Automation of the Continuous Coagulation Monitor
The development of automation in the past 50 years has paralleled the accelerating growth of todayâs vast technological society. Automatic control systems are indispensable extensions of man\u27s brain that enable him to monitor and regulate his complex environment. The principles of automatic control have a wide range of applications and interests in virtually every scientific field. The need for automatic control systems in vital applications of environmental engineering is both real and urgent. Extensive pollution has resulted in unavoidable water re-use and in the inevitable establishment of stringent effluent standards. Both water and wastewater treatment processes have necessarily become more advanced and complicated. Automation can reliably provide the critical, sophisticated control required to maintain adequate treatment. In his pollution abatement or water quality program, the environmental engineer can employ automatic control systems to continuously and accurately monitor contaminant levels or the removal efficiencies of treatment processes and to effect rapid responses when treatment adjustment becomes necessary by automatically adjusting processes
Improving Design Criteria for Septic Tank Systems
The failure of septic tanks in treatment of wastewater has been responsible for causing health hazards due to contamination and pollution of groundwater and surface waters used for drinking water supplies. Most of these failures have been in the absorption field. Little or no actual research has been performed to establish design criteria for septic tank absorption fields to be used by local, state or federal Health Agencies or Pollution Control Agencies. Historically, almost all design criteria has beed based on a percolation test and the number of bedrooms to be served. Both of these methods have repeatedly been shown to have little or no relationship to efficient absorption field performance. This study was conducted to test the theory that failures can be corrected with relatively inexpensive changes in absorption field design. Reported here are the results of an investigation of the septic tank effluent treatment capacity of gravel from local streams. The effluent was percolated through lysimeters containing various depths and sizes of gravel. The gravel was varied as to its physical characteristics, coefficient of uniformity and effective particle size as well as depth and size. The findings may lead to the modification of absorption fields for more efficient waste treatment

With national interest focused on manâs ever increasing degradation of the waters in this nation, it is clearly evident that an accurate assessment of all parameters influencing water quality needs to be made. Moreover, nutrient levels and budgets reflecting eutrophication trends are important parameters in the overall factors effecting water quality in lakes and reservoirs. The ability to predict future eutrophication levels will greatly enhance the retardation of the eutrophication process. Through mathematical simulation of this process, eutrophication can be analyzed and intelligent decisions regarding water quality management can be made
Embedded library services : beyond chance encounters for students from low SES backgrounds
This paper reports research that examined how the embedding of library services through the learning management system contributed to the experience of students from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds. To evaluate the embedded practice, the researchers used a mixed-method approach involving surveys with students and interviews with library and academic staff. Survey results showed gains in students\u27 awareness of library resources and in their confidence and satisfaction using them. Staff participants reported benefits to students from the improved visibility of the library and involvement of students in conversations about information literacy. The teacher derived personal benefits in learning more about digital information resources while library staff benefitted from the research-driven nature of the practice which strengthened their collaborative partnership with academic staff. Based on the evaluation, an embedded approach has been adopted at the university in additional courses which have similar student profiles. The outcomes are relevant more widely in demonstrating both the potential benefits of embedded practice for supporting diverse student populations and how libraries can target their activities more effectively to national and university agendas for improving student outcomes
Racial differences in selfâreported healthcare seeking and treatment for urinary incontinence in communityâdwelling women from the EPI study
Aims Objectives of this study are: (1) to examine the prevalence of healthcare seeking among black and white women with selfâreported urinary incontinence (UI), (2) to investigate barriers to treatment for incontinence, and (3) To investigate commonly used therapeutic modalities for UI. Methods This is a planned secondary analysis of responses from 2,812 black and white communityâdwelling women living in southeastern Michigan, aged 35â64 years, who completed a telephone interview concerning UI, healthcareâseeking behaviors and management strategies. The study population was 571 subjects (278 black, 293 white) who selfâidentified as having urinary incontinence. Results Of these women with UI, 51% sought healthcare with no statistically significant difference between the two races (53% black, 50.6% white, P â=â0.64). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, a higher likelihood of seeking healthcare was associated with increased age, body mass index lower than 30âkg/m 2 , prior surgery for UI, having regular pelvic exams, having a doctor, and worsening severity of UI. There was no significant association between hypothesized barriers to care seeking and race. Almost 95% of the subjects identified lack of knowledge of available treatments as one barrier. Black and white women were similar in percentage use of medications and some selfâcare strategies, for example, pad wearing and bathroom mapping, but black women were significantly more likely to restrict fluid intake than white women and marginally less likely to perform Kegels. Conclusions Black and white women seek healthcare for UI at similar, low rates. Improved patientâdoctor relationships and public education may foster healthcare seeking behavior. Neurourol. Urodynam. Beaver Lake Water Quality Monitoring Plan
The Beaver Lake basin is located in Northwest Arkansas, and includes portions of Washington, Madison, Benton, Carroll and Franklin counties. The White River is the :major tributary to Beaver lake, with minor tributaries including the Middle and West Forks of the Whi 1:e River, Richland Creek and War Eagle Creek. The basin encompassing 1,186 square miles of drainage area provides a usable storage capacity of 1.22 :million acre-feet, 300,000 of which are designated as flood control, the remainder is utilized for power generation and water supply. Beaver Lake is the water source for both the Beaver and Carroll County Water Districts. Ten recreational facilities hav\u27e been developed around the lake by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE)
Balancing risk, intimacy and (non)compliance: a qualitative study of sex across household during COVID-19 social restrictions
Government controls over intimate relationships, imposed to limit the spread of Sars-CoV-2, were unprecedented in modern times. This study draws on data from qualitative interviews with 18 participants in Natsal-COVID, a quasi-representative web-panel survey of the British population (nâ=â6,654 people), reporting that they had sex with someone from outside their household in the preceding four weeks; a period in which contact between households was restricted in the UK. Whilst only 10% of people reported sexual contact outside their household, among single people and those in non-cohabiting relationships, rates were much higher (Natsal-COVID). Our findings show that individuals did not take decisions to meet up with sexual partners lightly. Participants were motivated by needs-for connection, security, intimacy and a sense of normality. People balanced risks-of catching COVID-19, social judgement and punishment for rule-breaking-against other perceived risks, including to their mental health or relationships. We used situated rationality and social action theories of risk to demonstrate that people weighed up risk in socially situated ways and exhibited complex decision-making when deciding not to comply with restrictions. Understanding motivations for non-compliance is crucial to informing future public health messaging which accounts for the needs and circumstances of all population members

Multi-satellite observed responses of precipitation and its extremes to interannual climate variability
The consistency of precipitation variability estimated from the multiple satellite-based observing systems is assessed. There is generally good agreement between TRMM TMI, SSM/I, GPCP and AMSRE datasets for the inter-annual variability of precipitation since 1997 but the HOAPS dataset appears to overestimate the magnitude of variability. Over the tropical ocean the TRMM 3B42 dataset produces unrealistic variabilitys. Based upon deseasonalised GPCP data for the period 1998-2008, the sensitivity of global mean precipitation (P) to surface temperature (T) changes (dP/dT) is about 6%/K, although a smaller sensitivity of 3.6%/K is found using monthly GPCP data over the longer period 1989-2008. Over the tropical oceans dP/dT ranges from 10-30%/K depending upon time-period and dataset while over tropical land dP/dT is -8 to -11%/K for the 1998-2008 period. Analyzing the response of the tropical ocean precipitation intensity distribution to changes in T we find the wetter area P shows a strong positive response to T of around 20%/K. The response over the drier tropical regimes is less coherent and varies with datasets, but responses over the tropical land show significant negative relationships over an interannual time-scale. The spatial and temporal resolutions of the datasets strongly influence the precipitation responses over the tropical oceans and help explain some of the discrepancy between different datasets. Consistency between datasets is found to increase on averaging from daily to 5-day time-scales and considering a 1o (or coarser) spatial resolution. Defining the wet and dry tropical ocean regime by the 60th percentile of P intensity, the 5-day average, 1o TMI data exhibits a coherent drying of the dry regime at the rate of -20%/K and the wet regime becomes wetter at a similar rate with warming

The 2010-2011 drought in the Horn of Africa in ECMWF reanalysis and seasonal forecast products
This study evaluates the use of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) products in monitoring and forecasting drought conditions during the recent 2010â2011 drought in the Horn of Africa (HoA). The region was affected by a precipitation deficit in both the OctoberâDecember 2010 and MarchâMay 2011 rainy seasons. These anomalies were captured by the ERA-Interim reanalysis (ERAI), despite its limitations in representing the MarchâMay interannual variability. Soil moisture anomalies of ERAI also identified the onset of the drought condition early in October 2010 with a persistent drought still present in September 2011. This signal was also evident in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) remote sensing data. The precipitation deficit in OctoberâDecember 2010 was associated with a strong La Niña event. The ECMWF seasonal forecasts for the OctoberâDecember 2010 season predicted the La Niña event from June 2010 onwards. The forecasts also predicted a below-average OctoberâDecember rainfall, from July 2010 onwards. The subsequent MarchâMay rainfall anomaly was only captured by the new ECWMF seasonal forecast system in the forecasts starting in March 2011. Our analysis shows that a recent (since 1999) drying in the region during the MarchâMay season is captured by the new ECMWF seasonal forecast system and is consistent with recently published results. The HoA region and its population are highly vulnerable to future droughts, thus global monitoring and forecasting of drought, such as that presented here, will become increasingly important in the future.
