    Spiral structure in the outer galactic disk, I: the third galactic quadrant

    We combine optical and radio observations to trace the spiral structure in the third quadrant of the Milky Way. The optical observations consist of a large sample of young open clusters and associations, whereas the radio observations consist of a survey of nearby and distant clouds observed in CO. Both the optical and radio samples are the largest ones thus far presented in the literature. We use this unique material to analyze the behavior of interstellar extinction and to trace the detailed structure of the third Galactic quadrant (TGQ).We find that the outer (Cygnus) grand design spiral arm is traced by stellar and CO components, while the Perseus arm is traced solely by CO and is possibly being disrupted by the crossing of the Local (Orion) arm. The Local arm is traced by CO and young stars toward l ¼ 240 and extends for over 8 kpc along the line of sight reaching the outer arm.     The intermediate-age open clusters Ruprecht 4, Ruprecht 7 and Pismis 15

    We report on BVIBVI CCD photometry to V=22.0V=22.0 for 3 fields centered on the region of the Galactic star clusters Ruprecht~4, Ruprecht~7 and Pismis~15 and on 3 displaced control fields. Ruprecht~4 and Pismis~15 have never been studied before, and we provide for the first time estimates of their fundamental parameters, namely, radial extent, age, distance and reddening. Ruprecht~7 (Berkeley~33) however was studied by Mazur et al. (1993). We find that the three clusters are all of intermediate age (0.8-1.3 Gyr), and with a metallicity close to or lower than solar.Comment: 8 pages, 12 eps figures, in press in MNRA

    Perda de solo e água por erosão hídrica em argissolo sob diferentes densidades de cobertura vegetal.

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, em campo, as perdas de solo e água por erosão hídrica em entressulcos de um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo, utilizando chuva simulada e diferentes densidades de cobertura vegetal. O estudo foi conduzido na estação experimental Empresa Matogrossense de Pesquisa, Assistência e Extensão Rural S/A-EMPAER. Os tratamentos avaliados apresentavam cobertura vegetal com densidades de 0, 2 e 4 t ha-1. As perdas foram quantificadas durante 90 minutos de chuva, com intensidade de 100 mm h-1. O tratamento sem cobertura vegetal apresentou maiores taxas de desagregação do solo quando comparado aos tratamentos com 2 e 4 t ha-1. A utilização de cobertura vegetal reduziu a taxa de desagregação do solo, no entanto não influenciou nas perdas de água e na taxa de infiltração da água no solo

    Stellar population of the Rosette Nebula and NGC 2244: application of the probabilistic random forest

    (Abridged) In this work, we study the 2.8x2.6 deg2 region in the emblematic Rosette Nebula, centred at the young cluster NGC 2244, with the aim of constructing the most reliable candidate member list to date, determining various structural and kinematic parameters, and learning about the past and the future of the region. Starting from a catalogue containing optical to mid-infrared photometry, as well as positions and proper motions from Gaia EDR3, we apply the Probabilistic Random Forest algorithm and derive membership probability for each source. Based on the list of almost 3000 probable members, of which about a third are concentrated within the radius of 20' from the centre of NGC 2244, we identify various clustered sources and stellar concentrations, and estimate the average distance of 1489+-37 pc (entire region), 1440+-32 pc (NGC 2244) and 1525+-36 pc (NGC 2237). The masses, extinction, and ages are derived by SED fitting, and the internal dynamic is assessed via proper motions relative to the mean proper motion of NGC 2244. NGC 2244 is showing a clear expansion pattern, with an expansion velocity that increases with radius. Its IMF is well represented by two power laws (dN/dM\propto M^{-\alpha}), with slopes \alpha = 1.05+-0.02 for the mass range 0.2 - 1.5 MSun, and \alpha = 2.3+-0.3 for the mass range 1.5 - 20 MSun, in agreement with other star forming regions. The mean age of the region is ~2 Myr. We find evidence for the difference in ages between NGC 2244 and the region associated with the molecular cloud, which appears slightly younger. The velocity dispersion of NGC 2244 is well above the virial velocity dispersion derived from the total mass (1000+-70 MSun) and half-mass radius (3.4+-0.2 pc). From the comparison to other clusters and to numerical simulations, we conclude that NGC 2244 may be unbound, and possibly even formed in a super-virial state.Comment: 30 pages, 28 figures.     3D shape of Orion A from Gaia DR2

    Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics. © 2018 ESO.We use the Gaia DR2 distances of about 700 mid-infrared selected young stellar objects in the benchmark giant molecular cloud Orion A to infer its 3D shape and orientation. We find that Orion A is not the fairly straight filamentary cloud that we see in (2D) projection, but instead a cometary-like cloud oriented toward the Galactic plane, with two distinct components: a denser and enhanced star-forming (bent) Head, and a lower density and star-formation quieter ~75 pc long Tail. The true extent of Orion A is not the projected ~40 pc but ~90 pc, making it by far the largest molecular cloud in the local neighborhood. Its aspect ratio (~30:1) and high column-density fraction (~45%) make it similar to large-scale Milky Way filaments ("bones"), despite its distance to the galactic mid-plane being an order of magnitude larger than typically found for these structures.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Host traits, lifestyle and environment are associated with the human skin bacteria

    BackgroundThe human skin offers diverse ecosystems for microbial symbionts. However, the factors shaping skin-microbiome interactions are still insufficiently characterized. This contrasts to the broader knowledge about the factors influencing the gut microbiota.ObjectivesWe aimed to investigate major patterns of associations of host traits, lifestyle, and environmental factors with skin bacteria in two German populations.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study with 647 participants from two population-based German cohorts, PopGen (n=294) and KORA FF4 (n=353), totaling 1794 skin samples. The V1-V2 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced. Associations were tested with two bacterial levels, community (beta-diversity) and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence variants (ASVs).ResultsWe validated known associations of the skin microbiota with skin microenvironment, age, body mass index (BMI) and sex. These factors were associated with beta diversity and abundance of ASVs in PopGen, which was largely replicated in KORA FF4. Most intriguingly, dietary macronutrients and total dietary energy were associated with several ASVs. ASVs were also associated with smoking, alcohol consumption, skin pH, skin type, transepidermal water loss, education, and several environmental exposures, including hours spent outdoors. Associated ASVs included members of the genera Propionibacterium, Corynebacterium, and Staphylococcus.DiscussionWe expand the current understanding of factors associated with the skin bacterial community. We show the association of diet with the skin bacteria. Finally, we hypothesize that the skin microenvironment and the host physiology would shape the skin bacterial community at greater extent in comparison to a single skin physiological feature, lifestyle and environmental exposition

    Short-term physical exercise impacts on the human holobiont obtained by a randomised intervention study

    Background Human well-being has been linked to the composition and functional capacity of the intestinal microbiota. As regular exercise is known to improve human health, it is not surprising that exercise was previously described to positively modulate the gut microbiota, too. However, most previous studies mainly focused on either elite athletes or animal models. Thus, we conducted a randomised intervention study that focused on the effects of different types of training (endurance and strength) in previously physically inactive, healthy adults in comparison to controls that did not perform regular exercise. Overall study duration was ten weeks including six weeks of intervention period. In addition to 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of longitudinally sampled faecal material of participants (six time points), detailed body composition measurements and analysis of blood samples (at baseline and after the intervention) were performed to obtain overall physiological changes within the intervention period. Activity tracker devices (wrist-band wearables) provided activity status and sleeping patterns of participants as well as exercise intensity and heart measurements. Conclusions We could show that different types of exercise have distinct but moderate effects on the overall physiology of humans and very distinct microbial changes in the gut. The observed overall changes during the intervention highlight the importance of physical activity on well-being. Future studies should investigate the effect of exercise on a longer timescale, investigate different training intensities and consider high-resolution shotgun metagenomics technology.
