Devidend announcements and contagion effects: an investigation on the firm listed with Dhaka Stock Exchange

    Get PDF
Changes in dividend convey information about the earnings of the announcing firm which in turn affect the price. Security price depends on current earnings, past earnings, and future prospect of earnings. Dividend relevant theory postulates that dividend policy, dividend initiation and changes in dividend carry information about the market value of the announcing firms. Accordingly, an unexpected increase in dividends conveys positive information about the future profitability of the firm and vice versa. Firm’s management is better informed than the market about the future prospects of their firm and therefore, their action relating to any financing decision conveys information to the investors. The principal purpose of this study was to examine the intra-industry information effects of announcements of dividend initiations of the firms associated with Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). To test this hypothesis, we used Herfindahl Index and Tobin’s q ratio. The study found that the intra-industry effects of dividend revisions are apparent

Generalized height-diameter models for Populus tremula L. stands

Using permanent sample plot data, selected tree height and diameter functions were evaluated for their predictive abilities for Populus tremula stands in Turkey. Two sets of models were evaluated. The first set included five models for estimating height as a function of individual tree diameter; the second set also included six models for estimating height as a function of individual tree diameter and some standlevel- attributes. The inclusion of the stand-level-attributes (basal area, dominant height, dominant diameter, number of trees) and BAL index (which simultaneously indicates the relative position of a tree and stand density) into the base height-diameter models increased the accuracy of prediction for P.tremula. As a result, the second set models gave high performance than the first models. On average, by including stand level attributes, root mean square values were reduced by 21 cm. In the second set, the best results were obtained by the Schnute’s function. In this function, dominant diameter and dominant height independent variables in addition to tree diameter were found significant at 0.01 significant level (R2= 0.949, 1.226 . = y x S , P < 0.01). Root mean square was reduced 35 cm Schnute’sfunction alone. Thus, a generalized height-diameter model based on Schnute’s function was developed for P. tremula L. stands in Turkey. Based on the residual plots and fit statistics, the model can be recommended for estimating tree heights for P. tremula L. in Turkey. The model coefficients are documented for future use

Conditions for Optimality of Singular Controls in Dynamic Systems with Retarded Control

    Get PDF
In this chapter, we consider an optimal control problem with retarded control and study a larger class of singular (in the classical sense) controls. For the optimality of singular controls, the various necessary conditions in the recurrent forms are obtained. These conditions contain also the analogs of Kelly, Koppa-Mayer, Gabasov, and equality-type conditions. While proving the main results, the Legendre polynomials are used as variations of control

POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS) – PILOT STUDY ON DIET QUALITY

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex gynecological and endocrinological disorder affecting 6% to 21% of reproductive age women. The main characteristics of PCOS include hyperandrogenism, irregular menstrual cycles, lack of ovulation, enlarged ovaries with numerous cysts and infertility. Symptoms vary widely between women, but most commonly include obesity, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance (approximately 65% to 70% of women with PCOS). Therefore, uniform therapy and dietary recommendations fail. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of diet and dietary patterns of women with PCOS. Actual lifestyle habits and the diet of the women with PCOS have not been extensively researched internationally and never in Croatia. Methods: The study included women of reproductive age diagnosed with PCOS (N=12), recruited at the Gynecological Office Lončar, Karlovac, Croatia. Study participants completed a general questionnaire on socio-economic characteristics and two questionnaires regarding their gynecological health and PCOS symptoms. Anthropometry was measured (Seca) while biochemical data was provided by the gynecologist. Diet quality was assessed with a 24-hour dietary recall and quality of diet and exercise habits were assessed with a questionnaire developed specifically for this study. Results: Women with PCOS had an average daily energy intake of 82.3% of the RDA, i.e. 2333 kcal/day. When analyzing the contribution of separate macronutrients to that daily energy intake, discrepancies from the recommendations were found. The main discrepancies are high contribution of fats (40.1%) and increased intake of proteins (17.7%). Total fat intake showed a statistically significant positive correlation with waist circumference and waist to hips ratio. In addition, a statistically significant correlation was found between age and intake of total carbohydrates and plant proteins. Conclusion: Study findings show the potential for a larger-scale study on Croatian women with PCOS

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of new Thiazole-2(3H)-thiones containing 1, 1, 3-trisubstituted Cyclobutane

The reaction of potassium salts of RNHCSSK with 2-chloro-1-(3-methyl-3-phenylcyclobutyl)ethan-1-one in ethanol at 78-80°C afforded new 1, 3-thiazole-2(3H)-thiones containing 1, 1, 3-trisubstituted cyclobutane rings at C-4. The antimicrobial activities of these compounds were also investigated against seven different microorganisms, and some of them were found to be active against several of the microorganisms at higher concentrations. Literary Translation

The focus of this thesis is the translation of literary works from Croatian to English language. In this paper, I will address the differences which are present during the process of translation of literature and present my own views on how to tackle the immensely complicated problems which often appear while translating certain pieces of literature. The first two texts are short stories published during the 20th century. I have purposely chosen those two stories, seeing as how one had been published in 1905, and the other in 1960, to explore the differences, not only within the lines of the style of writing, but also to show the differences in the use of vocabulary which can be quite troublesome for translators, and that the vocabulary greatly depends on the time when the story was published. The third text is a prose poem, while the fourth text is a free verse poem. Following the translation of the chosen texts, I will provide a commentary and the analysis of each text in which I will give out information on the author, the style of writing, and ultimately present the reasons why I chose to translate certain parts of those texts the way I did. Since every translator has the right to produce their own unique vision of a certain translation I believe that the commentary chapters of this work will prove to be the most valuable as I will present my own thought processes which enabled me to come up with the translated literary work. I believe it is necessary to mention that the commentary and analysis part will not contain reasons for every specific word or phrase, but only for the parts which have proven troublesome to translate into the target language for whatever reason. Following the final commentary chapter, this thesis will include a conclusion which will summarize the main features of the process of translation
