Going Vegan Or Vegetarian: Motivations & Influences

    Get PDF
After studying hundreds of U.S. and Canadian consumers during their transition to vegetarianism or veganism (collectively referred to as veg*nism), a new report from research organization Faunalytics found that 42% of people’s veg*n journeys were motivated by health, 20% by animal protection, and 18% by environmental concern. For animal advocates interested in helping new vegans and vegetarians maintain their change of lifestyle, study results suggest a focus on self-driven motivations (like personal values or moral identity) and experiences with animal advocacy

Method of generated solutions as a numerical verification tool for ice code

    Get PDF
Journal ArticleMethod of Manufactured solutions is a well-known method used to verify numerical algorithms. It is used to estimate convergence and order of accuracy of the algorithms. The method involves design of analytical solutions to the set of equations solved by the algorithm and generation of the forcing function, which becomes the input to the solver. The disadvantage of this method is that the solutions it investigates may not reflect physical solutions

Longitudinal evidence that Event Related Potential measures of self-regulation do not predict everyday goal pursuit

Self-regulation has been studied across levels of analysis; however, little attention has been paid to the extent to which self-report, neural, and behavioral indices predict goal pursuit in real-life. We use a mixed-method approach (N = 201) to triangulate evidence among established measures of different aspects of self-regulation to predict both the process of goal pursuit using experience sampling, as well as longer-term goal progress at 1, 3, and 6-month follow-ups. While self-reported trait self-control predicts goal attainment months later, we observe a null relationship between longitudinal goal attainment and ERPs associated with performance-monitoring and reactivity to positive/rewarding stimuli. Despite evidence that these ERPs are reliable and trait-like, and despite theorizing that suggests otherwise, our findings suggest that these ERPs are not meaningfully associated with everyday goal attainment. These findings challenge the ecological validity of brain measures thought to assess aspects of self-regulation

Reported self-control is not meaningfully associated with inhibition-related executive function:A Bayesian analysis

Self-control is assessed using a remarkable array of measures. In a series of five data-sets (overall N = 2,641) and a mini meta-analysis, we explored the association between canonical operationalisations of self-control: The Self-Control Scale and two measures of inhibition-related executive functioning (the Stroop and Flanker paradigms). Overall, Bayesian correlational analyses suggested little-to-no relationship between self-reported self-control and performance on the Stroop and Flanker tasks. The Bayesian meta-analytical summary of all five data-sets further favoured a null relationship between both types of measurement. These results suggest that the field’s most widely used measure of self-reported self-control is uncorrelated with two of the most widely adopted executive functioning measures of self-control. Consequently, theoretical and practical conclusions drawn using one measure (e.g., the Self-Control Scale) cannot be generalised to findings using the other (e.g., the Stroop task). The lack of empirical correlation between measures of self-control do not invalidate either measure, but instead suggest that treatments of the construct of self-control need to pay greater attention to convergent validity among the many measures used to operationalize self-control

Language as means of mutual integration in multicultural university environment

    Get PDF
Considering openness of modern Russian education to international students from all over the world the university has been undergoing a huge transformation into a multicultural and multilingual space that provokes new challenges for both administration and students. Addressing these challenges requires a common starting point for adaptation, socialization and further integration. And that common substance is neither more nor less than the language (both native and foreign) that proved to be the best facilitator. Any language (Russian, English and national languages of all students) has an endless capacity to create an international student-friendly environment within the campus and foster mutual integration of students from various cultural backgrounds. Authors come up with the model of deep integration based on building shared lingual environment, seen as a task for University administrators

Repragmatization of the ME TOO Speech Act in Social and Communicative Practices of the Internet

The pragmatic nature of the Me too speech act is studied in two different areas of functioning: outside the Internet environment and in cyberspace. It is noted that in normal communication Me too is a response cue that closes an adjacency pair and does not have a persuasive potential. On the Internet, this speech act undergoes radical changes, turning into a stimulus statement that initiates the mass participation of a certain target audience in the movement against sexual harassment. It is shown that the pragmatic transformation of the phrase is due to the action of both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The transition from a responsive cue to an initial utterance is ensured by a common presupposition for all addressees, while the versatility of intentions acquired by the speech act (affirmation, recognition, accusation, appeal) together with the deictic pronoun of the first person endow it with a high degree of persuasiveness. As the psychological basis for the effective impact of the phrase, the ideas of the American psychological school about the importance of empathy and the therapeutic effect of public actions - confessions are successfully introduced into the consciousness of a globalized community. The novelty of the study is that for the first time the fact of the limited relevance of individual postulates of pragmalinguistic theories for the Internet space is established. The relevance of the work is associated with the need for a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of repragmatization of the Me too , which receives the role of a semiotic marker and a cultural symbol of a new wave of the feminist movement
