Political Activity of Women and Men – the Psychosocial Determinants of Conventional Political Activity

    Get PDF
Political activity is a type of social activity displayed by citizens. Observations and research indicate that gender can be a factor which conditions its degree and forms. Apart from biological gender, which shapes the societal roles of women and men, additional factors that are supposedly responsible for their activities include elements of the system of beliefs (i.e. acknowledged political values, conviction that political activity has an importance, level of satisfaction with democracy as well as individualism and collectivism understood as an element of individual’s mentality). The impact of those factors on degree of conventional political activities among women and men is the subject of surveys which were conducted in 2004, 2010, and 2014 on a group of 1048 students from Polish universities. The received results show that differences in political activity between surveyed men and women as well as varying determinants in both groups are slowly fading away. The most important predictors of women’s political activity include: conviction of its significance in democracy and (dis)satisfaction with the way it functions

Rozwój psychologii kulturowej i badań międzykulturowych dostarcza nowych narzędzi opisu i analizy instytucji małżeństwa. The development of culture psychology and intercultural studies provides new tools for describing and analysing the institution of marriage. It is not any longer only a system of specified functions but also a relation of which the features and the way of functioning is largely regulated by cultural values and norms. The concepts of cultural values constitute a good foundation for interpreting marital life in the context of comparisons between various systems of values. They explain how love is defined as an important principle of couple matching and how marital relations are shaped (power, mutual attractiveness, communication, conflicts and negotiations), especially in the case of multicultural marriages, into which partners bring in different experiences and traditions

University students today in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) confront a world in which old ideals learned under state socialism are being questioned. Despite initial difficulties after the end of socialism, most of these countries now have more stable market economies. This article investigates how macroeconomic variables relate to ideals for future work in samples of students from eight CEE countries and the United States. Results indicate there are some significant relationships between macroeconomic factors and job values. Wanting a job that pays well is associated with poorer economic conditions, whereas wanting a career is associated with better economic conditions. Results for wanting a job that allowed time for family are mixed, with higher GDP per capita a positive predictor but economic growth a negative predictor Economic predictors of wanting a job helping others are weak, with a significant effect of growth found only when US. data are addedVytauto Didžiojo universiteta
