    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to investigate cultural translation procedures in four novels of Ibrāhīm al-Kawnī by Arabic-English translators. It also aims to assess to what extent the style and culture of the original work has been conveyed and preserved. In other words, it focuses on the original language, the language of the author and the source text. The aim is to allow the target reader to understand as much as possible of the content of the source text. Furthermore, the work considers translation equivalence theory as a framework within which several translations of the meaning of cultural terms have been analytically evaluated. The researcher selected 97 translated cultural words, phrases and identified various cultural and linguistic problems in their translation

In chapter 1, which represents joint work with Gilmer, we define an index two subcategory of a 3-dimensional cobordism category. The objects of the category are surfaces equipped with Lagrangian subspaces of their real first homology. This generalizes the result of [9] where surfaces are equipped with Lagrangian subspaces of their rational first homology. To define such subcategory, we give a formula for the parity of the Maslov index of a triple of Lagrangian subspaces of a skew symmetric bilinear form over R. In chapter 2, we find two bases for the lattices of the SU(2)-TQFT-theory modules of the torus over given rings of integers. We find bases analogous to the bases defined in [13] for the lattices of the SO(3)-TQFT-theory modules of the torus. Moreover, we discuss the quantization functors (V_{p}, Z_{p}) for p = 1, and p = 2. Then we give concrete bases for the lattices of the modules in the 2-theory. We use the above results to discuss the ideal invariant defined in [7]. The ideal can be computed for all the 3-manifolds using the 2-theory, and for all 3-manifolds with torus boundary using the SU(2)-TQFT-theory. In fact, we show that this ideal using the SU(2)-TQFT-theory is contained in the product of the ideals using the 2-theory and the SO(3)-TQFT-theory under a certain change of coefficients, and it is equal in the case of torus boundary. In chapter 3, we give a congruence which relates the quantum invariant of a prime-periodic 3-manifold to the quantum invariant of its orbit space. We do this for quantum invariant that is associated to any modular category over an integrally closed ground ring

Consociational Democracy and Peripheral Capitalism in Late-Modernising Societies: A Political Economy of Lebanon

Following the assassination of Prime Minister Hariri in 2005, Lebanon witnessed vigorous debate over the nature of its political system raising the question of whether it is based on consociation between confessions or consensus and balance of power between political factions. Lebanon has traditionally alternated between several extremes: from ‘the happy phenomenon’, a liberal example of self-perpetuating prosperity and ‘the only Arab democracy’ to a haven for warlords and the scene for recurring political impasses and violence. Underpinning these extremes, however, is the national myth that Lebanon is the ‘Switzerland of the East’. Whether this refers to its mountainous geography, freewheeling capitalism, salience of the tertiary sector or the politico-cultural cantonisation of the country is the subject matter of this research. This study explores political economy and political culture in Lebanon by locating the confessional subcultures within the theoretical framework of ‘hybrid modernities’. The research presented in this study, hence, aims to make sense of the perennial cycles of conflict and political impasses which have scarred modern Lebanese history. This is done by critically examining the intersections between consociationalism as a political superstructure, peripheral capitalism as a political economy and confessionalism as a political paradigm. The theory of ‘hybrid modernities’ is utilised in an attempt to redefine ‘modernity’ as an inclusionary and dynamic process whereby multiple socio-cultural projects are continually constructed and reconstructed through negotiation and conflict, hence, producing a hybrid order. Conflict is, therefore, interpreted as a mechanism of redistribution and negotiation between multiple subnational centres as opposed to a modality of state-society relations. Accordingly, the vulnerabilities of modernity and the unintelligibility of its constellations are mitigated not through bureaucratic universalism and the logics of the market, but through asymmetric relations of power between zu‘ama (patrons) and their ’atbā‘ (clients). The pervasiveness of political patronage, therefore, is not a relic of pre-modernity but a ‘modern’ and adaptive response to the disarticulations of Lebanese capitalism. Patron-client dyads capitalise on and reinforce social relations within vertical segments, hence, modernising and instrumentalising ‘the confession’. Social change, therefore, emanates from the subnational periphery (the confession) and targets the subnational and, eventually, the national centre. In responding to the aims and objectives of this study, ethnographic research was conducted to explore the intersections between the disarticulations of late developmentalism in Lebanon and the social construction of ‘imagined communities’. Focusing on the triangulation of consociationalism, peripheral capitalism and confessionalism as the political modus operandi in Lebanon and the Shi‘a as a subnational ‘imagined community’, this research explores the intersections between political economy and political culture in the production of multiple hybrid modernities within the multicentred Lebanese system. This is achieved by examining the political economy dynamics of the social construction of ‘the Shi‘a’ as well as the ontological worldviews and modus vivendi which underpin its socio-cultural project. In this context, Hezbollah is conceptualised as the ‘cohesive core’ of a social movement which articulates its own authenticated modernity and produces social change through a dynamic and bidirectional process facilitated by the party’s monolithic non-state welfare sector, civil society, media and the ulema

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of various concentrations of NaOCl on shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin of primary teeth, prepared with laser and bur. Methods: In this in vitro study, 48 primary molars were sectioned at mesiodistal direction and were randomly divided into 6 groups; G1: bur, G2: bur + NaOCl 2.5%, G3: bur + NaOCl 5.25%, G4: laser, G5: laser + NaOCl 2.5%, G6: laser + NaOCl 5.25%. One-Step Plus adhesive was applied after phosphoric acid gel and NaOCl over the dentin surfaces for all groups, and composite resin cylinders were bonded to the samples. After thermocycling, shear bond strengths of composite resin to dentin were measured and statistical analyses were done by means of t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA).Results: The mean shear bond strength showed no significant difference between the groups prepared with bur (13.82 ± 3.49) and laser (14.18 ± 3.65) (P > 0.05). The mean difference of shear bond strength between three groups G1, G2 and G3 and between G4, G5 and G6 were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) figures showed an irregular surface in laser groups and fairly complete removal of smear layer from the orifices of the dentinal tubules, in the group in which NaOCl was used. Conclusion: The application of different concentrations of NaOCl does not significantly improve the bond strength in dentin surfaces prepared with laser or bur
