    Get PDF
Join us to learn about how an accidental collaboration turned into an intentionally designed online research log that serves as a direct measure for assessing information literacy outcomes in a freshman level composition class. Using Google Sheets we have created a free CCC licensed research log for use in a synchronous instruction session or paired with digital instructional tutorials in an asynchronous library instruction session. The research log is engaging and intuitive, helps students stay focused on the task and goes beyond the function of a traditional handout to serve as a tool they can use throughout the semester. Also, as a part of the scaffolding strategy for the information literacy program, the research log can be easily adapted for higher level classes to help students in mastering other information literacy skills. The collaborative online research log also allows for both teaching faculty and librarians to monitor student research processes and provide feedback throughout the process. In addition, it provides librarians with real time access to a direct assessment measure for evaluating information literacy outcomes

Calculation And Verification Of Torsional Natural Frequencies For Turbomachinery Equipment Strings

    Get PDF
PaperPg. 151-156.The analytical techniques used to design turbomachinery equipment strings from a torsional dynamics standpoint are discussed. Consideration is also given to both torsional natural frequency placement and potential excitation sources. Three cases are presented wherein the torsional natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated via Holzer Transfer Matrix computer code and the frequencies then verified by measurement on the actual hardware. The accuracy of both analytical and measuring techniques is discussed from the aspect of the minimum acceptable interference margins for acceptable equipment operation

Practical Applications Of Rotordyanmics, Bearing Design, Mechanical Analysis, And Vibration Diagnostics To Design Problems of Rotating Machinery in Operation

    Get PDF
LecturePg. 23-46A large majority of today's existing high performance rotating machinery in operation was manufactured and installed long before the advent of powerful design tools in the complex areas of rotor system dynamics and stability as well as the exacting science of hydrodynamic bearing design. Not having had the advantage of modern automated analysis techniques and their associated technologies, many of today's critical pieces of turbomachinery are experiencing operational difficulties which are symptomatic, not of maintenance related problems, but of basic inadequacy of design. Furthermore, some marginal machines operate satisfactorily until they are rerated, but then require mechanical upgrade. Other problems result from the use of poorly designed aftermarket or OEM parts. Some units can be optimized for future operational reliability while others can be analyzed for rapid solution of potential future problems. Various case histories relevant to design deficiencies of rotating machinery in operation are documented

Lateralization of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with chronic ambulatory electrocorticography

    Get PDF
Objective Patients with suspected mesial temporal lobe (MTL) epilepsy typically undergo inpatient video–electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring with scalp and/or intracranial electrodes for 1 to 2 weeks to localize and lateralize the seizure focus or foci. Chronic ambulatory electrocorticography (ECoG) in patients with MTL epilepsy may provide additional information about seizure lateralization. This analysis describes data obtained from chronic ambulatory ECoG in patients with suspected bilateral MTL epilepsy in order to assess the time required to determine the seizure lateralization and whether this information could influence treatment decisions. Methods Ambulatory ECoG was reviewed in patients with suspected bilateral MTL epilepsy who were among a larger cohort with intractable epilepsy participating in a randomized controlled trial of responsive neurostimulation. Subjects were implanted with bilateral MTL leads and a cranially implanted neurostimulator programmed to detect abnormal interictal and ictal ECoG activity. ECoG data stored by the neurostimulator were reviewed to determine the lateralization of electrographic seizures and the interval of time until independent bilateral MTL electrographic seizures were recorded. Results Eighty-two subjects were implanted with bilateral MTL leads and followed for 4.7 years on average (median 4.9 years). Independent bilateral MTL electrographic seizures were recorded in 84%. The average time to record bilateral electrographic seizures in the ambulatory setting was 41.6 days (median 13 days, range 0–376 days). Sixteen percent had only unilateral electrographic seizures after an average of 4.6 years of recording. Significance About one third of the subjects implanted with bilateral MTL electrodes required \u3e1 month of chronic ambulatory ECoG before the first contralateral MTL electrographic seizure was recorded. Some patients with suspected bilateral MTL seizures had only unilateral electrographic seizures. Chronic ambulatory ECoG in patients with suspected bilateral MTL seizures provides data in a naturalistic setting, may complement data from inpatient video-EEG monitoring, and can contribute to treatment decisions. Key Points Ambulatory electrocorticograms were obtained in patients implanted with a responsive neurostimulator and bilateral mesial temporal intracranial electrodes. In patients with bilateral seizures, the average time to record bilateral electrographic seizures in the ambulatory setting was 41.6 days (median 13, range 0–376). Some patients suspected to have bilateral MTL seizures after standard diagnostic localization evaluations had only unilateral electrographic seizures. Chronic ambulatory ECoG samples provide naturalistic data that complement inpatient monitoring, and may contribute information that affects treatment decisions

The association of COMT genotype with buproprion treatment response in the treatment of major depressive disorder

Background Pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenetics are being explored in pharmacological treatment response for major depressive disorder (MDD). Interactions between genotype and treatment response may be dose dependent. In this study, we examined whether MDD patients with Met/Met, Met/Val, and Val/Val COMT genotypes differed in their response to bupropion in terms of depression scores. Methods This study utilized a convenience sample of 241 adult outpatients (≥18 years) who met DSM‐5 criteria for MDD and had visits at a Midwest psychopharmacology clinic between February 2016 and January 2017. Exclusion criteria included various comorbid medical, neurological, and psychiatric conditions and current use of benzodiazepines or narcotics. Participants completed genetic testing and the 9 question patient‐rated Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ‐9) at each clinic visit (M = 3.8 visits, SD = 1.5) and were prescribed bupropion or another antidepressant drug. All participants were adherent to pharmacotherapy treatment recommendations for >2 months following genetic testing. Results Participants were mostly Caucasian (85.9%) outpatients (154 female and 87 male) who were 44.5 years old, on average (SD = 17.9). For Val carriers, high bupropion doses resulted in significantly lower PHQ‐9 scores than no bupropion (t(868) = 5.04, p < .001) or low dose bupropion (t(868) = 3.29, p = .001). Val carriers differed significantly from Met/Met patients in response to high dose bupropion (t(868) = −2.03, p = .04), but not to low dose bupropion. Conclusion High‐dose bupropion is beneficial for MDD patients with Met/Val or Val/Val COMT genotypes, but not for patients with Met/Met genotype. Prospective studies are necessary to replicate this pharmacodynamic relationship between bupropion and COMT genotypes and explore economic and clinical outcomes
