Business Ethics Code of Ethics and Business Conduct

    Get PDF
Researchers find that an organizations culture is a good indicator of the business profit that the corporation produces and that corporate integrity is a core aspect of culture. This article provides you with a complete understanding of what business ethics entails and reflects its relevance for any business and why it should be integrated into any enterprise. This article addressed the most relevant elements and attributes that can be contained in the code of conduct to have a clearer understanding of its significance and what should be prevented as it is regarded. The code of conduct of the United Nations World Food Program has been contrasted to a code of conduct utilized by a local corporation to demonstrate the shortage of features required in Lebanon. To reflect the use of code of conduct in small and medium-sized enterprises in Lebanon, phone call surveys were carried out. Just 12% of them have a written code of behavior. The position of H.R. divisions and management is quite important for every company continuity. It is their duty and obligation to determine their employees ethical behavior

Thermal correction to the Casimir force, radiative heat transfer, and an experiment

The low-temperature asymptotic expressions for the Casimir interaction between two real metals described by Leontovich surface impedance are obtained in the framework of thermal quantum field theory. It is shown that the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of infrared optics vanishes in the limit of zero temperature. By contrast, the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of the Drude model attains at zero temperature a positive value which depends on the parameters of a system, i.e., the Nernst heat theorem is violated. Thus, the impedance of infrared optics withstands the thermodynamic test, whereas the impedance of the Drude model does not. We also perform a phenomenological analysis of the thermal Casimir force and of the radiative heat transfer through a vacuum gap between real metal plates. The characterization of a metal by means of the Leontovich impedance of the Drude model is shown to be inconsistent with experiment at separations of a few hundred nanometers. A modification of the impedance of infrared optics is suggested taking into account relaxation processes. The power of radiative heat transfer predicted from this impedance is several times less than previous predictions due to different contributions from the transverse electric evanescent waves. The physical meaning of low frequencies in the Lifshitz formula is discussed. It is concluded that new measurements of radiative heat transfer are required to find out the adequate description of a metal in the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. svjour.cls is used, to appear in Eur. Normal and Lateral Casimir Forces between Deformed Plates

The Casimir force between macroscopic bodies depends strongly on their shape and orientation. To study this geometry dependence in the case of two deformed metal plates, we use a path integral quantization of the electromagnetic field which properly treats the many-body nature of the interaction, going beyond the commonly used pairwise summation (PWS) of van der Waals forces. For arbitrary deformations we provide an analytical result for the deformation induced change in Casimir energy, which is exact to second order in the deformation amplitude. For the specific case of sinusoidally corrugated plates, we calculate both the normal and the lateral Casimir forces. The deformation induced change in the Casimir interaction of a flat and a corrugated plate shows an interesting crossover as a function of the ratio of the mean platedistance H to the corrugation length \lambda: For \lambda \ll H we find a slower decay \sim H^{-4}, compared to the H^{-5} behavior predicted by PWS which we show to be valid only for \lambda \gg H. The amplitude of the lateral force between two corrugated plates which are out of registry is shown to have a maximum at an optimal wavelength of \lambda \approx 2.5 H. With increasing H/\lambda \gtrsim 0.3 the PWS approach becomes a progressively worse description of the lateral force due to many-body effects. These results may be of relevance for the design and operation of novel microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and other nanoscale devices.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stones are a common complication of hyperoxaluria. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective and preventive effects of Ulva lactuca aqueous extract, ulvan polysaccharides and atorvastatin on ethylene glycol-induced hyperoxaluria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats between 110 and 145 g in weight were used in the study, Ulva lactuca aqueous extract and polysaccharides were prepared. The male albino rats were supplemented with 0.75 percent ethylene glycol (v/v) in their drinking water for six weeks to induce hyperoxaluria. Ulvan infusions (100 mg/kg body weight), ulvan polysaccharides (100 mg/kg body weight), and atorvastatin (two milligrams/kg body weight) to treat hyperoxaluric rats for four weeks (every other day) were used. Weight loss, serum creatinine, serum urea, serum uric acid, serum oxalate, kidney oxalate, kidney lipid peroxidation, and kidney DNA fragmentation and kidney histopathological studies were done. RESULTS: Weight loss, rise of serum creatinine, serum urea, serum uric acid, serum oxalate, kidney oxalate, kidney lipid peroxidation, and kidney DNA fragmentation were all shown to be prevented by the addition of atorvastatin, polysaccharides, or aqueous extract, respectively. Catalase (CAT) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, and histopathological perturbations were all significantly reduced by the medicines that were studied. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperoxaluria caused by ethylene glycol may be prevented by a combination of Ulva lactuca aqueous extract, ulvan polysaccharides, and atorvastatin. A reduction in renal oxidative stress and an improvement of the antioxidant defense system may be responsible for these protective benefits. However, Ulva lactuca infusion and ulvan polysaccharides need to be studied further in humans, in order to determine their efficacy and safety

The overarching goal of this study was to produce a global map of rainfed cropland areas (GMRCA) and calculate country-by-country rainfed area statistics using remote sensing data. A suite of spatial datasets, methods and protocols for mapping GMRCA were described. These consist of: (a) data fusion and composition of multi-resolution time-series mega-file data-cube (MFDC), (b) image segmentation based on precipitation, temperature, and elevation zones, (c) spectral correlation similarity (SCS), (d) protocols for class identification and labeling through uses of SCS R2-values, bi-spectral plots, space-time spiral curves (ST-SCs), rich source of field-plot data, and zoom-in-views of Google Earth (GE), and (e) techniques for resolving mixed classes by decision tree algorithms, and spatial modeling. The outcome was a 9-class GMRCA from which country-by-country rainfed area statistics were computed for the end of the last millennium. The global rainfed cropland area estimate from the GMRCA 9-class map was 1.13 billion hectares (Bha). The total global cropland areas (rainfed plus irrigated) was 1.53 Bha which was close to national statistics compiled by FAOSTAT (1.51 Bha). The accuracies and errors of GMRCA were assessed using field-plot and Google Earth data points. The accuracy varied between 92 and 98% with kappa value of about 0.76, errors of omission of 2-8%, and the errors of commission of 19-36%
