    THE POWER OF INTEGRATION TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE PERFORMANCE: A MODEL TO MINIMIZE TECHNOSTRESS AMONG FRONTLINE RESTAURANT EMPLOYEES BY COMBINING JOB AND EMPLOYEE RESOURCES

    To develop a model that integrates restaurant and employee resources to overcome technostress and achieve sustainable performance. This qualitative study is based on twenty-two semi-structured interviews with restaurant managers and frontline employees (FLEs) to comprehensively understand how restaurant resources and personnel can be employed to combat technostress and achieve sustainable performance. Restaurant FLEs experience technostress from multiple sources, including unclear work-life boundaries, complex new systems, job insecurity, and the frequent use of new technologies. In addition, restaurant managers and FLEs concur that integrating restaurant and FLE resources is an effective model for reducing technostress and achieving FLEs' sustainable performance. The study expands the JD-R model to address the challenges faced by FLEs in managing technology-induced job demands, offering a comprehensive solution that benefits restaurants and employees. This approach considers the role of both employers and employees in managing technostress, leading to a supportive work environment and improved sustainable performance

    POST-PANDEMIC DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: MITIGATING TECHNOSTRESS AND INCREASING WELL-BEING IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY VIA THE PERSON-TECHNOLOGY FIT MODEL

    Understanding how to reduce employee tech stress is crucial for improving workforce well-being and maximizing operational efficiency in the tourism and hospitality sectors due to the post-COVID-19 digital transformation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of enhancing restaurant employees' digital transformation readiness and technological device readiness on reducing employees' technostress. The study employed a qualitative methodology of semi-structured interviews, primarily addressing the paucity of scholarly investigations within this specific research area. The interviewee cohort encompassed both managerial and staff members from two distinct categories of restaurants (i.e., fast-food and casual dining restaurants). The study found eight factors related to the readiness of restaurant employees for digital transformation, as well as four factors related to the readiness of restaurant technological devices. According to interviewees, these factors have been found to reduce restaurant employees' techno stressors. Theoretically, this study extends the digital transformation readiness model from three to eight factors, and the study extends the person technology fit model from three to four factors to reduce employees' technostress. From a managerial perspective, restaurant managers can use the study framework to enhance employees' technological skills, foster a positive attitude toward digital transformation, and invest in user-friendly technology, which can ultimately reduce technostress and improve employee well-being and performance in the dynamic hospitality industry

    LOCUS OF CONTROL THEORY IN TREATING TOURIST BEHAVIOR: THE THEORY ROOTS AND RESEARCH DIRECTION IN DESTINATION BRANDING FIELD

    We aim to shed light on this issue by reviewing the roots and development of the locus of control theory. Moreover, we will introduce how we can use this development, in theory, to provide a new research direction in the tourism service field. A theory-based review was conducted to investigate the locus of control theory roots and its potential implications in the tourism industry using the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) list to explore the current literature. We followed the PRISMA methodology to collect the data from the Scopus database as well as Google Scholar and ResearchGate. The study found that the locus of control theory has its roots in social psychology and has been developed over the years to explain individual differences in behavior and decision-making. In the tourism service field, we found that understanding the locus of control can help service providers tailor their services to meet the needs and expectations of different types of tourists. This will contribute to attribution literature in psychological aspects and tourism literature with a deep understanding of how tourists behave and interpret differently

    Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey

    Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training.     Socializing One Health: an innovative strategy to investigate social and behavioral risks of emerging viral threats

    In an effort to strengthen global capacity to prevent, detect, and control infectious diseases in animals and people, the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Emerging Pandemic Threats (EPT) PREDICT project funded development of regional, national, and local One Health capacities for early disease detection, rapid response, disease control, and risk reduction. From the outset, the EPT approach was inclusive of social science research methods designed to understand the contexts and behaviors of communities living and working at human-animal-environment interfaces considered high-risk for virus emergence. Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, PREDICT behavioral research aimed to identify and assess a range of socio-cultural behaviors that could be influential in zoonotic disease emergence, amplification, and transmission. This broad approach to behavioral risk characterization enabled us to identify and characterize human activities that could be linked to the transmission dynamics of new and emerging viruses. This paper provides a discussion of implementation of a social science approach within a zoonotic surveillance framework. We conducted in-depth ethnographic interviews and focus groups to better understand the individual- and community-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices that potentially put participants at risk for zoonotic disease transmission from the animals they live and work with, across 6 interface domains. When we asked highly-exposed individuals (ie. bushmeat hunters, wildlife or guano farmers) about the risk they perceived in their occupational activities, most did not perceive it to be risky, whether because it was normalized by years (or generations) of doing such an activity, or due to lack of information about potential risks. Integrating the social sciences allows investigations of the specific human activities that are hypothesized to drive disease emergence, amplification, and transmission, in order to better substantiate behavioral disease drivers, along with the social dimensions of infection and transmission dynamics. Understanding these dynamics is critical to achieving health security--the protection from threats to health-- which requires investments in both collective and individual health security. Involving behavioral sciences into zoonotic disease surveillance allowed us to push toward fuller community integration and engagement and toward dialogue and implementation of recommendations for disease prevention and improved health security

