The Path to Victory: A Comparative Analysis of Mena Region Countries

During the “Arab Spring” the Arab world witnessed a wave of uprisings. As a result of these anti-government movements, four governments of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen were overthrown, three governments of Bahrain, Jordan, and to some points Saudi Arabia were faced with critical difficulties, and one government ,Syria, experienced domestic war. All these happened while some other Middle Eastern countries remained stable. Yet, the remaining questions are: how did these protests emerge? How was the collective identity which is essential for the social movements created? Why were some of these movements successful in overthrowing the regime while the others failed? What factors were involved in the success or failure of these social movements? In order to answer these questions this study reviews the mainstream theories of social movements to examine whether any of these theories are applicable to the case of MENA and whether they can explain the reason behind the formation of movements. This research argues that the traditional theories of social movements fall short in explaining the chaos in the MENA region as well as the reasons behind the formation of uprisings. Accordingly, by in depth analysis of three case studies of Tunisia, Egypt, and Bahrain and through comparing different involved countries in the Arab Spring, this study introduces four existing challenges in the MENA region. Later by defining relevant sub-categories for each challenge, institutional factors, facilitators, and determiners are recognized. Finally, by defining a model, this study claims that the first three challenges, secularism/Islamism, economic, and ethnic/tribal division are the reason behind the formation of social movements of MENA and the last challenge, administrative, sheds light on the variation of outcome of the movements in this region

This thesis is explored the detrimental effects of nonlinear loads in distribution systems and investigated the performances of shunt FACTS devices to overcome these problems with the following main contribution: APLC is an advanced shunt active filter which can mitigate the fundamental voltage harmonic of entire network and limit the THDv and individual harmonic distortion of the entire network below 5% and 3%, respectively, as recommended by most standards such as the IEEE-519

Abstract: In the field of information technology cloud computing is a recently developed technology. In such a complicated system, an effective load balancing scheme is critical in order to meet peak user demands and deliver high-quality services. Load balancing is a way of distributing workload among several nodes over network links in order to maximize resource utilization, decrease data processing and response time, and avoid overload. There have been a number of load balancing algorithms suggested that concentrate on important factors including processing time, response time, and processing costs. These techniques, however, ignore cloud computing scenarios. At the same time, there is a few research works that focuses on the subject of load balancing in cloud computing. Motivated by this issue, this study addresses the load balancing challenge in cloud computing by comparing natural inspired Load Balancing Algorithms based on the resource utilization metric. The chosen load balancing methods will next be tested and assessed using the CloudSim simulator to choose the proper natural inspired Load balancing algorithms that solves the problem of load balancing in cloud computing, according to the result of the simulation it can be concluded that the LBA_HB is better than the HBB_LB based on the results for the response time, MakeSpan, and the degree of imbalance. This paper presents a survey on the activities carried out to improve the learning experience of electrical engineering undergraduate students in power system protection unit in Curtin University, Australia. The unit was conducted initially based on lectures and tutorials where only two sessions on computer simulation and one session of laboratory demonstration were conducted. In academic year of 2013, to improve the learningexperience of students, several computer-based simulations and laboratory experiments were prepared. The students are introduced with two power system analysis software, namely ETAP and PSCAD/EMTDC which are used to demonstrate the overcurrent relays performance and their coordination as well as the time transient analysis of different faults in an electric network where some protection relays are applied. A practical setupcomposed of LabVolt electrical modules and SEL relays is used to simulate an electric network. Several tests are built up to simulate fault and protection layout for transformer and induction motor. Finally, a secondary injection test set is used to introduce the concepts of relay testing and commissioning

Reusing heritage buildings with a compatible function provides the opportunity to sustain their significance. In this regard, the listed traditional houses in Tabriz, as one of the historical cities of Iran, play an important role in presenting cultural heritage values. Privacy as an intangible aspect of culture along with both physical and socio-cultural factors, have played a major role in the spatial organization of traditional Iranian houses, and formed the access hierarchy in the interior spaces. The purpose of this study is assessing the continuity or discontinuity of interior spaces in original and reused states of listed traditional houses in Tabriz from Qajar Era, to contribute to a better understanding of compatibility of new functions with the existing heritage building. The research methodology is based on literature survey for defining the original functions and observation of interior spaces for defining the current functions of each space. Additionally, the analytical approaches of ‘space syntax methodology’ are used to achieve the access hierarchy in space organization of the houses. Findings are derived from the comparison of ‘relative depth value’ as a reflection of privacy; and ‘integration value’ as a reflection of accessibility in both states. Keywords: Residential interior Space, architectural conservation, space syntax method, space organization, space hierarchy.
