Studies of Paleozoic fungi. IV. Wall ultrastructure of fossil endogonaceous chlamydospores
Fossil endogonaceous chlamydospores are described from the aerial axes and roots of
several Paleozoic plants preserved in calcilutite nodules and calcareous coal balls. Specimens
come from six Paleozoic localities extending from the uppermost Lower Devonian through
the Upper Pennsylvanian. Although fossil chlamydospores are markedly similar to the modern
Endogonaceae in transmitted light, ultrastructural comparisons have not previously been
made. The fine structure of the walls of these spores is consistent with past interpretations
which relate them to the modern Endogonaceae, but thorough comparisons cannot be made
due to the lack of comparable ultrastructural information from extant VA mycorrhizae. The

Non-positive experiences encountered by pupils during participation in a mindfulness-informed school-based intervention
Mindfulness-informed school-based mental health curricula show much promise in cultivating a positive school climate which supports the well-being and mental health of pupils and staff. However, non-positive pupil outcomes and experiences of school-based mental health interventions are often under-recognised and under-reported. This study sought to capture non-positive pupil experiences of a popular mindfulness-informed curriculum. Some pupils across all schools in the study described non-positive experiences, including having troubling thoughts and emotions, and not finding the programme effective. Contexts surrounding these experiences are explored and linked to existing literature, and subsequent recommendations for improvements are made, including the importance of having clear programme structure, definitions and aims, acknowledging and accommodating fidelity issues as best as possible, and better highlighting the potential for non-positive experiences and how they may be reduced
Parent report of exclusive breastfeeding after attending a combined midwifery and chiropractic feeding clinic in the UK: A cross-sectional service evaluation
This service evaluation investigated an interdisciplinary allied professional health care strategy to address the problem of suboptimal breastfeeding. A clinic of midwives and chiropractors was developed in a university-affiliated clinic in the UK to care for suboptimal feeding through a multidisciplinary approach. No studies have previously investigated the effect of such an approach. The aim was to assess any impact to the breastfeeding dyad and maternal satisfaction after attending the multidisciplinary clinic through a service evaluation. Eighty-five initial questionnaires were completed and 72 (85%) follow-up questionnaires were returned. On follow-up, 93% of mothers reported an improvement in feeding as well as satisfaction with the care provided. Prior to treatment, 26% of the infants were exclusively breastfed. At the followup survey 86% of mothers reported exclusive breastfeeding. The relative risk ratio for exclusive breastfeeding after attending the multidisciplinary clinic was 3.6 (95%CI 2.4-5.4)
Studies of hepatic synthesis in vivo of plasma proteins, including orosomucoid, transferrin, α-antitrypsin, C8, and factor B
Serum protein types were determined in eight recipients and donors in cases of hepatic homotransplantation. A change from recipient type to donor type was observed for factor B, C8, orosomucoid, haptoglobin, transferrin, α1-antitrypsin, C3 and C6, but not for Gm and Inv immunoglobulin markers. The results indicate that all the proteins studied (except immunoglobulins) are produced primarily by the liver in vivo. © 1980

A feedback mechanism between PLD and deadenylase PARN for the shortening of eukaryotic poly(A) mRNA tails that is deregulated in cancer cells
