    Get PDF
The author responds to Avery Cardinal Dulles\u27s essay and lecture Catholic Social Teaching and American Legal Practice, Fordham Urb. L.J., 277 (2002) (available at http://new.fordhamj.org/demonstration/dc/v30/27_30FordhamUrbLJ277(2002-2003).pdf). She provides a practical perspective on the applications of Catholic social teachings to the practice of law. She concludes that Catholic teachings and law intersect in two areas: in the lawyer\u27s discretion and in the lawyer\u27s professional interactions with others

Investigating Equity Sensitivity as a Moderator of Relations Between Self-Efficacy and Workplace Attitudes

    Get PDF
This study integrated measures of equity sensitivity and self-efficacy in an effort to better understand how these variables may affect job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intent to leave. Equity sensitivity denotes how sensitive people are to overreward and underreward situations and has recently enhanced the accuracy of equity theory in predicting job satisfaction in social exchange situations. Self-efficacy, or task-specific self-confidence, is a central component of Bandura\u27s social cognitive theory, and its influence on individuals\u27 goals, efforts, and task persistence is well documented. Results from a field study of 242 employees in a health care firm support the moderating role of equity sensitivity in relations between self-efficacy and job satisfaction and between self-efficacy and intent to leave, but not between self-efficacy and organizational commitment. Psychological Influences on Referent Choice*

    Get PDF
This article discusses the psychological influences on referent selection. The nature of contemporary work environments, ones characterized by instability and uncertainty, may create increased needs on the part of individuals for comparative information. Individuals use social comparisons for managing both uncertainty and environmental change, and for making critical decisions about one\u27s job. Most literature on referent selection can be categorized along two basic schema: identification of the types of referents that exist and examination of the outcomes that result from referent selection. Studies have identified a multitude of potential referents, primarily drawn from the outcomes being examined, including pay referents, referents linked with one\u27s occupation, education, age and job, and referents derived from an employee\u27s social network

The Political Parties as Organisations of Representation of the Political Rights of Individuals in Albania

    Get PDF
According to the Constitution or laws, individuals today have extensive political rights closely associated with the right to vote. Here is meant the active and passive right of voting. Membership in a party is not only because of the desire, but also for the fact that the party gives individuals the possibility of career progress, further realization of their political rights. The purpose of this paper is to present the development of political parties and individual rights, not only in Albania, but also combined with the European experience. In this paper we will focus on how political parties have evolved as well as the political rights of individuals after the independence in 1912. The development of political parties in Albania has passed in two stages in the communist system where only one party was known and in the democratic system where was recognized political pluralism. Highlighting the role of political parties, as an important promoter of the functioning of state and of the coverage of the political rights of individuals, makes this study important

Schistosome-induced portacaval haemodynamic changes in Rattus rattus are associated with translocation of adult worms to the lungs

    Get PDF
The presence of naturally portacaval shunts has been investigated in the vasculature of normal and Schistosoma mansoni-infected Rattus rattus. Using the technique of injecting Polystyrene microspheres in the superior mesenteric vein, we demonstrated that the presence of adult schistosomes in the lungs of R. rattus was not due to an innate anomaly of the rat vasculature but resulted from the formation of portacaval shunts during infection. In rats harbouring a bisexual infection, microspheres were only detected in the lungs from week 7. The development and increasing size of the shunts were maximal between weeks 7 and 10 and coincident with the translocation of adult worms from the portal tract to the lungs. At weeks 20–25, only 1–2% of the microspheres were recovered from the lungs, suggesting that the portacaval anastomoses have regressed due to reduction in portal hypertension after worm translocation. R. rattus with a male-only schistosome infection harboured adult worms in the lungs, indicating that the development of shunts does not solely depend upon egg deposition in the liver to generate hypertension. The relationships between the presence of the schistosomes in the lungs, the portacaval shunting and the resistance to reinfection is discussed