    Management of water resources to control groundwater levels in the southern area of the western Nile delta, Egypt

    The present study was initiated with the objective of simulating and predicting the effect of future development on the groundwater flow and levels. This supports applications for future planning and wise management of water resources. The study area extends south of El Nubariya canal including Sadat City area and its vicinities in the western Nile delta region. A numerical groundwater flow model (MODFLOW) has been employed to simulate flow and get the budget of groundwater in the study area. The model showed that about 28,101,041 m3/day of surface water is infiltrated to groundwater dominantly from canals and excess irrigation water. About the same quantity (28,101,052 m3/day), is discharged from groundwater through production wells, open drains and through some reaches of canals. Three development scenarios were simulated to give predictions of the impact of future increasing recharge, construction of new canal and new open drains, and also increased pumping on the groundwater levels in the study area

    Enhancing Digital Presence for Maximizing Customer Value in Fast-Food Restaurants

    Digital transformation has altered the way customers interact with restaurants. As a result, digital transformation has had an enormous impact, changing restaurant customer value. Therefore, this research aims to develop a dynamic and sustainable method for creating customer value in digital transformation. This study suggested digital dynamic capabilities and digital customer orientation as a process model (i.e., sensing, seizing, transforming, and refining) to develop digital transformation and create a dynamic customer value. We chose fast-food restaurants in Egypt to examine the proposed model using a qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews with fast-food managers and hospitality experts. The findings indicated that fast-food restaurants’ different digital transformation capabilities and tools (e.g., value innovation, SWOT analysis, artificial intelligence, new technology selection criteria, digital maturity, building several digital platforms, and gathering and analyzing customers’ online reviews) help them create customer value. However, interviewees highlighted how well-suited the suggested digital dynamic capabilities are to serve as drivers of digital transformation in fast-food restaurants and create a dynamic customer value. This research expands the dynamic capabilities theory by adding digital customer orientation (i.e., proactive and reactive to customer feedback) to develop digital transformation and create customer value in fast-food restaurants. This research provides fast-food restaurant managers with an in-depth explanation of how to implement the digital dynamic capabilities model for executing digital transformation and developing a new dynamic customer value

    Analyzing the Influence of eWOM on Customer Perception of Value and Brand Love in Hospitality Enterprise

    Studying brand love is vital for hospitality establishments because it helps them understand their customers’ feelings and perceptions toward their brands, especially with the growing number of hospitality brands. However, previous hospitality research has neglected the relationship between customer value and brand love. Therefore, this study investigates the influence of customer value on brand love of fast-food restaurants with a moderating role of electronic word of mouth. The research model was empirically evaluated on 385 fast-food restaurant brand customers in Greater Cairo, Egypt, who had previously participated in restaurants’ online communities. We used structural equation modeling to examine the research data. Results indicated that customer value is crucial in increasing brand love sub-dimensions (i.e., intimacy, passion, and commitment). The results also confirmed that the utilitarian value affects more than the hedonic value of brand love sub-dimensions, and the latter significantly impacted customer loyalty. In addition, electronic word of mouth moderated the relationship between the two types of customer value and brand love sub-dimensions. Hence, the current study adds a new factor (i.e., customer value) that affects the brand love of restaurants to the hospitality literature. Accordingly, the study will present several practical implications to increase customer value and, thus, brand love and customer loyalty

    Abstract The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is still difficult to be controlled. The spread of this virus and the emergence of new variants are considered a great challenge worldwide. Disturbance in infection control guidelines implementation, use of steroids, antibiotics, hospital crowdedness, and repeated use of oxygen masks during the management of critically ill COVID-19 patients lead to an increase in the rate of opportunistic infections. So, patients need to fight both the virus with its different variants and opportunistic pathogens including bacteria and fungi especially patients with diabetes mellitus, malignancy, or those who undergo hemodialysis and receive deferoxamine. During the pandemic, many cases of Mucormycosis associated with COVID-19 infection were observed in many countries. In this review, we discuss risk factors that increase the chance of infection by opportunistic pathogens, especially fungal pathogens, recent challenges, and control measures