ABSTRACT The removal of mRNA transcript poly(A) tails by 3′→5′ exonucleases is the rate-limiting step in mRNA decay in eukaryotes. Known cellular deadenylases are the CCR4-NOT and PAN complexes, and poly(A)-specific ribonuclease (PARN). The physiological roles and regulation for PARN is beginning to be elucidated. Since phospholipase D (PLD2 isoform) gene expression is upregulated in breast cancer cells and PARN is downregulated, we examined whether a signaling connection existed between these two enzymes. Silencing PARN with siRNA led to an increase in PLD2 protein, whereas overexpression of PARN had the opposite effect. Overexpression of PLD2, however, led to an increase in PARN expression. Thus, PARN downregulates PLD2 whereas PLD2 upregulates PARN. Co-expression of both PARN and PLD2 mimicked this pattern in non-cancerous cells (COS-7 fibroblasts) but, surprisingly, not in breast cancer MCF-7 cells, where PARN switches from inhibition to activation of PLD2 gene and protein expression. Between 30 and 300 nM phosphatidic acid (PA), the product of PLD enzymatic reaction, added exogenously to culture cells had a stabilizing role of both PARN and PLD2 mRNA decay. Lastly, by immunofluorescence microscopy, we observed an intracellular co-localization of PA-loaded vesicles (0.1-1 nm) and PARN. In summary, we report for the first time the involvement of a phospholipase (PLD2) and PA in mediating PARN-induced eukaryotic mRNA decay and the crosstalk between the two enzymes that is deregulated in breast cancer cells
Stratigraphy, age, and provenance of the Eocene Chumstick basin, Washington Cascades; implications for paleogeography, regional tectonics, and development of strike-slip basins: Reply
We welcome the comment by Evans (2022) and the opportunity to further discuss our study of the Chumstick Formation. The correlation of fault-bound nonmarine sedimentary units in central and western Washington has been a topic of interest, and debate, for many years (Frizzell, 1979; Taylor et al., 1988; Gresens et al., 1981; Gresens, 1983; Evans and Johnson, 1989; Evans, 1994; Cheney and Hayman, 2009). However, many questions about the regional correlation of these units were resolved with the publication of a suite of internally consistent high-precision 206Pb/238U zircon dates from volcanic interbeds throughout the early to middle Eocene stratigraphy (Eddy et al., 2016). This data set confirmed the timing of sediment deposition of the different members within the Chumstick Formation. Donaghy et al. (2021) provides a detailed study of the Chumstick Formation, which builds on earlier research by Gresens et al. (1981, 1983), McClincy (1986), and Evans (1994) by incorporating new geochronologic information and additional clast counts, detrital zircon geochronology, and facies mapping. We interpret large parts of the Chumstick Formation to represent a spatially and temporally distinct sedimentary system between the Leavenworth and Entiat fault zones that likely formed as a pull-apart basin. Evans (2022) objects to several of the interpretations presented in Donaghy et al. (2021) regarding the relationship between different members of the Chumstick Formation and surrounding sedimentary units, the timing of strike-slip faulting, and the regional tectonic setting of these rocks. Magnetohydrodynamics dynamical relaxation of coronal magnetic fields. I. Parallel untwisted magnetic fields in 2D
Context. For the last thirty years, most of the studies on the relaxation of
stressed magnetic fields in the solar environment have onlyconsidered the
Lorentz force, neglecting plasma contributions, and therefore, limiting every
equilibrium to that of a force-free field. Aims. Here we begin a study of the
non-resistive evolution of finite beta plasmas and their relaxation to
magnetohydrostatic states, where magnetic forces are balanced by
plasma-pressure gradients, by using a simple 2D scenario involving a
hydromagnetic disturbance to a uniform magnetic field. The final equilibrium
state is predicted as a function of the initial disturbances, with aims to
demonstrate what happens to the plasma during the relaxation process and to see
what effects it has on the final equilibrium state. Methods. A set of numerical
experiments are run using a full MHD code, with the relaxation driven by
magnetoacoustic waves damped by viscous effects. The numerical results are
compared with analytical calculations made within the linear regime, in which
the whole process must remain adiabatic. Particular attention is paid to the
thermodynamic behaviour of the plasma during the relaxation. Results. The
analytical predictions for the final non force-free equilibrium depend only on
the initial perturbations and the total pressure of the system. It is found
that these predictions hold surprisingly well even for amplitudes of the
perturbation far outside the linear regime. Conclusions. Including the effects
of a finite plasma beta in relaxation experiments leads to significant
differences from the force-free case
