Morphology of the recently re-classified Tasman masked booby (Sula dactylatra tasmani) breeding on the Kermadec Islands
Once thought to be extinct, the Tasman Booby Sula tasmani has recently been re-classified as a subspecies of the Masked Booby S. dactylatra on the basis of genetic data. This re-classification raises the issue of whether this novel clade has a distinct morphology. Morphological differences in size, as well as coloration of integuments, bill and iris have been found in other subspecies of the Masked Booby but have not yet been reported for live Kermadec Islands breeding individuals. Museum specimens from this breeding location have been separated from other Pacific breeding subspecies by their longer wings. We sampled a total of 21 individuals from North Meyer Islet, Kermadec Group, New
Zealand, and applied molecular sexing to obtain sex-specific morphometric measurements. We matched dimorphism in vocalization with genetic sexing results and photographic documentation of human-assessed bill, foot and eye coloration. While culmen measurements were consistent with reports from museum specimens, wing chords from living specimens of Tasman Masked Boobies were 3% and 4% larger in males and females, respectively. Females had larger culmens and wings than males, consistent with the low extent of sexual dimorphism reported from museum skins. Adult Tasman Masked Boobies had yellow to buff-yellow feet, while fledglings, as in most sulids, had grey
to greyish-yellow feet. Our findings confirm the distinctively long wing and particular iris coloration previously reported for the taxon and provide the first description of integument coloration of live specimens. This study highlights the importance of including in situ assessment in taxon descriptions
Sulphur-bearing molecules in AGB stars I: The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide
Through a survey of (sub-)millimetre emission lines of various
sulphur-bearing molecules, we aim to determine which molecules are the primary
carriers of sulphur in different types of AGB stars. In this paper, the first
in a series, we investigate the occurrence of HS in AGB circumstellar
envelopes and determine its abundance, where possible. We have surveyed 20 AGB
stars with a range of mass-loss rates and of different chemical types using the
APEX telescope to search for rotational transition lines of five key
sulphur-bearing molecules: CS, SiS, SO, SO and HS. Here we present our
results for HS, including detections, non-detections and detailed radiative
transfer modelling of the detected lines. We compare results based on different
descriptions of the molecular excitation of HS and different abundance
distributions, including those derived from chemical modelling results. We
detected HS towards five AGB stars, all of which have high mass-loss rates
of yr and are oxygen-rich. HS
was not detected towards the carbon or S-type stars that fall in a similar
mass-loss range. For the stars in our sample with detections, we find peak
o-HS abundances relative to H between and . Overall, we conclude that HS can play a significant role in
oxygen-rich AGB stars with higher mass-loss rates, but is unlikely to play a
key role in stars of other chemical types or the lower mass-loss rate
oxygen-rich stars. For two sources, V1300 Aql and GX Mon, HS is most likely

Isoform-selective susceptibility of DISC1/phosphodiesterase-4 complexes to dissociation by elevated intracellular cAMP levels
Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) is a genetic susceptibility factor for schizophrenia and related severe psychiatric conditions. DISC1 is a multifunctional scaffold protein that is able to interact with several proteins, including the independently identified schizophrenia risk factor phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B). Here we report that the 100 kDa full-length DISC1 isoform (fl-DISC1) can bind members of each of the four gene, cAMP-specific PDE4 family. Elevation of intracellular cAMP levels, so as to activate protein kinase A, caused the release of PDE4D3 and PDE4C2 isoforms from fl-DISC1 while not affecting binding of PDE4B1 and PDE4A5 isoforms. Using a peptide array strategy, we show that PDE4D3 binds fl-DISC1 through two regions found in common with PDE4B isoforms, the interaction of which is supplemented because of the presence of additional PDE4B-specific binding sites. We propose that the additional binding sites found in PDE4B1 underpin its resistance to release during cAMP elevation. We identify, for the first time, a functional distinction between the 100 kDa long DISC1 isoform and the short 71 kDa isoform. Thus, changes in the expression pattern of DISC1 and PDE4 isoforms offers a means to reprogram their interaction and to determine whether the PDE4 sequestered by DISC1 is released after cAMP elevation. The PDE4B-specific binding sites encompass point mutations in mouse Disc1 that confer phenotypes related to schizophrenia and depression and that affect binding to PDE4B. Thus, genetic variation in DISC1 and PDE4 that influence either isoform expression or docking site functioning may directly affect psychopathology
CS Lines Profiles in Hot Cores
We present a theoretical study of CS line profiles in archetypal hot cores.
We provide estimates of line fluxes from the CS(1-0) to the CS(15-14)
transitions and present the temporal variation of these fluxes. We find that
\textit{i)} the CS(1-0) transition is a better tracer of the Envelope of the
hot core whereas the higher-J CS lines trace the ultra-compact core;
\textit{ii)} the peak temperature of the CS transitions is a good indicator of
the temperature inside the hot core; \textit{iii)} in the Envelope, the older
the hot core the stronger the self-absorption of CS; \textit{iv)} the
fractional abundance of CS is highest in the innermost parts of the
ultra-compact core, confirming the CS molecule as one of the best tracers of

