Micropulsations in the electric field near the plasmapause, observed by ISEE-1
The occurrence of micropulsations near and inside the plasmapause was surveyed. The observed pulsations, classified as Pc3 and Pi2, are discussed. In addition one single event of Pc1 was observed. The frequencies in the Pc3 and Pi2 bands, the amplitude ranges, and the direction of rotation for the electric field vector are reported
Physical Conditions in Quasar Outflows: VLT Observations of QSO 2359-1241
We analyze the physical conditions of the outflow seen in QSO 2359-1241 (NVSS
J235953-124148), based on high resolution spectroscopic VLT observations. This
object was previously studied using Keck/HIRES data. The main improvement over
the HIRES results is our ability to accurately determine the number density of
the outflow. For the major absorption component, level population from five
different Fe II excited level yields n_H=10^4.4 cm^-3 with less than 20%
scatter. We find that the Fe ii absorption arises from a region with roughly
constant conditions and temperature greater than 9000 K, before the ionization
front where temperature and electron density drop. Further, we model the
observed spectra and investigate the effects of varying gas metalicities and
the spectral energy distribution of the incident ionizing radiation field. The
accurately measured column densities allow us to determine the ionization
parameter log(U) = -2.4 and total column density of the outflow (log(N_H) =
20.6 cm^-2). Combined with the number density finding, these are stepping
stones towards determining the mass flux and kinetic luminosity of the outflow,

Resistance training in overweight women on a ketogenic diet conserved lean body mass while reducing body fat
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of 10 weeks resistance training in combination with either a regular diet (Ex) or a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet (Lc+Ex) in overweight women on body weight and body composition.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>18 untrained women between 20 and 40 years with BMI ≥ 25 kg*m<sup>-2 </sup>were randomly assigned into the Ex or Lc+Ex group. Both groups performed 60-100 min of varied resistance exercise twice weekly. Dietary estimates were based on two 4-day weighed records. Body composition was estimated using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for total-, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol, triacylglycerols, and glucose.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>16 subjects were included in the analyses. Percentage of energy (En%) from carbohydrates, fat and protein was 6, 66, and 22 respectively in the (Lc+Ex) group and 41, 34, 17 in the Ex group. Mean weight change (pre-post) was -5.6 ± 2.6 kg in Lc+Ex; (p < 0.001) and 0.8 ± 1.5 kg in Ex; (p = 0.175). The Lc+Ex group lost 5.6 ± 2.9 kg of fat mass (p = 0.001) with no significant change in lean body mass (LBM), while the Ex group gained 1.6 ± 1.8 kg of LBM (p = 0.045) with no significant change in fat mass (p = 0.059). Fasting blood lipids and blood glucose were not significantly affected by the interventions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Resistance exercise in combination with a ketogenic diet may reduce body fat without significantly changing LBM, while resistance exercise on a regular diet may increase LBM in without significantly affecting fat mass. Fasting blood lipids do not seem to be negatively influenced by the combination of resistance exercise and a low carbohydrate diet.</p
A New Class of Majoron-Emitting Double-Beta Decays
Motivated by the excess events that have recently been found near the
endpoints of the double beta decay spectra of several elements, we re-examine
models in which double beta decay can proceed through the neutrinoless emission
of massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons (majorons). Noting that models proposed to
date for this process must fine-tune either a scalar mass or a VEV to be less
than 10 keV, we introduce a new kind of majoron which avoids this difficulty by
carrying lepton number . We analyze in detail the requirements that
models of both the conventional and our new type must satisfy if they are to
account for the observed excess events. We find: (1) the electron sum-energy
spectrum can be used to distinguish the two classes of models from one another;
(2) the decay rate for the new models depends on different nuclear matrix
elements than for ordinary majorons; and (3) all models require a (pseudo)
Dirac neutrino, having a mass of a several hundred MeV, which mixes with

Large-Scale Agile Transformation: A Case Study of Transforming Business, Development and Operations
Today, product development organizations are adopting agile methods in units outside the software development unit, such as in sales, market, legal, operations working with the customer. This broader adoption of agile methods has been labeled large-scale agile transformation and is considered a particular type of organizational change, originating in the software development units. So far, there is little research-based advice on conducting such transformations. Aiming to contribute towards providing relevant research advice on large-scale agile transformation, we apply a research-based framework for evaluating organizational agility on a product development program in a maritime service provider organization. We found that doing a large-scale agile transformation involves many significant challenges, such as having a shared understanding of the problem, getting access to users, and getting commitment to change that needs to be done. In order to overcome such challenges, we discuss the need for a holistic and integrated approach to agile transformation involving all the units linked to software development.publishedVersio
Deactivation of Li by vacancy clusters in ion-implanted and flash-annealed ZnO
Li is present in hydrothermally grown ZnO at high concentrations and is known to compensate both n- and p-type doping due to its amphoteric nature. However, Li can be manipulated by annealing and ion implantation in ZnO. Fast, 20 ms flash anneals in the 900–1400°C range result in vacancy cluster formation and, simultaneously, a low-resistive layer in the implanted part of the He- and Li-implanted ZnO. The vacancy clusters, involving 3-4 Zn vacancies, trap and deactivate Li, leaving other in-grown donors to determine the electrical properties. Such clusters are not present in sufficient concentrations after longer (1h) anneals because of a relatively low dissociation barrier ∼2.6 ± 0.3 eV, so ZnO remains compensated until Li diffuses out after 1250°C anneals.Peer reviewe

