A comparison of ultrasonic and mechanical stadiometry
AIM: To compare an ultrasonic height measuring device (Gulliver) with mechanical stadiometry and the classical "book and tape measure" method.
METHODS: Blinded duplicate measurements of height were made on each of 14 children by a pair of observers using a stadiometer (H) and Gulliver (G). Height was measured on a further 18 children by parents and an auxologist using Gulliver and the book and tape method (TM), and the results were compared with those obtained with a single stadiometry measurement. Finally, measurement of a rigid metal box was made on 10 occasions by the three methods.
RESULTS: In the group of 14 children, the mean difference (range) in height (H minus G) was +2.8 cm (+0.5 to +4.55 cm), with H giving a systematically higher value in 276 of 280 individual measurements. In the group of 18 children, height by H was greater than by G or TM in 47 of 52 individual measurements. The mean (SD) height of the box by H (61.60 (0.07) cm) was greater than by G (60.96 (0.15) cm; p 0.05). G and TM produced three times less reliable estimations of height than H, but with a large difference in cost, and there was evidence of systematic underrecording of height by 0.5 cm with G.
CONCLUSIONS: Stadiometry is precise and reproducible, and can detect true changes in height over one month periods in mid-childhood, and should remain the standard way of observing growth. The book and tape method can produce clinically acceptable quarterly estimations of height that can be performed in the home

Liquid Crystal Polarimetry for Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping of 3He
We detail the design and operation of a compact, discharge light polarimeter
for metastability exchange optical pumping of 3He gas near 1 torr under a low
magnetic field. The nuclear polarization of 3He can be discerned from its
electron polarization, measured via the circular polarization of 668 nm
discharge light from an RF excitation. This apparatus measures the circular
polarization of this very dim discharge light using a nematic liquid crystal
wave retarder (LCR) and a high-gain, transimpedance amplified Si photodiode. We
outline corrections required in such a measurement, and discuss contributions
to its systematic error
Effect of processing on the proximate composition and mineral content of Bambara groundnut (voandezeia subterranean)
The study was undertaken to investigate the effect of processing on the proximate and mineral composition of Bambara groundnut (Voandzeia subterranean). Traditional processing methods namely soaking and cooking were employed. There was substantial recovery of crude protein after processing from 20.27 + 1.41 to 23.63 + 0.78 (g/100g dry weight). Result of the moisture content ranged from 8.70 +2.50 to 9.5 +0.07 (g/100g dry weight), either extract 6.85 +0.43 to 13.11 + 1.94 (g/100g dry weight), nitrogen free extract 51.96 + 1.38 to 44.0 + 3.34 (g/100g dry weight), ash content 5.37 + 0.12 to 2.89 + 0.59 (g/100g dry weight), and crude fibre 6.85 + 0.33 to 4.64 + 0.31 (g/100g dry weight) after processing values of the mineral concentrations show that
potassium was significantly (P< 0.05) affected by processing while manganese was not detectable
after processing. Other minerals studied were not significantly affected by processing. The results show that the processing improved the nutritional value of the nut which could serve as important component of food

Dynamics of chains grafted on solid wall during polymer melt extrusion
The objective of the present work is the mathematical modeling of the dynamics of polymer molecules grafted on a solid boundary during polymer melt extrusion. This topic is closely related to the long-standing problem of polymer flow instabilities encountered in industry when extruding melts. In order to describe the behavior of the tethered chains, we introduce the bond vector probability distribution function (BVPDF) which appears to be a simple, yet effective mathematical 'tool'. The bond vector, i.e. the tangent vector to a polymer chain depending on the position along the chain and on time, describes the local geometry via its direction and the local stretching of the chain via its length. The BVPDF contains all information about the geometry of the ensemble of chains. Via averaging over the BVPDF we can calculate all interesting macrsocopic quantities, e.g. the thickness of and stress in the layer of tethered molecules. The time dependence of the BVPDF yields the time evolution of the system. We derive the equation of motion for the BVPDF taking into account all important mechanisms, such as reptation and (convective) constraint release. Besides that, we show that all macroscopic quantities of practical interest can be expressed via second order moments of this distribution function. \u
Sexuality and Power in Elizabeth Inchbald\u27s \u3cem\u3eA Simple Story\u3c/em\u3e.
A Simple Story is controversial because of Inchbald\u27s seemingly conflicting statements about women\u27s proper education and because the most powerful character in the novel openly defies social norms. Miss Milner, the heroine of the first half of A Simple Story, overtly displays her sexuality and uses it to gain control of men. Her guardian Dorriforth, a Catholic priest, attempts to repress her sexual power. Miss Milner dies in exile, but Inchbald rewards her by saving her from a marriage in which her husband subdues her sexuality. Contrarily, Miss Milner\u27s daughter Matilda represses her sexuality and conforms to eighteenth-century standards of how a woman should behave. Rather than rewarding her with a traditional marriage, Inchbald relegates her to a marriage without passion. Inchbald writes two parallel cautionary tales in order to emphasize that a woman must balance the two extremes and embrace sexuality while embracing intellect
