VIRIS: A Visual-Infrared Imaging System for the Lick Observatory 1-M Telescope
We describe a system in use at the Lick Observatory 1-m Nickel telescope for
near-simultaneous imaging at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. The
combined availability of a CCD and a NICMOS-3 camera makes the system
well-suited for photometric monitoring from 0.5-2.2 microns of a variety of
astrophysical objects. Our science program thus far has concentrated on
studying variability trends in young stellar objects.Comment: 11 pages LaTex, 3 Postscript figure, Pub. Astr. Soc. Pac. 1998, in

Low-Cost, Portable, Multi-Wall Virtual Reality
Virtual reality systems make compelling outreach displays, but some such systems, like the CAVE, have design features that make their use for that purpose inconvenient. In the case of the CAVE, the equipment is difficult to disassemble, transport, and reassemble, and typically CAVEs can only be afforded by large-budget research facilities. We implemented a system like the CAVE that costs less than $30,000, weighs about 500 pounds, and fits into a fifteen-passenger van. A team of six people have unpacked, assembled, and calibrated the system in less than two hours. This cost reduction versus similar virtual-reality systems stems from the unique approach we took to stereoscopic projection. We used an assembly of optical chopper wheels and commodity LCD projectors to create true active stereo at less than a fifth of the cost of comparable active-stereo technologies. The screen and frame design also optimized portability; the frame assembles in minutes with only two fasteners, and both it and the screen pack into small bundles for easy and secure shipment

Successful Surgical Treatment of a Patient with a Solitary Asymptomatic Cardiac Metastasis from Breast Cancer, Identified by Elevated Tumor Markers and Circulating Tumor Cells
Indroduction: Cardiac metastases are a not infrequent autopsy finding in patients dying of metastatic cancer, but are less commonly diagnosed during life (1). Although the autopsy incidence of cardiac metastases ranges may be as high as 25%, solitary cardiac metastases in the absence of metastatic involvement of other organs are rare (2).Case Presentation: We report here the case of a 66-year old woman with a history of bilateral breast cancer, where a solitary metastasis in the right atrium was successfully resected. Conclusion: In the absence of any symptoms or clinical findings on physical examination, the presence of metastatic disease was first suggested by the detection of elevated tumor markers and circulating tumor cells during routine follow up after treatment for early stage breast cancer.
The Beta Problem: A Study of Abell 262
We present an investigation of the dynamical state of the cluster A262.
Existing optical line of sight velocities for select cluster galaxies have been
augmented by new data obtained with the Automated Multi-Object Spectrograph at
Lick Observatory. We find evidence for a virialized early-type population
distinct from a late-type population infalling from the Pisces-Perseus
supercluster ridge. We also report on a tertiary population of low luminosity
galaxies whose velocity dispersion distinguishes them from both the early and
late-type galaxies. We supplement our investigation with an analysis of
archival X-ray data. A temperature is determined using ASCA GIS data and a gas
profile is derived from ROSAT HRI data. The increased statistics of our sample
results in a picture of A262 with significant differences from earlier work. A
previously proposed solution to the "beta-problem" in A262 in which the gas
temperature is significantly higher than the galaxy temperature is shown to
result from using too low a velocity dispersion for the early-type galaxies.
Our data present a consistent picture of A262 in which there is no
"beta-problem", and the gas and galaxy temperature are roughly comparable.
There is no longer any requirement for extensive galaxy-gas feedback to
drastically overheat the gas with respect to the galaxies. We also demonstrate
that entropy-floor models can explain the recent discovery that the beta values
determined by cluster gas and the cluster core radii are correlated.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures, AAS LaTeX v5.0, Encapsulated Postscript

Survival of dental implants in patients with oral cancer treated by surgery and radiotherapy: a retrospective study
BACKGROUND:
The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the survival of dental implants placed after ablative surgery, in patients affected by oral cancer treated with or without radiotherapy.
METHODS:
We collected data for 34 subjects (22 females, 12 males; mean age: 51 ± 19) with malignant oral tumors who had been treated with ablative surgery and received dental implant rehabilitation between 2007 and 2012. Postoperative radiation therapy (less than 50 Gy) was delivered before implant placement in 12 patients. A total of 144 titanium implants were placed, at a minimum interval of 12 months, in irradiated and non-irradiated residual bone.
RESULTS:
Implant loss was dependent on the position and location of the implants (P = 0.05-0.1). Moreover, implant survival was dependent on whether the patient had received radiotherapy. This result was highly statistically significant (P < 0.01). Whether the implant was loaded is another highly significant (P < 0.01) factor determinin
The felon, the faithful and the fighter: the Ppotean face of the chivalric man (javanmard) in the medieval Persianate and modern Iranian worlds
Javanmardi is one of the most significant components in the identity of Persians and those who have lived and live in areas where Persianate culture has been and remains strong. This essay argues that the ethic of javanmardi demonstrates a high level of cultural continuity. The difficulty of defining this concept is partly resolved by relying on seminal texts from the medieval period and referring to important historical figures from early Iranian history. A taxonomy of types, the felon, the faithful and the fighter, are utilised in this article to provide a bricolage of characters who demonstrate that javanmardi is just as important in modern Iran as it was in medieval Persia
