    Electromagnetic Scattering Laws in Weyl Systems

    Wavelength determines the length scale of the cross section when electromagnetic waves are scattered by an electrically small object. The cross section diverges for resonant scattering, and diminishes for non-resonant scattering, when wavelength approaches infinity. This scattering law explains the color of the sky as well as the strength of a mobile phone signal. We show that such wavelength scaling comes from free space's conical dispersion at zero frequency. Emerging Weyl systems, offering similar dispersion at non-zero frequencies, lead to new laws of electromagnetic scattering that allow cross sections to be decoupled from the wavelength limit. Diverging and diminishing cross sections can be realized at any target wavelength in a Weyl system, providing unprecedented ability to tailor the strength of wave-matter interactions for radio-frequency and optical applications

    Crossover of h/eh/e and h/2eh/2e oscillations in chiral edge-channel Josephson junctions

    Recently, several experiments reported that the magnetic field interference pattern of the quantum hall edge states mediated Josephson junctions can exhibit Fraunhofer oscillations with a periodicity of either h/eh/e or h/2eh/2e. However, a unified understanding of such a phenomenon is still absent. In this work, we show that the competition between local Andreev reflections and crossed Andreev reflections results in the crossover between h/eh/e and h/2eh/2e quantum oscillations in chiral edge-channel Josephson junctions. Our theory explains why recent experiments observed either h/eh/e or h/2eh/2e oscillations in different samples.     Neuroprotective mechanisms of puerarin in middle cerebral artery occlusion-induced brain infarction in rats

    Puerarin, a major isoflavonoid derived from the Chinese medical herb Radix puerariae (kudzu root), has been reported to be useful in the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases. In the present study, we examined the detailed mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effects of puerarin on inflammatory and apoptotic responses induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. Treatment of puerarin (25 and 50 mg/kg; intraperitoneally) 10 min before MCAO dose-dependently attenuated focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Administration of puerarin at 50 mg/kg, showed marked reduction in infarct size compared with that of control rats. MCAO-induced focal cerebral ischemia was associated with increases in hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and active caspase-3 protein expressions as well as the mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in ischemic regions. These expressions were markedly inhibited by the treatment of puerarin (50 mg/kg). In addition, puerarin (10~50 μM) concentration-dependently inhibited respiratory bursts in human neutrophils stimulated by formyl-Met-Leu-Phe. On the other hand, puerarin (20~500 μM) did not significantly inhibit the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance reaction in rat brain homogenates. An electron spin resonance (ESR) method was conducted on the scavenging activity of puerarin on the free radicals formed. Puerarin (200 and 500 μM) did not reduce the ESR signal intensity of hydroxyl radical formation. In conclusion, we demonstrate that puerarin is a potent neuroprotective agent on MCAO-induced focal cerebral ischemia in vivo. This effect may be mediated, at least in part, by the inhibition of both HIF-1α and TNF-α activation, followed by the inhibition of inflammatory responses (i.e., iNOS expression), apoptosis formation (active caspase-3), and neutrophil activation, resulting in a reduction in the infarct volume in ischemia-reperfusion brain injury. Thus, puerarin treatment may represent a novel approach to lowering the risk of or improving function in ischemia-reperfusion brain injury-related disorders

En primer lugar, analizamos de qué manera la lectura estructuralista-telquelista realizada por Sarduy sobre las obras de Góngora y Lezama Lima le permitió elaborar el concepto de neobarroco como rasgo identitario de la cultura cubana. En segundo lugar, vemos cómo a través de la práctica del "habla indirecta" barthesiana Sarduy acaba constituyendo una crítica literaria en la que Cuba se afirma y se cuestiona a la vez.En el present article s'exploren els usos barthesianos de la crítica literària de Sever Sarduy.     Vacuolar nitrate efflux requires multiple functional redundant nitrate transporter in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Nitrate in plants is preferentially stored in vacuoles; however, how vacuolar nitrate is reallocated and to which biological process(es) it might contribute remain largely elusive. In this study, we functionally characterized three nitrate transporters NPF5.10, NPF5.14, and NPF8.5 that are tonoplast-localized. Ectopic expression in Xenopus laevis oocytes revealed that they mediate low-affinity nitrate transport. Histochemical analysis showed that these transporters were expressed preferentially in pericycle and xylem parenchyma cells. NPF5.10, NPF5.14, and NPF8.5 overexpression significantly decreased vacuolar nitrate contents and nitrate accumulation in Arabidopsis shoots. Further analysis showed that the sextuple mutant (npf5.10 npf5.14 npf8.5 npf5.11 npf5.12 npf5.16) had a higher 15NO3-uptake rate than the wild-type Col-0, but no significant difference was observed for nitrate accumulation between them. The septuple mutant (npf5.11 npf5.12 npf5.16 npf5.10 npf5.14 npf8.5 clca) generated by using CRISPR/Cas9 showed essentially decreased nitrate reallocation compared to wild type when exposed to nitrate starvation, though no further decrease was observed when compared to clca. Notably, NPF5.10, NPF5.14, and NPF8.5 as well as NPF5.11, NPF5.12, and NPF5.16 were consistently induced by mannitol, and more nitrate was detected in the sextuple mutant than in the wild type after mannitol treatment. These observations suggest that vacuolar nitrate efflux is regulated by several functional redundant nitrate transporters, and the reallocation might contribute to osmotic stress response other than mineral nutrition

HCMV infection has been shown to dysregulate the Notch signaling pathway in human neural progenitor cells (NPCs). As an important downstream effector of Notch signaling, the transcriptional regulator Hairy and Enhancer of Split 1 (Hes1) is essential for governing NPC fate and fetal brain development. In the present study, we report that HCMV infection downregulates Hes1 protein levels in infected NPCs. The HCMV 72-kDa immediate-early 1 protein (IE1) is involved in Hes1 degradation by assembling a ubiquitination complex and promoting Hes1 ubiquitination as a potential E3 ubiquitin ligase, followed by proteasomal degradation of Hes1. Sp100A, an important component of PML nuclear bodies, is identified to be another target of IE1-mediated ubiquitination. A C-terminal acidic region in IE1, spanning amino acids 451 to 475, is required for IE1/Hes1 physical interaction and IE1-mediated Hes1 ubiquitination, but is dispensable for IE1/Sp100A interaction and ubiquitination. Our study suggests a novel mechanism linking downregulation of Hes1 protein to neurodevelopmental disorders caused by HCMV infection. Our findings also complement the current knowledge of herpesviruses by identifying IE1 as the first potential HCMV-encoded E3 ubiquitin ligase.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
