    Improving Utility of GPU in Accelerating Industrial Applications with User-centred Automatic Code Translation

    SMEs (Small and medium-sized enterprises), particularly those whose business is focused on developing innovative produces, are limited by a major bottleneck on the speed of computation in many applications. The recent developments in GPUs have been the marked increase in their versatility in many computational areas. But due to the lack of specialist GPU (Graphics processing units) programming skills, the explosion of GPU power has not been fully utilized in general SME applications by inexperienced users. Also, existing automatic CPU-to-GPU code translators are mainly designed for research purposes with poor user interface design and hard-to-use. Little attentions have been paid to the applicability, usability and learnability of these tools for normal users. In this paper, we present an online automated CPU-to-GPU source translation system, (GPSME) for inexperienced users to utilize GPU capability in accelerating general SME applications. This system designs and implements a directive programming model with new kernel generation scheme and memory management hierarchy to optimize its performance. A web-service based interface is designed for inexperienced users to easily and flexibly invoke the automatic resource translator. Our experiments with non-expert GPU users in 4 SMEs reflect that GPSME system can efficiently accelerate real-world applications with at least 4x and have a better applicability, usability and learnability than existing automatic CPU-to-GPU source translators

    GSWO: A Programming Model for GPU-enabled Parallelization of Sliding Window Operations in Image Processing

    Sliding Window Operations (SWOs) are widely used in image processing applications. They often have to be performed repeatedly across the target image, which can demand significant computing resources when processing large images with large windows. In applications in which real-time performance is essential, running these filters on a CPU often fails to deliver results within an acceptable timeframe. The emergence of sophisticated graphic processing units (GPUs) presents an opportunity to address this challenge. However, GPU programming requires a steep learning curve and is error-prone for novices, so the availability of a tool that can produce a GPU implementation automatically from the original CPU source code can provide an attractive means by which the GPU power can be harnessed effectively. This paper presents a GPUenabled programming model, called GSWO, which can assist GPU novices by converting their SWO-based image processing applications from the original C/C++ source code to CUDA code in a highly automated manner. This model includes a new set of simple SWO pragmas to generate GPU kernels and to support effective GPU memory management. We have implemented this programming model based on a CPU-to-GPU translator (C2GPU). Evaluations have been performed on a number of typical SWO image filters and applications. The experimental results show that the GSWO model is capable of efficiently accelerating these applications, with improved applicability and a speed-up of performance compared to several leading CPU-to- GPU source-to-source translators

    Dielectric materials with low permittivity are urgently needed in the field of microelectronics due to the development of integration and miniaturization of integrated circuits. In this work, a series of all-organic polyimide (PI) films with ultra-low-permittivity and high hydrophobicity were successfully synthesized by introducing a kind of fluoroelastomer (FEM). And the significant permittivity reduction phenomenon was discussed through molecular dynamics simulations and practical tests. It was assumed that the hydrogen bond significantly inhibited the dipolar polarization of the FEM/PI composite system, which played an important role in determining the dielectric properties of FEM/PI composite films. At a low filler content of 7 wt%, FEM/PI composites exhibited the optimum permittivity (ε) of 1.21 at 106 Hz, which was the lowest permittivity of the PI films, while a low water absorption of 0.44 % and high thermal stability with a 10 % decomposition temperature (Td10%) of 548 ◦C were also observed. This simple and effective strategy of fabricating ultra-low-permittivity PI film is a potential way to realize commercial process

    The Effects of Acupuncture at Real or Sham Acupoints on the Intrinsic Brain Activity in Mild Cognitive Impairment Patients

    Accumulating neuroimaging studies in humans have shown that acupuncture can modulate a widely distributed brain network in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. Acupuncture at different acupoints could exert different modulatory effects on the brain network. However, whether acupuncture at real or sham acupoints can produce different effects on the brain network in MCI or AD patients remains unclear. Using resting-state fMRI, we reported that acupuncture at Taixi (KI3) induced amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) change of different brain regions in MCI patients from those shown in the healthy controls. In MCI patients, acupuncture at KI3 increased or decreased ALFF in the different regions from those activated by acupuncture in the healthy controls. Acupuncture at the sham acupoint in MCI patients activated the different brain regions from those in healthy controls. Therefore, we concluded that acupuncture displays more significant effect on neuronal activities of the above brain regions in MCI patients than that in healthy controls. Acupuncture at KI3 exhibits different effects on the neuronal activities of the brain regions from acupuncture at sham acupoint, although the difference is only shown at several regions due to the close distance between the above points

    The Influence of Laser Linewidth on the Brillouin Shift Frequency Accuracy of BOTDR

    This paper analyzes the influence of laser linewidth on the measurement accuracy of a frequency-scanning Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (FS-BOTDR), allowing for both the width of Brillouin gain spectrum and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the BOTDR system. The measurement accuracy of the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) is theoretically investigated versus the duration of the probe pulse and the linewidth of the laser source, by numerically simulating how a FS-BOTDR works and evaluating the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) width and the system SNR. The simulation results show that the BFS accuracy is improved as the laser linewidth becomes narrower when the probe pulse width is fixed. We utilize five types of lasers with respective linewidths of 1.05 MHz, 101 kHz, 10.2 kHz, 3.1 kHz, and 98 Hz to compare the BFS measurement accuracy over a ~10 km optical sensing fiber. The experimental results demonstrate that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of BFS decreases with the laser linewidth narrowing from 1.05 MHz to 3.1 kHz, which is in good agreement with the numerical simulation. However, the RMSE of BFS increases when the laser linewidth is less than 3.1 kHz, which may arise from the coherent Rayleigh noise due to a too narrow laser linewidth. The results can provide a theoretical basis and experimental guidance for choosing the appropriate laser linewidth in BOTDR

    The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environments has aroused global concerns; however, minimal information is available regarding their multimedia distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer in marine environments. Herein, we analyzed 77 representative PPCPs in samples of surface and bottom seawater, surface sediments, and benthic biota from the Bohai Sea. PPCPs were pervasively detected in seawater, sediments, and benthic biota, with antioxidants being the most abundant PPCPs. PPCP concentrations positively correlated between the surface and bottom water with a decreasing trend from the coast to the central oceans. Higher PPCP concentrations in sediment were found in the Yellow River estuary, and the variations in the physicochemical properties of PPCPs and sediment produced a different distribution pattern of PPCPs in sediment from seawater. The log D ow, but not log K ow, showed a linear and positive relationship with bioaccumulation and trophic magnification factors and a parabolic relationship with biota-sediment accumulation factors. The trophodynamics of miconazole and acetophenone are reported for the first time. This study provides novel insights into the multimedia distribution and biomagnification potential of PPCPs and suggests that log D ow is a better indicator of their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification
