Validity of the activPAL3 activity monitor in people moderately affected by Multiple Sclerosis
Background: Walking is the primary form of physical activity performed by people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), therefore it is important to ensure the validity of tools employed to measure walking activity. The aim of this study was to assess the criterion validity of the activPAL3 activity monitor during overground walking in people with MS.\ud
Methods: Validity of the activPAL3 accelerometer was compared to video observation in 20 people moderately affected by MS. Participants walked 20-30m twice along a straight quiet corridor at a comfortable speed.\ud
Results: Inter-rater reliability of video observations was excellent (all intraclass correlations > 0.99). The mean difference (activPAL3- mean of raters) was -4.70 ± 9.09, -4.55 s ± 10.76 and 1.11 s ± 1.11 for steps taken, walking duration and upright duration respectively. These differences represented 8.7, 10.0 and 1.8% of the mean for each measure respectively. The activPAL3 tended to underestimate steps taken and walking duration in those who walked at cadences of ≤ 38 steps/minute by 60% and 47% respectively.\ud
Discussion: The activPAL3 is valid for measuring walking activity in people moderately affected by MS. It is accurate for upright duration regardless of cadence. In participants with slow walking cadences, outcomes of steps taken and walking duration should be interpreted with caution
Validation of Ultrahigh Dependability for Software-Based Systems
Modern society depends on computers for a number of critical tasks in which failure can have very high costs. As a consequence, high levels of dependability (reliability, safety, etc.) are required from such computers, including their software. Whenever a quantitative approach to risk is adopted, these requirements must be stated in quantitative terms, and a rigorous demonstration of their being attained is necessary. For software used in the most critical roles, such demonstrations are not usually supplied. The fact is that the dependability requirements often lie near the limit of the current state of the art, or beyond, in terms not only of the ability to satisfy them, but also, and more often, of the ability to demonstrate that they are satisfied in the individual operational products (validation). We discuss reasons why such demonstrations cannot usually be provided with the means available: reliability growth models, testing with stable reliability, structural dependability modelling, as well as more informal arguments based on good engineering practice. We state some rigorous arguments about the limits of what can be validated with each of such means. Combining evidence from these different sources would seem to raise the levels that can be validated; yet this improvement is not such as to solve the problem. It appears that engineering practice must take into account the fact that no solution exists, at present, for the validation of ultra-high dependability in systems relying on complex software
Non-hermitean delocalization in an array of wells with variable-range widths
Nonhermitean hamiltonians of convection-diffusion type occur in the
description of vortex motion in the presence of a tilted magnetic field as well
as in models of driven population dynamics. We study such hamiltonians in the
case of rectangular barriers of variable size. We determine Lyapunov exponent
and wavenumber of the eigenfunctions within an adiabatic approach, allowing to
reduce the original d=2 phase space to a d=1 attractor. PACS

Attitudinal factors associated with drink counting
Introduction: ‘Count your drinks’ is a protective behavioural strategy (PBS) that has been found to be effective in reducing alcohol consumption. Previous research has shown that females, older people and low-risk drinkers are more likely to use this strategy, but little is known about the attitudinal factors associated with engaging in drink counting. This information is important for developing effective interventions to encourage use of this PBS. The aim of this paper was to assess whether the following attitudinal factors are associated with frequency of enactment of the ‘Count your drinks’ PBS: (i) perceived ease of use; (ii) perceived effectiveness; (iii) personal relevance; and (iv) believability. Methods: A total of 683 Australian drinkers completed an online survey assessing demographic variables, alcohol consumption, frequency of drink counting and attitudes to the ‘Count your drinks’ PBS. A hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine whether the attitudinal factors were associated with frequency of enactment after controlling for demographic and alcohol-related factors. Results: Attitudes to the ‘Count your drinks’ PBS accounted for 28% of the variance in reported frequency of drink counting. Perceptions of personal relevance, ease of use and effectiveness were found to be significantly associated with frequency of enactment. Discussion and Conclusions: Interventions designed to encourage drinkers to count their drinks should aim to increase the perceived personal relevance, ease of use and effectiveness of this strategy
Quark Coulomb Interactions and the Mass Difference of Mirror Nuclei
We study the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer (ONS) anomaly in the binding energy of
mirror nuclei at high density by adding a single neutron or proton to a quark
gluon plasma. In this high-density limit we find an anomaly equal to two-thirds
of the Coulomb exchange energy of a proton. This effect is dominated by quark
electromagnetic interactions---rather than by the up-down quark mass
difference. At normal density we calculate the Coulomb energy of neutron matter
using a string-flip quark model. We find a nonzero Coulomb energy because of
the neutron's charged constituents. This effect could make a significant

Andreev Bound States at the Interface of Antiferromagnets and d-wave Superconductors
We set up a simple transfer matrix formalism to study the existence of bound
states at interfaces and in junctions between antiferromagnets and d-wave
superconductors. The well-studied zero energy mode at the {110} interface
between an insulator and a d-wave superconductor is spin split when the
insulator is an antiferromagnet. This has as a consequence that any competing
interface induced superconducting order parameter that breaks the time reversal
symmetry needs to exceed a critical value before a charge current is induced

An overview of jets and outflows in stellar mass black holes
In this book chapter, we will briefly review the current empirical
understanding of the relation between accretion state and and outflows in
accreting stellar mass black holes. The focus will be on the empirical
connections between X-ray states and relativistic (`radio') jets, although we
are now also able to draw accretion disc winds into the picture in a systematic
way. We will furthermore consider the latest attempts to measure/order jet
power, and to compare it to other (potentially) measurable quantities, most

Parity Mixed Doublets in A = 36 Nuclei
The -circular polarizations () and asymmetries
() of the parity forbidden M1 + E2 -decays: MeV) and MeV)
MeV) are investigated theoretically. We use the recently proposed
Warburton-Becker-Brown shell-model interaction. For the weak forces we discuss
comparatively different weak interaction models based on different assumptions
for evaluating the weak meson-hadron coupling constants. The results determine
a range of values from which we find the most probable values:
