Slow Moving Capital

We study three cases in which specialized arbitrageurs lost significant amounts of capital and, as a result, became liquidity demanders rather than providers. The effects on security markets were large and persistent: Prices dropped relative to fundamentals and the rebound took months. While multi-strategy hedge funds who were not capital constrained increased their positions, a large fraction of these funds actually acted as net sellers consistent with the view that information barriers within a firm (not just relative to outside investors) can lead to capital constraints for trading desks with mark-to-market losses. Our findings suggest that real world frictions impede arbitrage capital.

Binding and Detection of Anions Using Tripodal Hosts

The aim of this project was to investigate the anion-binding properties of a range of different receptor compounds. For the most part, the receptors reported here were tripodal in nature, wherein three hydrogen-bonding receptor groups, including amines, amides and ureas, are linked around a common structural core. In this study, a range of different cores were chosen, such as simple and flexible organic frameworks based on the tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) precursor, conformationally-restricted and brightly coloured aromatic species based on the dye pararosaniline, and triply-ligated metal complexes of ruthenium(II). In order to assess the anion binding abilities of these receptors, a range of different techniques were employed, with 1H-NMR and UV/Visible spectroscopic titrations being the most common. Additionally, the incorporation of fluorescent pyrene moieties as a reporter group to some of the receptors allowed for the probing of anion binding via fluorimetric titrations in these cases. During the course of the experiments, a number of interesting, and in some cases, unexpected, binding conformations were found – in particular, the interactions between many of the organic receptor compounds with the planar 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (trimesylate) trianion, and the pH dependency of the colour of the pararosaniline-based receptors. Additionally, the range of cyclic thioether-capped ruthenium(II) receptor compounds reported here showed an unusually high resistance to degradation by solvent and guest when compared to similar receptors with aromatic-capped ruthenium, and successfully gave tripodal ML3 complexes instead of the traditionally more stable ML2X dipodal complexes

Student Perceptions of Learning Loss Following Traumatic Multi-Event School Closures: A Phenomenolgical Study

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of students who suffered learning loss due to multiple school closures during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years while attending Bay District Schools (BDS) in Bay County, Florida. The theoretical framework utilized in this study was Weiner’s Attribution Theory (AT). Weiner (1974) posited that the pursuit of understanding the motivation of an individual’s behavior requires attributing one or more causes to the behavior. Using attribution, I engaged participants in their personal narratives in order to understand and interpret their experience, motivation, and dimension of behavior regarding the learning loss they may have endured during multiple school closures within the phenomenon. To address the research problem, I identified a purposive criteria sampling of 12 participants who attended BDS schools during the academic years of the phenomenon. The participants were interviewed using a semi-structured, open-ended questions that allow for supplemental questions by the interviewer or elaboration from the participant. Participants also completed a journal guided by qualitative prompts to expound on their experience. Finally, the facilitation of a focus group was conducted using semi-structured question to discuss the emerging themes from the interviews and the journals. The data was transcribed, compiled, and analyzed using Moustakas’ seven step model. The central research question focused on understanding the students’ metaphorical descriptions of learning loss resulting from the school closures of the phenomenon

Student Perceptions of Trivium-Based Education in Classical Christian Schools: A Phenomenological Study

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe the lived experiences of students who graduated from modern classical Christian schools. The theoretical framework utilized is Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (SLT) as it relates to his concept of academic self-efficacy (ASE). Bandura (1986) posited that there are four constructs that serve as predictors in the development of ASE: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological response. To address the research problem, I identified a purposive criteria sampling of 8 participants who graduated from accredited and member ACCS schools having experienced all three components of the trivium. Of the eight participants, five maintained a journal entering qualitative responses that described their respective ACCS school experience. All eight participants were interviewed using semi-structured, open-ended questions that allowed for follow-up discussion and elaboration. Finally, I facilitated a focus group interview with four of the eight participants, which was guided by semi-structured questions designed to elicit discussion on the emerging themes from the interviews and journals. The data was analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) seven step model of transcendental phenomenology. The research resulted in a Kingdom-oriented, composite, metaphorical description of student experiences in trivium-based education within ACCS schools
