the upstream perturbation wavelength affects downstream nonlinear enhancement of the heat-transfer rate. In this paper we investigate this effect and show that the shorter wavelengths of the upstream perturbations increase the heat-transfer rate of nonlinear Gortler vortices. (C) 2004 Elsevier SAS. Some unexpected effects of wavelength and perturbation strength on heat transfer enhancement by Gortler instability
Convective heat transfer is studied in a laminar boundary layer over a concave wall in the presence of Gortler vortices with constant wall heat flux conditions. Comparison of local Nusselt and Stanton numbers demonstrates that the latter is more accurate in revealing three-dimensional flow development. Analysis of heat transfer with different freestream velocities shows that the Reynolds similarity is not valid in the presence of Gortler centrifugal instability and indicates that the Gortler number based on the Blasius momentum thickness enables one to follow the different steps of Gortler instability development. Analysis of the effects of the Gortler vortex wavelength and of perturbation wire diameter shows that the smaller the vortex wavelength, the faster the apparent transition to turbulence. Moreover, larger wire diameters also cause a faster boundary-layer transition. It has been shown experimentally that in the range of heat loading studied here, the buoyancy force has no effect on Gortler vortex generation and growth. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
On

Eddy Heat Transfer by Secondary Goumlrtler Instability
Experimental measurements of flow and heat transfer in a concave surface boundary layer in the presence of streamwise counter-rotating Goumlrtler vortices show conclusively that local surface heat-transfer rates can exceed that of the turbulent flat-plate boundary layer even in the absence of turbulence. We have observed unexpected heat-transfer behavior in a laminar boundary layer on a concave wall even at low nominal velocity, a configuration not studied in the literature: The heat-transfer enhancement is extremely high, well above that corresponding to a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. To quantify the effect of freestream velocity on heat-transfer intensification, two criteria are defined for the growth of the Goumlrtler instability: P(z) for primary instability and P(rms) for the secondary instability. The evolution of these criteria along the concave surface boundary layer clearly shows that the secondary instability grows faster than the primary instability. Measurements show that beyond a certain distance the heat-transfer enhancement is basically correlated with P(rms), so that the high heat-transfer intensification at low freestream velocities is due to the high growth rate of the secondary instability. The relative heat-transfer enhancement seems to be independent of the nominal velocity (global Reynolds number) and allows predicting the influence of the Goumlrtler instabilities in a large variety of situations

Development of turbulent wakes evolving from asymmetric shear layers
This paper reports an experimental investi-
gation on the response of a turbulent wake past
an elongated flat plate to various upstream flow
conditions. Different tripping wires were placed
on the upper side of the plate downstream the
leading edge resulting in asymmetric shear lay-
ers evolving from the trailing edges. Mean flow
and turbulent fields of the asymmetric wakes
were compared to their symmetrical counter-
part. The symmetrical wake was found to attain
a self-similar state whereas asymmetric wakes
continued to slowly evolve towards an expected
asymptotic behaviour at a rate that strongly de-
pends on the imposed initial conditions.Papers presented to the 12th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Costa de Sol, Spain on 11-13 July 2016