Task 9 - centrifugal membrane filtration. Semi-annual report April 1--September 30, 1996
This report assesses a centrifugal membrane filtration technology developed by SpinTek Membrane Systems, Inc. The technology uses supported microporous membranes rotating at high rpm, under pressure, to separate suspended and colloidal solids from liquid streams, yielding a solids-free permeate stream and a highly concentrated solids stream. The Tank Waste Focus Area was chosen for study. Membrane-screening tests were performed with the STC-X4 static test cell filtration unit, using five ceramic membranes with different pore size and composition. Based on permeate flux, a 0.25-{mu}m TiO{sub 2}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} membrane was selected for detailed performance evaluation using the centrifugal membrane filtration unit with a surrogate tank waste solution. The performance of the unit was evaluated with a statistical test design that determined the effect of temperature, pressure, membrane rotational speed, and solids loading on permeate flux. All four variables were found to be statistically significant, with the magnitude of the effect in the order of temperature, solids loading, rotor speed, and pressure. Temperature, rotor speed, and pressure had an increasing effect on flux with increasing value, while increases in solids loading showed a decrease in permeate flux. Significant interactions between rotor speed and solids loading and pressure and solids loading were also observed. The regression equation derived from test data had a correlation coefficient of 0.934, which represents a useful predictive capability for integrating the technology into DOE cleanup efforts. An extended test run performed on surrogate waste showed some deterioration in filtration performance, based on flux, apparently due to the buildup of solids near the inner portion of the membrane where relative membrane velocities were low. Continued testing of the system will focus on modifications to the shear pattern across the entire membrane surface to affect improved long-term performance
Mathematical retroreflectors
Retroreflectors are optical devices that reverse the direction of incident
beams of light. Here we present a collection of billiard type retroreflectors
consisting of four objects; three of them are asymptotically perfect
retroreflectors, and the fourth one is a retroreflector which is very close to
perfect. Three objects of the collection have recently been discovered and
published or submitted for publication. The fourth object - notched angle - is
a new one; a proof of its retroreflectivity is given.Comment: 32 pages, 19 figure
Diagnostic Accuracy of Bone Turnover Markers and Bone Histology in Patients With CKD Treated by Dialysis
BACKGROUND:
The management of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder requires the assessment of bone turnover, which most often is based on parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration, the utility of which remains controversial.
STUDY DESIGN:
Cross-sectional retrospective diagnostic test study.
SETTING & PARTICIPANTS:
492 dialysis patients from Brazil, Portugal, Turkey, and Venezuela with prior bone biopsy and stored (-20 °C) serum.
INDEX TESTS:
Samples were analyzed for PTH (intact [iPTH] and whole PTH), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (bALP), and amino-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP).
REFERENCE TEST:
Bone histomorphometric assessment of turnover (bone formation rate/bone surface [BFR/BS]) and receiver operating characteristic curves for discriminating diagnostic ability.
RESULTS:
The biomarkers iPTH and bALP or combinations thereof allowed discrimination of low from nonlow and high from nonhigh BFR/BS, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve > 0.70 but 323.0 pg/mL. The best cutoff for bALP to discriminate low from nonlow BFR/BS was <33.1 U/L, and for high from nonhigh BFR/BS, 42.1U/L. Using the KDIGO practice guideline PTH values of greater than 2 but less than 9 times the upper limit of normal, sensitivity and specificity of iPTH level to discriminate low from nonlow turnover bone disease were 65.7% and 65.3%, and to discriminate high from nonhigh were 37.0% and 85.8%, respectively.
LIMITATIONS:
Cross-sectional design without consideration of therapy. Potential limited generalizability with samples from 4 countries.
CONCLUSIONS:
The serum biomarkers iPTH, whole PTH, and bALP were able to discriminate low from nonlow BFR/BS, whereas iPTH and bALP were able to discriminate high from nonhigh BFR/BS. Prospective studies are required to determine whether evaluating trends in biomarker concentrations could guide therapeutic decisions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
SMMC method for two-neutrino double beta decay
Shell Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) techniques are used to calculate two-neutrino
double beta decay matrix elements. We validate the approach against direct
diagonalization for Ca in the complete -shell using the KB3
interaction. The method is then applied to the decay of Ge in the
model space using a newly calculated realistic
interaction. Our result for the matrix element is MeV, in
