    Get PDF
Rare earth intermetallic compounds RX and RX_2 ( R=Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er : X=Ag and Au) are antiferromagnetic compounds with the CsCl-type crystal structure and the MoSi_2-type one, respectively. Magnetization process is investigated for these compounds under static magnetic fields up to 270 kOe and pulsed ones up to 300 kOe. The observed field induced transitions are reviewed together with their magnetic phase diagrams

    Get PDF
Background/ Aim: The common radiation dose administered with chemoradiotherapy for stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is 60 Gy. We aimed to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of carboplatin-paclitaxel chemoradiotherapy with 66 Gy for elderly NSCLC patients. Patients and Methods: Forty-five patients with stage III NSCLC were enrolled from 2011 to 2014 at our hospital. They were divided into three groups according to their status and underwent different treatments. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and local control (LC) were determined. Toxicity was evaluated with NCI-CTCAE ver. 4.0; intergroup differences were analysed statistically. Results: The group receiving carboplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy with 66 Gy showed the longest median OS (40.4 months), PFS (17.9 months), and LC (44.3 months). Toxicity was acceptable in all groups. Conclusion: For elderly patients with stage III NSCLC, carboplatin-paclitaxel chemoradiotherapy with 66 Gy is suggested to be feasible and effective

A NIN-LIKE PROTEIN mediates nitrate-induced control of root nodule symbiosis in Lotus japonicus

    Get PDF
Legumes and rhizobia establish symbiosis in root nodules. To balance the gains and costs associated with the symbiosis, plants have developed two strategies for adapting to nitrogen availability in the soil: plants can regulate nodule number and/or stop the development or function of nodules. Although the former is accounted for by autoregulation of nodulation, a form of systemic long-range signaling, the latter strategy remains largely enigmatic. Here, we show that the Lotus japonicus NITRATE UNRESPONSIVE SYMBIOSIS 1 (NRSYM1) gene encoding a NIN-LIKE PROTEIN transcription factor acts as a key regulator in the nitrate-induced pleiotropic control of root nodule symbiosis. NRSYM1 accumulates in the nucleus in response to nitrate and directly regulates the production of CLE-RS2, a root-derived mobile peptide that acts as a negative regulator of nodule number. Our data provide the genetic basis for how plants respond to the nitrogen environment and control symbiosis to achieve proper plant growth

Trastuzumab-Based Combination Chemotherapy in Patients with Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2-Positive Metastatic Carcinoma ex Pleomorphic Adenoma

Background: Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare histologic subtype of lacrimal gland and submandibular gland cancer. Currently, there is no standard treatment for metastatic CXPA, although some case reports have explored the role of targeted agents in chemotherapy. A few histopathologic analyses have shown that some of these tumors overexpress human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), suggesting a potential role for HER2-based therapy. We report here two cases of metastatic CXPA that were treated with trastuzumab-based chemotherapy (IRB approved) with rapid and significant responses. Case Report 1: A 66-year-old male was diagnosed as HER2-positive CXPA of the right lacrimal gland with multiple bone and lymph node metastases. Combination chemotherapy with trastuzumab (Tmab) and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nabPTX) was initiated. A rapid response was confirmed, and after seven cycles of treatment, CR(complete response) was achieved. Case Report 2: A 67-year-old female was diagnosed with HER2 positive CXPA of the right submandibular gland. Multiple pulmonary metastatic lesions were detected after surgery, and combination chemotherapy with Tmab and nab-PTX was initiated. A rapid partial response (PR) was confirmed, and she eventually became disease-free. Conclusion: In the absence of definitive clinical trials, which are unlikely to be performed due to the rarity of HER2-positive CXPA, therapeutic information must be obtained from case reports. Some reports, such as this one, have suggested a potential utility of trastuzumab-based chemotherapy

Targeting Notch-1 positive acute leukemia cells by novel fucose-bound liposomes carrying daunorubicin

Complete remission by induction therapy in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) can be achieved due to improvements in supportive and optimized therapy. However, more than 20% of patients will still need to undergo salvage therapy, and most will have a poor prognosis. Determining the specificity of drugs to leukemia cells is important since this will maximize the dose of chemotherapeutic agents that can be administered to AML patients. In turn, this would be expected to lead to reduced drug toxicity and its increased efficacy. We targeted Notch-1 positive AML cells utilizing fucose-bound liposomes, since activation of Notch-1 is required for O-fucosylation. Herein, we report that intravenously injected, L-fucose-bound liposomes containing daunorubicin can be successfully delivered to AML cells that express fucosylated antigens. This resulted in efficient tumor growth inhibition in tumor-bearing mice and decreased proliferation of AML patient-derived leukemia cells. Thus, biological targeting by fucose-bound liposomes that takes advantage of the intrinsic characteristics of AML cells could be a promising new strategy for Notch-1 positive-AML treatment

he Large Helical Device (LHD) has been extending an operational regime of net-current free plasmas towardsthe fusion relevant condition with taking advantage of a net current-free heliotron concept and employing a superconducting coil system. Heating capability has exceeded 10 MW and the central ion and electron temperatureshave reached 7 and 10 keV, respectively. The maximum value of β and pulse length have been extended to 3.2% and 150 s, respectively. Many encouraging physical findings have been obtained. Topics from recent experiments, which should be emphasized from the aspect of theoretical approaches, are reviewed. Those are (1) Prominent features in the inward shifted configuration, i.e., mitigation of an ideal interchange mode in the configuration with magnetic hill, and confinement improvement due to suppression of both anomalous and neoclassical transport, (2) Demonstration ofbifurcation of radial electric field and associated formation of an internal transport barrier, and (3) Dynamics of magnetic islands and clarification of the role of separatrix

Trans-synaptic interaction of GluRdelta2 and Neurexin through Cbln1 mediates synapse formation in the cerebellum

    Get PDF
SummaryElucidation of molecular mechanisms that regulate synapse formation is required for the understanding of neural wiring, higher brain functions, and mental disorders. Despite the wealth of in vitro information, fundamental questions about how glutamatergic synapses are formed in the mammalian brain remain unanswered. Glutamate receptor (GluR) δ2 is essential for cerebellar synapse formation in vivo. Here, we show that the N-terminal domain (NTD) of GluRδ2 interacts with presynaptic neurexins (NRXNs) through cerebellin 1 precursor protein (Cbln1). The synaptogenic activity of GluRδ2 is abolished in cerebellar primary cultures from Cbln1 knockout mice and is restored by recombinant Cbln1. Knockdown of NRXNs in cerebellar granule cells also hinders the synaptogenic activity of GluRδ2. Both the NTD of GluRδ2 and the extracellular domain of NRXN1β suppressed the synaptogenic activity of Cbln1 in cerebellar primary cultures and in vivo. These results suggest that GluRδ2 mediates cerebellar synapse formation by interacting with presynaptic NRXNs through Cbln1