Colors of Life and Optoelectronics: Zinc Porphyrins for Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells and Organic Photodetectors

    Get PDF
The field of organic optoelectronics constitutes an interdisciplinary field that covers chemistry, physics, materials science and biology. The technological promises of the organic materials over their inorganic counterparts include a lower production cost and the feasibility to be processed through solution-based techniques on large-area and/or flexible substrates. Among organic optoelectronic devices, two technologies are discussed in this thesis. Those are light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) and photomultiplication (PM) type organic photodetectors (OPDs). The LEC is a light emitting technology that has attracted a lot of scientific interest due to its simple device architecture and fabrication. A category of LECs that is of high interest, are those LECs consisting of materials emitting near-infrared (NIR) light. This specific field is highly alluring, due to the unique applications NIR light can generate in a wide range of fields from medicine to optical communications. However, organic NIR emitters are inherently of lower efficiency when compared to other wavelengths, thus posing a challenge in material design. Hereof, an attempt was made in the context of this work to design and synthesize emitters that will produce light in the deep NIR region and in a functional LEC. The problem of high aggregation of NIR emitters was tackled by blending with appropriate host materials. On the other side, PM type OPDs aim in sensing and not in the production of light. The characteristic of this special category of OPDs is the possibility of enhancing the received weak signal without the need of external components in the device, like photomultiplier tubes. However, since this specific field is not mature yet, there is not adequate knowledge in material design. Thus, there is a need in discovering the materials that will lead to photomultiplication enabling the construction of more efficient devices in the future. In order to achieve all the accomplishments that will be discussed in this thesis, there was a category of molecules that was the heart of all studies. These molecules, often called as colors of life, due to their importance in many processes occurring in nature were porphyrins. Porphyrins are highly versatile motifs and were the tools that led both into production of deep NIR light but also into improving the detection of weak light

Start-up marketing: how to become a player on the B2B services market in Romania

    Get PDF
The Romanian B2B services market tends to be more and more mature, as new players enter the country as a consequence of Romania’s membership within the European Union. Therefore, it becomes more and more difficult for new and small businesses to be set up and become functional players on this market. In this context, it is worthwhile performing marketing efforts from a special perspective that is a start-up marketing approach. The paper presents an analysis of start-up marketing as a discipline and also as practice in the B2B services market in Romania.start-up marketing, B2B services, Romania.

The Influence of Slavery on the Black Body: Black Lives Matter’s Intersectional Methodology and New Advancements

Racial discrimination has been a significant problem in the United States. For centuries, African Americans have endured and resisted (in multiple ways) a system of bondage, a system where they faced political, economic, institutional, and social oppression. It is a system that condoned the violence that often resulted in the innocent deaths of Black bodies since the beginning of slavery. As property, the Black body was viewed and used as a commodity; thus the dehumanization of Black bodies was justified. The history of slavery demonstrates the different ways Black bodies have been and continue to be hindered by its effects. To know our history is to understand our present day. Therefore, believing slavery is irrelevant to the positionality of African Americans today, keeps them in a constant state of danger, ridicule, and exclusion. Given this fact, when we look at the current ways state violence against Black bodies occurs, can it be linked to slavery? And if so, how can we make these connections? By looking at the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) and the current events that led to its establishment, this project seeks to investigate the perpetuation of state violence towards Black bodies today in comparison to the policing of Black bodies during slavery. Making these connections creates a clearer understanding of the continuity of racial discrimination and the negative impact it has on Black liberation. Additionally, using an intersectional lens, this project will explore the BLM movement\u27s intersectional advances while comparing them to previous social and civil rights movements to stress the need for intersectionality. In turn, this project reveals the dangers of dismissing the historical relevance of slavery and how it continues to affect the liberation of African Americans. Moreover, it will show the dangers of not adopting an intersectional framework. In my attempts to explicitly say and show these comparisons, will demonstrate how the false ideologies of Black bodies established during slavery, endangers the lives of African American’s today
