Modelling of water supply cost for offshore platforms

    Get PDF
An offshore platform like other industries requires water resources to support daily operation and activities. Supplying water to offshore platform mainly executed in two conventional ways: transported using offshore supply vessel and self- produced onboard platform using seawater desalination process commonly known as a freshwater generator. An alternative method such as water reuse or water recycling also received growing attention as one of a promising integrated solution for improvement of water resources. However, each water supply options have different characteristics and limitations in term of supply capacity, cost associated and level of water quality. Hence, it’s difficult to identify which water supply sources that fulfil the demand and cost-effective. This paper proposes a new mathematical model namely Economic Water Supply Model (EWSM) for the operating cost function that includes the most representative variables in the process. This model enables decision-makers and owners to assess the economic value from the different sources of water supply for the offshore platform. The calculation of these extended cost function also enables a detailed comparison to be made of the various water sources from an economic of view in order to analyze the effects of supply capacity for costeffective of various suppliers. In this sense, a model of the structure costs associated with each of the available water supply technologies can be useful input for future design, planning and operational stage of offshore water supply process

Proposed minimum luminous range for existing lighthouses in this age of global navigation satellite systems by using the correlation between light intensity and luminous range

    Get PDF
Long-range visual marine aids to navigation are not required for current marine navigational practices. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a minimum luminous range for major lighthouses that are still in existence to sustain the operation of the lighthouses in the future. Two steps were involved in the determination of the minimum luminous range, namely the modification of the existing geographical range formula, and the finding of a strong linear correlation between the light intensity and the luminous range with the lowest gradient possible in a graph. The application of the minimum luminous range would eliminate the loom of light beyond the geographical range of the lighthouse. This approach was applied to seven major lighthouses in Peninsular Malaysia, which resulted in a minimum luminous range of between 12 nm to 14 nm, which was a reduction from the existing range of 18 nm to 25 nm. The validation of the minimum luminous range was performed in two ways; using a Full Mission Ship Simulator (FMSS), and matching the proposed minimum luminous range with the lighting system available. The results of the validation by using the FMSS between the luminous range of 25 nm and 14 nm showed that the light could be sighted and identified at 58.7 nm and 58.6 nm, respectively, which was, therefore, not significant. The validation by matching with the lighting equipment available in the market showed that the eight-tier VLB-44, which has replaced the rotating lighting system in the US since 2008, was highly matched with the proposed minimum luminous range. This further validated the minimum luminous range. The minimum luminous range is sufficient for current navigational uses and may reduce the costs for procuring and maintaining lighting systems, and will be able to sustain the operations of lighthouses in this GNSS age

A review on the selection of granular fertiliser distribution methods for Malaysia’s paddy field on a large scale.

High efficiency distribution applicators, such as boom sprayer (air blower concept), Kuhn Axis fertiliser spreaders (rotating disc concept), and pendulum spreader (magnetic concept) were the response to the call to distribute granular fertiliser to a paddy field on a large scale. Each of these distribution applicators had their own characteristics which are optimised for different purposes. This paper shows the review results after studying journal papers to select the most suitable applicators for Malaysia’s paddy field on a large scale. The analyses included the compliments of these applicators toward the type of granular fertiliser used in Malaysia’s paddy field, the maintenance cost of these applicators, the suitability of machine to be used in the landscape of Malaysia’s paddy, the distribution areas covered by these applicators, and the accuracy of distribution. The review concluded that Kuhn Axis fertiliser spreader was found to be the most suitable applicator compared to other applicators

Configurable triple wavelength semiconductor optical amplifier fiber laser using multiple broadband mirrors

    Get PDF
A configurable, triple wavelength fiber laser based on broadband mirrors (BBMs) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is demonstrated. The laser uses a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the primary gain medium due to its inhomogeneous broadening property that allows for the generation high intensity lasing wavelengths. The combination of the AWG and BBMs allows for triple lasing wavelength outputs with channel spacing from 0.8 to 4.0 nm to be obtained. The generated output is adjustable between 1540.6 and 1548.6 nm. The proposed SOA-based system is stable and can be used as a reserve laser source for wavelength division multiplexing systems. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Archetypal criticism : the notion of monomania overturns the hero’s journey

    Get PDF
Research have presented a broad overview concerning the notion of Archetypes. While previous studies equate the significance of Archetypes in recurring nature and familiarization of literary elements, the ways in which Archetypes ‘find’ cracks-in the stories are perpetually relegated. The relative significance of Archetypes, by taking into consideration works of novels, expose the gap between the oscillation of ‘departure’ and ‘conclusion.’ This study attempts to explore the many ways in which monomania is preserved, contested, and how monomania creates an ‘unstable alliance’ between characters and plots. Specifically, the notion of monomania is used to destabilize Archetypal Hero’s journey. First, the study sheds light on the Archetypal Hero character, named Heathcliff, in Wuthering Heights (1847) by Emily Bronte. Second, monomania is used as a lens to examine one of the central characters, Captain Ahab in Moby Dick (1851) by Herman Melville. By focusing on the concept of Archetypal Hero’s Journey, the influence of monomaniac is brought to the centre of discussion. As such, the destabilisation of plots and characters is described in its vibrancy through the lens of monomaniac

This research examined how managers in universities incorporate non-financial measures in their Learning Management Systems decision-making processes and particularly focused on the importance of the Human Capital perspective in LMS decision making processes. A mixed-methods approach to data collection was used involving both interviews and questionnaires. The qualitative data from the interviews were coded and analysed. A descriptive coding method using thematic analysis was used for the data coding. The qualitative data were analysed using an inductive approach where the categories of criteria and indicators were not determined before the interview. The participants in this research were five members of LMS decision-making teams at two different universities in Australia and 24 participants from different universities in Malaysia who were involved in LMS decision- making pro-cesses at their universities. The results of this research indicated that there was substantial support for using a multi-dimensional decision making model among IT decision makers at universities, particu-larly the Human Capital perspective and they believed that Human Capital measures are important and should be considered in a LMS decision making process. The research has both implications for theory and for practitioners where it contributes to the knowledge on LMS decision making in univer-sities and IT decision making in general, and also in improving actual decision making practices

    Get PDF
A novel S-band multimode Brillouin–Raman random fiber laser based on distributed feedback of Rayleigh scattered light is demonstrated. It relies on a short length, 7.7 km long angle-cleaved dispersion compensating fiber in a mirror-less open cavity. Two 1425 nm laser diodes at a modest operating power amplify a Brillouin pump (BP) signal, which in turn generates a multi-wavelength laser output through the stimulated Brillouin scattering. Eleven Brillouin Stokes lines, spanning from 1515.15 to 1516.00 nm, were obtained at a Raman pump power of 361.66 mW. Out of these, five odd Brillouin Stokes lines were generated with a flat peak power of about 0 dBm
