    Evaluating sustainable intensification and diversification options for agriculture-based livelihoods within an aquatic biodiversity conservation context in Buxa, West Bengal, India

    Potential impacts of sustainable intensification and diversification options for agriculture-based livelihoods in Buxa, West Bengal, India were evaluated using bioeconomic modelling. The baseline scenario involved multiple cropping seasons and a combination of crops on 0.9 ha landholdings, livestock husbandry, and exploitation of common property resources. With capital costs of Rs. 128,180 (US2293)andannualoperatingcostsofRs.37,290(US 2293) and annual operating costs of Rs. 37,290 (US 667), the net benefit generated (excluding depreciation) was Rs. 70,250 (US1257)annually.Thepaybackperiodwas1.8years,andtheInternalRateofReturn(IRR)was53.7 1257) annually. The pay-back period was 1.8 years, and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) was 53.7% over 10 years. Allocation of 20 days annually to fishing increased the net benefit to Rs. 75,030 (US 1,342) and IRR to 56.5% with minimal added costs and risks. Adopting the system of rice intensification (SRI) for paddy cultivation on 0.35 ha increased the IRR to 61.1%, while reducing agrochemical and inorganic fertiliser use. Including small-scale fish culture in a 0.1 ha pond integrated in the irrigation scheme for SRI cultivation resulted in an IRR of 77.3% and reduced the pay-back period to 1.3 years. Some risks to biodiversity are apparent with each scenario; however, with appropriate safeguards, sustainable agricultural intensification and livelihoods diversification could bolster agrobiodiversity and social-ecological resilience of highland communities, while alleviating pressure on biodiversity

    Nonlinear Strong Coupling by Second-Harmonic Generation Enhancement in Plasmonic Nanopatch Antennas

    Enhanced electromagnetic fields within plasmonic nanocavity mode volumes enable multiple significant effects that lead to applications in both the linear and nonlinear optical regimes. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced second harmonic generation from individual plasmonic nanopatch antennas which are formed by separating silver nanocubes from a smooth gold film using a sub-10 nm zinc oxide spacer layer. When the nanopatch antennas are excited at their fundamental plasmon frequency, a 104-fold increase in the intensity of the second harmonic generation wave is observed. Moreover, by integrating quantum emitters that have an absorption energy at the fundamental frequency, a second order nonlinear exciton - polariton strong coupling response is observed with a Rabi splitting energy of 19 meV. The nonlinear frequency conversion using nanopatch antennas thus provides an excellent platform for nonlinear control of the light-matter interactions in both weak and strong coupling regimes which will have a great potential for applications in optical engineering and information processing

    Effect of covering by black polythene sheet and coal powder on nearby surfaces of sand bed solar still: Studying heat and mass transfer

Solar stills have long been used as an easy-to-operate and popular water production unit. In present work, the real situation near the seashores where wet sand is available in abundance with brackish water is being simulated and experiments were conducted. The experimental results are helpful for the coastal area where there is abundance of saline water but lack of potable water. The two experimental arrangements were compared for the heat and mass transfer within the single slope solar still and the yield in the month of March at Raipur (Latitude 21.16N and longitude 81.42 E) India. It has been observed that the daily distillation yield is more in second case where surrounding mass of sand has been converted as heat storage that enhances heat and mass transfer. The wet sand top surface temperature that resembles the water temperature of solar still of both arrangements increases slowly as the sun rises up and reaches to its maximum at 1:30 pm of 1st as well as 2nd day by rise of 231 % and 125% more with comparison to morning temperature respectively for solar still S-1. The same water temperature for solar still S-2 also reaches to its maximum at same time 1:30 pm of 1st as well as 2nd day by rise of 234 % and 139 % respectively. It has been observed that the second solar still S-2 remains always ahead as for as yield is concerned. Finally in two days of observation the second still gives 12.20% more yield (6.205 litres in comparison to5.530 litres) per m2 basin area in 48 hours of the basin in comparison to the first solar still S-1 under consideration. This yield can be increased significantly by increasing the area of the basin. One more interesting conclusion is the fact that in still wet sand nearly behaves as a free water surface.dc201

Manual work, which constitutes a large proportion of total construction in India and developing countries, requires emphasis. Field data-based mathematical simulations develop an empirical relation between inputs and outputs; once the model is developed and weaknesses have been identified, methods can be easily improved and optimised for output goals. This paper covers in detail the process of developing models for the rebar cutting subactivity of reinforced concrete construction in residential buildings. These models are evaluated using sensitivity analysis, optimisation techniques and reliability analysis and are validated using artificial neural networks

    Background: In the present study, “Diabegon” a poly-herbal preparation, with hypoglycemic activity, was evaluated for its preventive effect in metabolic syndrome subjects with type 2 diabetes and also to reveal its side effects, on liver and kidney. Materials and Methods: Type 2 diabetic subjects with metabolic syndrome (N=58) were categorized on the basis of age and fasting blood glucose. The grouping was as follows: Group I (35-50 yrs), Group II (51-65 yrs), Group III >65 yrs, Group IV FBS145. Each group was administered 4 gm of diabegon daily. Blood glucose levels, lipid profile, liver and kidney function of the subjects were regularly monitored within 3 months of interval to 18 months.     The endowment effect, predicted by prospect theory, is a robust finding in behavioral decision theory. Extending recent examinations of the underlying processes, we present evidence for differential perceptions of the traded item, with sellers focusing more on positive features and less on negative features, relative to buyers. In experiment 1, sellers and buyers access information of differing valence in a free recall task. Experiment 2 utilizes error rates and response latencies to demonstrate systematic, and differing, patterns of errors and biases in reactions to valenced stimuli.     Seeing Through the Heart's Eye: The Interference of System 1 in System 2

    Dual process models conceptualize two systems of processing that are activated when presented with a decision task, the quick and affective System 1 and the deliberative and rule-based System 2. In this article, we explore whether the affective component of System 1 has the potential to interfere with the information integration component of System 2 by utilizing everyday consumer decision-making situations that require the integration of provided information to make optimal choices. We posit that if the provided information has an affective System 1 element, then the affective reaction serves as an input to the System 2 process of information integration. Such an affective input has the potential to cause improper information integration resulting in a biased mental representation, which in turn leads to suboptimal choices. Across three experiments, we test the interfering role of affect in information integration. Experiment 1 establishes the mediating role of the affective System 1 generating a preference for the suboptimal option and rules out the alternate account of analytical skills.
