Melting behavior of large disordered sodium clusters
The melting-like transition in disordered sodium clusters Na_N, with N=92 and
142 is studied by using a first-principles constant-energy molecular dynamics
simulation method. Na_142, whose atoms are distributed in two (surface and
inner) main shells with different radial distances to the center of mass of the
cluster, melts in two steps: the first one, at approx. 130 K, is characterized
by a high intrashell mobility of the atoms, and the second, homogeneous
melting, at approx. 270 K, involves diffusive motion of all the atoms across
the whole cluster volume (both intrashell and intershell displacements are
allowed). On the contrary, the melting of Na_92 proceeds gradually over a very
wide temperature interval, without any abrupt step visible in the thermal or
structural melting indicators. The occurrence of well defined steps in the
melting transition is then shown to be related to the existence of a
distribution of the atoms in shells. Thereby we propose a necessary condition
for a cluster to be considered rigorously amorphouslike (totally disordered),
namely that there are no space regions of the cluster where the local value of
the atomic density is considerably reduced. Na_92 is the only cluster from the
two considered that verifies this condition, so its thermal behavior can be
considered as representative of that expected for amorphous clusters. Na_142,
on the other hand, has a discernible atomic shell structure and should be
considered instead as just partially disordered. The thermal behavior of these
two clusters is also compared to that of icosahedral (totally ordered) sodium
clusters of the same sizes.Comment: LaTeX file. 7 pages with 12 picture

A new self-organizing neural gas model based on Bregman divergences
In this paper, a new self-organizing neural gas model that we call Growing Hierarchical Bregman Neural
Gas (GHBNG) has been proposed. Our proposal is based on the Growing Hierarchical Neural Gas (GHNG) in which Bregman divergences are incorporated in order to compute the winning neuron. This model has been applied to anomaly detection in video sequences together with a Faster R-CNN as an object detector module. Experimental results not only confirm the effectiveness of the GHBNG for the detection of anomalous object in video sequences but also its selforganization
capabilities.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tec
The environmental watchdogs: Wildlife as sentinels of antimicrobial resistance pollution in the environment in Catalonia
The alarming emergence of this resistance in human and veterinary medicine has activated awareness for monitoring the levels of AMR pollution in the environment. In this report, the emergence of genes conferring resistance to human last-resort antibiotics is described in a wide diversity of wild animals. It suggests that wildlife can be good sentinels of AMR environmental pollution, especially in highly populated areas. Moreover, wild animals can also contribute in the dissemination of AMR bacteria and genes in the environment and represent a zoonotic risk for the population who are exposed to them
Vehicle Type Detection by Convolutional Neural Networks
In this work a new vehicle type detection procedure for traffic surveillance videos is proposed. A Convolutional Neural Network is
integrated into a vehicle tracking system in order to accomplish this task.
Solutions for vehicle overlapping, differing vehicle sizes and poor spatial resolution are presented. The system is tested on well known benchmarks, and multiclass recognition performance results are reported. Our proposal is shown to attain good results over a wide range of difficult
situations.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Road pollution estimation using static cameras and neural networks
Effect of preparation conditions on the polymorphism and transport properties of lanthanum molybdates
In this work, La6MoO12-based compounds were investigated as part of a new family of materials very competitive as hydrogen separation membranes [1,2].
La5.4MoO11.1 was synthesized by the freeze-drying precursor method and the calcination conditions were optimized in order to obtain single phases. Several cooling rates were applied and different polymorphs were obtained: a simple cubic fluorite symmetry (Fm-3m) for the sample cooled by quenching, and two different rhombohedral (R-3) space groups for the samples cooled at 50 ºC•min-1 and 0.5 ºC•min-1 (see Figure below). For the quenched sample, the Rietveld refinement was satisfactory in a Fm-3m space group. For the other two compositions no structural model was available and were indexed in a R-3 space group, however some small reflections were not given any intensity by the model used. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of superstructures for those samples. All ceramic materials were obtained with relative densities close to 100% after sintering at 1500 ºC. Stability studies demonstrated that all three polymorphs were stable in oxidizing and reducing conditions at 800 ºC for 48 hours.
The three samples present a significant proton contribution to the conductivity at temperatures lower than 800 ºC. These results were confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. The highest conductivity values were observed for the samples prepared by quenching. The three polymorphs display a small p-type electronic contribution to the overall conductivity in oxidizing conditions and n-type electronic one in very reducing conditions, much more significant for the samples cooled by quenching and at 50 ºC•min-1.Universidad de Málaga.
