    Optimizing Tracking Software for a Time Projection Chamber

    International research collaborations will be using accelerators in the U.S. and Europe to produce and detect t5 phase transition in high-density nuclear matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma, formed in collisions between pairs of A=200 nuclei, for projectiles with kinetic energies large compared to their rest mass energies. Each collaboration will use time projection chambers (TPC) to track thousands ofsecondary charged particles formed in the aftermath ofeach central primary collision. Creating and optimizing TPC tracking software is difficultinsuch a high multiplicity environment, particularly for particles with a low momentum (below 300 MeV/C). A thigh momenta, energy loss is low enough for particle-tracking to use unchanging helix parameters. However, at low momenta, tracking requires changing helix parameters as energy is lost along the path. Tracking software, written for particles of high momenta, may identify the track of a single low momentum particle as two or three separate tracks. This tracking problem was corrected by changing the main tracking algorithm to merge together these two-or-three fragmented, low-momentum particle tracks. Event displays were found exceedingly helpful in diagnosing the problems and optimizing the algorithms

    Dose-finding study of a 90-day contraceptive vaginal ring releasing estradiol and segesterone acetate.

    ObjectiveTo evaluate serum estradiol (E2) concentrations during use of 90-day contraceptive vaginal rings releasing E2 75, 100, or 200 mcg/day and segesterone acetate (SA) 200 mcg/day to identify a dose that avoids hypoestrogenism.Study designWe conducted a multicenter dose-finding study in healthy, reproductive-aged women with regular cycles with sequential enrollment to increasing E2 dose groups. We evaluated serum E2 concentrations twice weekly for the primary outcome of median E2 concentrations throughout initial 30-day use (target ≥40 pg/mL). In an optional 2-cycle extension substudy, we randomized participants to 2- or 4-day ring-free intervals per 30-day cycle to evaluate bleeding and spotting based on daily diary information.ResultsSixty-five participants enrolled in E2 75 (n = 22), 100 (n = 21), and 200 (n = 22) mcg/day groups; 35 participated in the substudy. Median serum E2 concentrations in 75 and 100 mcg/day groups were <40 pg/mL. In the 200 mcg/day group, median E2 concentrations peaked on days 4-5 of CVR use at 194 pg/mL (range 114-312 pg/mL) and remained >40 pg/mL throughout 30 days; E2 concentrations were 37 pg/mL (range 28-62 pg/mL) on days 88-90 (n = 11). Among the E2 200 mcg/day substudy participants, all had withdrawal bleeding following ring removal. The 2-day ring-free interval group reported zero median unscheduled bleeding and two (range 0-16) and three (range 0-19) unscheduled spotting days in extension cycles 1 and 2, respectively. The 4-day ring-free interval group reported zero median unscheduled bleeding or spotting days.ConclusionsEstradiol concentrations with rings releasing E2 200 mcg/day and SA 200 mcg/day avoid hypoestrogenism over 30-day use.ImplicationsA 90-day contraceptive vaginal ring releasing estradiol 200 mcg/day and segesterone acetate 200 mcg/day achieves estradiol concentrations that should avoid hypoestrogenism and effectively suppresses ovulation

    Time course of the interaction between tadalafil and nitrates

    AbstractObjectivesThis study was designed to determine the time course of nitrate interaction with tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor with a half-life (t1/2) of 17.5 h.BackgroundThe PDE5 inhibitors augment the blood pressure (BP)-lowering effects of nitrates, yet the time course of this interaction is unclear. Recent guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association recommend that nitrates be withheld for 24 h after taking sildenafil (t1/2= 4 h).MethodsMale subjects (n = 150) received seven consecutive daily doses of placebo or tadalafil (20 mg). On day 7 and beyond, subjects received repeated doses of sublingual nitroglycerin (0.4 mg) after the last dose of placebo or tadalafil. After a 10- to 21-day washout period, subjects crossed over to either placebo or tadalafil, and nitrate dosing was repeated.ResultsIn response to nitroglycerin at 4, 8, and 24 h, standing systolic BP fell below 85 mm Hg in more subjects on tadalafil compared with placebo (p < 0.05), with no difference in the response to nitroglycerin at 48, 72, and 96 h (p > 0.2). Similar observations were made for standing diastolic BP <45 mm Hg, decrease in systolic BP >30 mm Hg, and decrease in diastolic BP >20 mm Hg. Nitroglycerin also evoked greater mean maximal decreases in standing systolic BP at 8 and 24 h after taking tadalafil versus placebo (p < 0.02), with no significant difference at 48, 72, or 96 h (p > 0.49).ConclusionsThe hemodynamic interaction between tadalafil and sublingual nitroglycerin lasted 24 h, but was not seen at 48 h and beyond. Similar to other PDE5 inhibitors, tadalafil should not be administered in combination with organic nitrates

    Tropical sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass are known to be efficient scavengers of soil nitrogen and are important forage crops in the U.S. Nitrate contamination of groundwater due to disposal of organic wastes and excessive fertilization is a major concern in the Central Great Plains. A common disposal method of municipal wastes is application to fallow cropland. Quantification of the developmental morphology of tropical sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass is important to developing management strategies that allow multiple applications of organic wastes to optimize nitrogen removal and dry matter production. The objective of this study was to quantify the developmental morphology of tropical sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass irrigated at levels approximating transpiration and evaporative demand. Tropical sorghum mean stage by count (MSC) was 33% lower than MSC for sorghum x sudangrass in September. Leaf-to-stem ratio was greater for tropical sorghum than sorghum x sudangrass throughout most of the growing season. Dry matter per plant was as much as 30% greater for sorghum x sudangrass, although values were nearly equal at the end of the growing season
