Equivalence between two-dimensional alternating/random Ising model and the ground state of one-dimensional alternating/random XY chain
It is derived that the two-dimensional Ising model with alternating/random
interactions and with periodic/free boundary conditions is equivalent to the
ground state of the one-dimensional alternating/random XY model with the
corresponding periodic/free boundary conditions. This provides an exact
equivalence between a random rectangular Ising model, in which the
Griffiths-McCoy phase appears, and a random XY chain.Comment: 10 page
Carbon nanotube: a low-loss spin-current waveguide
We demonstrate with a quantum-mechanical approach that carbon nanotubes are
excellent spin-current waveguides and are able to carry information stored in a
precessing magnetic moment for long distances with very little dispersion and
with tunable degrees of attenuation. Pulsed magnetic excitations are predicted
to travel with the nanotube Fermi velocity and are able to induce similar
excitations in remote locations. Such an efficient way of transporting magnetic
information suggests that nanotubes are promising candidates for memory devices
with fast magnetization switchings
User-generated content and travel planning: an application of the Theory of Planned Behavior
User-Generated Content (UGC) such as online travel reviews written by travelers and posted to virtual communities are being used more frequently to communicate travel-related information. UGC is therefore helping travelers to make decisions about their travel. Utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which is one of the most comprehensive models explaining behavioral intention, this study contributes to the further development of theories of online consumer behavior by determining which factors are most important in relation to the use of UGC in the travel industry. The TPB has three independent determinants of behavioral intention: attitude toward the behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control. Therefore the aim of this paper is to examine the roles of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavior control in respect of travelers’ intention to use UGC when making travel plans
The solution structure of sarafotoxin-c: implications for ligand recognition by endothelin
The solution structure of sarafotoxin-c has been determined using NMR spectroscopy. A total of 112 interproton distance constraints derived from two-dimensional MMR spectra were used to calculate a family of structures using a combination of distance geometry and dynamical simulated annealing calculations. The structures reveal a well defined cu helix extending from Glu(9) to Cys(15) and an N-terminal region (Cys(1)-Asp(8)) that is tightly constrained by disulfide bands to Cys residues in the central helix. In contrast, the C-terminal region (His(16)-Trp(21)) does not adopt a defined conformation in the final family of structures. This is consistent with the paucity of NMR-derived structural constraints obtained for this region and leads to the suggestion that the C-terminal region oscillates rapidly between a number of substantially different conformers. It is proposed that differences between the central helix of the endothelin and sarafotoxin isopeptides might be important in binding of these ligands by the G protein-coupled endothelin receptors
Altered expression of caspases-4 and -5 during inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer : diagnostic and therapeutic potential
Caspases are a group of proteolytic enzymes involved in the co-ordination of cellular processes, including cellular homeostasis, inflammation and apoptosis. Altered activity of caspases, particularly caspase-1, has been implicated in the development of intestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the involvement of two related inflammatory caspase members, caspases-4 and -5, during intestinal homeostasis and disease has not yet been established. This study demonstrates that caspases-4 and -5 are involved in IBD-associated intestinal inflammation. Furthermore, we found a clear correlation between stromal caspase-4 and -5 expression levels, inflammation and disease activity in ulcerative colitis patients. Deregulated intestinal inflammation in IBD patients is associated with an increased risk of developing CRC. We found robust expression of caspases-4 and -5 within intestinal epithelial cells, exclusively within neoplastic tissue, of colorectal tumours. An examination of adjacent normal, inflamed and tumour tissue from patients with colitis-associated CRC confirmed that stromal expression of caspases-4 and -5 is increased in inflamed and dysplastic tissue, while epithelial expression is restricted to neoplastic tissue. In addition to identifying caspases-4 and -5 as potential targets for limiting intestinal inflammation, this study has identified epithelial-expressed caspases-4 and -5 as biomarkers with diagnostic and therapeutic potential in CRC
G328.4+0.2 : A large and luminous Crab-like supernova remnant
We report on radio continuum and HI observations of the radio source
G328.4+0.2 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our results confirm
G328.4+0.2 to be a filled-center nebula with no surrounding shell, showing
significant linear polarization and an almost flat spectral index. These
results lead us to conclude that G328.4+0.2 is a Crab-like, or ``plerionic'',
supernova remnant (SNR), presumably powered by an unseen central pulsar. HI
absorption towards G328.4+0.2 puts a lower limit on its distance of 17.4 +/-
0.9 kpc, making it the largest (D=25 pc) and most luminous (L_R = 3e35 erg/s)
Crab-like SNR in the Galaxy. We infer G328.4+0.2 to be significantly older than
the Crab Nebula, but powered by a pulsar which is fast spinning (P<20 ms) and
which has a comparatively low magnetic field (B<1e12 G). We propose G328.4+0.2,
G74.9+1.2 and N157B as a distinct group of large-diameter, high-luminosity

The quantum metrology triangle and the re-definition of the SI ampere and kilogram; Analysis of a reduced set of observational equations
We have developed a set of seven observational equations that include all of
the physics necessary to relate the most important of the fundamental constants
to the definitions of the SI kilogram and ampere. We have used these to
determine the influence of alternative definitions being considered for the SI
kilogram and ampere on the uncertainty of three of the fundamental constants
(h, e and mu). We have also reviewed the experimental evidence for the
exactness of the quantum metrology triangle resulting from experiments
combining the quantum Hall effect, the Josephson effects and single-electron

Jury deliberation: An observation study.
In this article, the way that the jury works is considered from a
group-analytic perspective. Observational fieldwork of simulated
jury deliberations is presented. The data was gathered from a joint
funded Home Office and Law Commission project at the Socio-
Legal Studies Centre, Oxford in 1995. Inferences are drawn from the
observations and the unconscious group processes are considered.

Progress towards an accurate determination of the Boltzmann constant by Doppler spectroscopy
In this paper, we present significant progress performed on an experiment
dedicated to the determination of the Boltzmann constant, k, by accurately
measuring the Doppler absorption profile of a line in a gas of ammonia at
thermal equilibrium. This optical method based on the first principles of
statistical mechanics is an alternative to the acoustical method which has led
to the unique determination of k published by the CODATA with a relative
accuracy of 1.7 ppm. We report on the first measurement of the Boltzmann
constant by laser spectroscopy with a statistical uncertainty below 10 ppm,
more specifically 6.4 ppm. This progress results from improvements in the
detection method and in the statistical treatment of the data. In addition, we
have recorded the hyperfine structure of the probed saQ(6,3) rovibrational line
of ammonia by saturation spectroscopy and thus determine very precisely the
induced 4.36 (2) ppm broadening of the absorption linewidth. We also show that,
in our well chosen experimental conditions, saturation effects have a
negligible impact on the linewidth. Finally, we draw the route to future
developments for an absolute determination of with an accuracy of a few ppm.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure
