Seismic vulnerability assessment: Methodological elements and applications to the case of Romania
This paper is intended to present some studies undertaken in order to develop a seismic vulnerability estimation system to fit the needs of development of earthquake scenarios and of development of an integrated disaster risk management system for Romania. Methodological aspects are dealt with, in connection with the criteria of categorization of buildings, with the definition of parameters used for characterizing vulnerability, with the setting up of an inventory of buildings and with the calibration of parameters characterizing vulnerability. Action was initiated along the coordinates referred to in connection with the methodological aspects mentioned above. The approach was made, as far as possible, specific to the conditions of Romania. Identification of female specific protein in seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch)
Electrophoretic serum protein profile of female Lates calcarifer reveals appearance
of female specific protein during gonadotropic dependent stages of ovarian growth.
The protein is conspicuously absent in the serum of maturing males. The protein
stains positively for carbohydrate, lipids and calcium indicating it to be vitellogenin.
The vitellogenin band first appears in fish with maturing ovaries (stage 3) and
stain intense and sharp till stage 4. At stage 5 (ripe) the band appears diffused.
The protein is lacking in the serum profile of immature (stage 1), resting preparatory
(stage 2) and spent (stage 6) as well as in maturing male fish. The
correlative pattern of vitellogenin band with ovarian maturation stages provides
evidence of single spawning in L. calcarifer
A molecular approach to reveal the genetic identity of parrot mussel and other sympatric mussel species distributed along the Kerala coast
Two commercially important mussel species are recorded from the Indian coast: green mussel Perna
viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) and brown mussel P. indica (Kuriakose and Nair, 1976). Apart from this, a
third type referred to as parrot mussel, which has shell shape of brown mussel, but with green shell
colouration and suspected to be the hybrid of the above two species has also been reported from Kollam
coast of Kerala, where both the species co-occur. In the present work, genetic identity of parrot and
sympatric mussel species was determined using protein and genomic DNA markers. Protein markers
viz. Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and allozymes and
the genomic DNA marker Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) were used for determining
genetic identity of the three mussel groups. The green and brown mussels could be clearly differentiated
using SDS PAGE. The parrot mussel protein pattern was similar to that of brown mussel, except for
an additional band of molecular weight 48.7 Kda which is unique to brown mussel. Genus specific
protein bands for Perna viz. 66 Kda, 43 Kda and 14.3 Kda, were detected in this study. Allozyme
electrophoresis also followed a similar pattern. Of the 10 allozyme loci studied, seven revealed speciesspecific
diagnostic differences between P.viridis and P.indica. They were AAT-1* (Aspartate Amino
Transferase-1*), AAT-2*, ME (Malic Enzyme)*, PGM-2*(Phospo Gluco Mutase-2*), EST-1* (Esterase-
1*), EST-2*, IcDH* (Isocitrate Dehydrogenase)*. Parrot mussel shared all the alleles of brown mussel,
and no hybrid pattern was observed. Species-specific alleles clearly differentiated green mussel from
both brown and parrot mussel. The genetic distance of green mussel from brown mussel, estimated
from allozyme data was 1.1145 and with parrot mussel it was 1.105. The genetic distance between
parrot mussel and brown mussel was negligibly low (0.0005). Using allozyme and RAPD data, the
Nei’s Unbiased Measures of genetic distance were calculated and the dendograms prepared based on
these values clearly depicted the separation of parrot mussel from green mussel as well as the close
resemblance of parrot mussel with brown mussel. The higher gene flow (1.1539) determined using
RAPD marker also hints that brown and parrot mussel may be acting as single interbreeding population.
