Scholingsdag docenten over micro-organismen
Manufacturing flow line systems: a review of models and analytical results
The most important models and results of the manufacturing flow line literature are described. These include the major classes of models (asynchronous, synchronous, and continuous); the major features (blocking, processing times, failures and repairs); the major properties (conservation of flow, flow rate-idle time, reversibility, and others); and the relationships among different models. Exact and approximate methods for obtaining quantitative measures of performance are also reviewed. The exact methods are appropriate for small systems. The approximate methods, which are the only means available for large systems, are generally based on decomposition, and make use of the exact methods for small systems. Extensions are briefly discussed. Directions for future research are suggested.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant DDM-8914277
The U-line line balancing problem
The traditional line balancing (LB) problem considers a production line in which stations are arranged consecutively in a line. A balance is determined by grouping tasks into stations while moving forward (or backward) through a precedence network. Recently many production lines are being arranged in a "U-line," as a consequence of the use of just-in-time production principles in many factories. In this paper the U-line LB problem is introduced and modelled, and solution procedures are developed. It more complex than the traditional LB problem because tasks can be grouped by moving forward, backward, or simultaneously in both directions, through the precedence network. We also show how solution techniques developed for the traditional LB problem can be adapted for use with the new problem. Some computational results for well-known problems from the literature are given
Embedding JIT into MRP
Today many companies who are using MRP production control systems are investigating how they can produce some or all of their products using just-in time (JIT) principles. They wonder to what extent MRP can provide support for JIT production. This paper describes how JIT can be embedded into MRP. A three-step framework is described which makes use of MRP's backflushing and phantom features, and permits JIT principles to be used to the furthest extent possible. The JIT benefits that will be reported by MRP, as well as those that remain hidden because of MRP, are outlined. Observations from work with North American and Western European manufacturers are also discussed

EXCITATION TRANSFER WITHIN THE OPTICALLY EXCITED DOUBLET Ä’(2E) IN RUBY
La largeur homgène du transition est trouvée d'être 6.0 ± 0.5 MHz.Phonon-assisted spectral transport mediated by Orbach processes via 2Ā(2E) is demonstrated to occur within the inhomogeneously broadened transition between the Zeeman components of the Ē(2E) state in 130 at.ppm ruby at 1.5 K. The experimental method is hole burning with microwave excitation over a variable band-width. The homgeneous width of the transition was found to be 6.0 ± 0.5 MHz