Hence this study using molecular tools to test the genetic identity of parrot mussel has helped to
conclude that parrot mussel is only a morphotype of brown mussel and not a true hybrid of the two
Paniya Voices: A Participatory Poverty and Health Assessment among a marginalized South Indian tribal population
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In India, indigenous populations, known as <it>Adivasi </it>or Scheduled Tribes (STs), are among the poorest and most marginalized groups. 'Deprived' ST groups tend to display high levels of resignation and to lack the capacity to aspire; consequently their health perceptions often do not adequately correspond to their real health needs. Moreover, similar to indigenous populations elsewhere, STs often have little opportunity to voice perspectives framed within their own cultural worldviews. We undertook a study to gather policy-relevant data on the views, experiences, and priorities of a marginalized and previously enslaved tribal group in South India, the Paniyas, who have little 'voice' or power over their own situation.</p> <p>Methods/design</p> <p>We implemented a Participatory Poverty and Health Assessment (PPHA). We adopted guiding principles and an ethical code that promote respect for Paniya culture and values. The PPHA, informed by a vulnerability framework, addressed five key themes (health and illness, well-being, institutions, education, gender) using participatory approaches and qualitative methods. We implemented the PPHA in five Paniya colonies (clusters of houses in a small geographical area) in a <it>gram panchayat </it>(lowest level decentralized territorial unit) to generate data that can be quickly disseminated to decision-makers through interactive workshops and public forums.</p> <p>Preliminary findings</p> <p>Findings indicated that the Paniyas are caught in multiple 'vulnerability traps', that is, they view their situation as vicious cycles from which it is difficult to break free.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The PPHA is a potentially useful approach for global health researchers working with marginalized communities to implement research initiatives that will address those communities' health needs in an ethical and culturally appropriate manner.</p
Factors influencing dietary behaviours in urban food environments in Africa: a systematic mapping review
Objective:
To identify factors influencing dietary behaviours in urban food environments in Africa and identify areas for future research.
Design:
We systematically reviewed published/grey literature (protocol CRD4201706893). Findings were compiled into a map using a socio-ecological model on four environmental levels: individual, social, physical and macro.
Setting:
Urban food environments in Africa.
Participants:
Studies involving adolescents and adults (11–70 years, male/female).
Results:
Thirty-nine studies were included (six adolescent, fifteen adolescent/adult combined and eighteen adult). Quantitative methods were most common (twenty-eight quantitative, nine qualitative and two mixed methods). Studies were from fifteen African countries. Seventy-seven factors influencing dietary behaviours were identified, with two-thirds at the individual level (45/77). Factors in the social (11/77), physical (12/77) and macro (9/77) environments were investigated less. Individual-level factors that specifically emerged for adolescents included self-esteem, body satisfaction, dieting, spoken language, school attendance, gender, body composition, pubertal development, BMI and fat mass. Studies involving adolescents investigated social environment-level factors more, for example, sharing food with friends. The physical food environment was more commonly explored in adults, for example, convenience/availability of food. Macro-level factors associated with dietary behaviours were food/drink advertising, religion and food prices. Factors associated with dietary behaviour were broadly similar for men and women.
Conclusions:
The dominance of studies exploring individual-level factors suggests a need for research to explore how social, physical and macro-level environments drive dietary behaviours of adolescents and adults in urban Africa. More studies are needed for adolescents and men, and studies widening the geographical scope to encompass all African countries
FULFIL Trial: Once-Daily Triple Therapy in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
RATIONALE: Randomized data comparing triple therapy with dual inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are limited. OBJECTIVES: We compared the effects of once-daily triple therapy on lung function and health-related quality of life with twice-daily ICS/LABA therapy. METHODS: FULFIL was a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy study comparing 24 weeks of once-daily triple therapy (fluticasone furoate/umeclidinium/vilanterol 100 μg/62.5 μg/25 μg; ELLIPTA(®) inhaler) with twice-daily ICS/LABA therapy (budesonide/formoterol 400 μg/12 μg; Turbuhaler(®)). A patient subgroup remained on blinded treatment for up to 52 weeks. Co-primary endpoints were change from baseline in trough forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and in St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) Total score, at Week 24. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In the intent-to-treat population (N = 1,810) at Week 24 for triple therapy (n = 911) and ICS/LABA therapy (n = 899): mean change from baseline in FEV1 was 142 mL (95% confidence interval [CI], 126,158) and -29 mL (95% CI, -46,-13), respectively; mean change from baseline SGRQ was -6.6 units (95% CI, -7.4,-5.7) and -4.3 units (95% CI, -5.2,-3.4), respectively. For both endpoints, the between-group differences were statistically significant (P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant reduction in moderate/severe exacerbation rate with triple versus ICS/LABA therapy (35% reduction, 95% CI, 14,51; P = 0.002). The safety profile of triple therapy reflected the known profiles of the components. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the benefits of single inhaler triple therapy compared with ICS/LABA therapy, in patients with advanced COPD.