The fundamental problem of command : plan and compliance in a partially centralised economy
When a principal gives an order to an agent and advances resources for its implementation, the temptations for the agent to shirk or steal from the principal rather than comply constitute the fundamental problem of command. Historically, partially centralised command economies enforced compliance in various ways, assisted by nesting the fundamental problem of exchange within that of command. The Soviet economy provides some relevant data. The Soviet command system combined several enforcement mechanisms in an equilibrium that shifted as agents learned and each mechanism's comparative costs and benefits changed. Large scale grain mantle disruption in the Galactic Center
We present observations of C2H5OH toward molecular clouds in Sgr A, Sgr B2
and associated with thermal and non-thermal features in the Galactic center.
C2H5OH emission in Sgr A and Sgr B2 is widespread, but not uniform. C2H5OH
emission is much weaker or it is not detected in some molecular clouds in both
complexes, in particular those with radial velocities between 70 and 120 km/s.
While most of the clouds associated with the thermal features do not show
C2H5OH emission, that associated with the Non-Thermal Radio Arc shows emission.
The fractional abundance of C2H5OH in most of the clouds with radial velocities
between 0 and 70 km/s in Sgr A and Sgr B2 is relatively high, of few 1e-8. The
C2H5OH abundance decreases by more than one order of magnitude (aprox. 1e-9) in
the clouds associated with the thermal features. The large abundance of C2H5OH
in the gas-phase indicates that C2H5OH has formed in grains and released to

Instrument Packages for the Cold, Dark, High Radiation Environments
We are developing a small cold temperature instrument package concept that integrates a cold temperature power system and radhard ultra low temperature ultra low power electronics components and power supplies now under development into a cold temperature surface operational version of a planetary surface instrument package. We are already in the process of developing a lower power lower tem-perature version for an instrument of mutual interest to SMD and ESMD to support the search for volatiles (the mass spectrometer VAPoR, Volatile Analysis by Pyrolysis of Regolith) both as a stand alone instrument and as part of an environmental monitoring package
Effect of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors on Endothelial Function: A Systematic Review of Preclinical Studies
IntroductionWhile the beneficial effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors on cardiovascular and renal outcomes are recognized, their direct effects on endothelial function remain unclear. We, therefore, undertook a systematic review to evaluate the current literature in this area.MethodsElectronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Medline) were systematically searched using PRISMA guidelines for studies involving the in vitro, in vivo, or ex vivo administration of SGLT-2 inhibitors to animals, vascular tissue, or vascular endothelial cells.ResultsOf 144 retrieved publications, 24 experimental studies met the inclusion criteria. Reporting of possible sources of bias were poor, making the overall risk of bias difficult to assess. Within the 24 studies, the SGLT-2 inhibitors canagliflozin, ipragliflozin, empagliflozin, dapagliflozin, tofogliflozin, and luseogliflozin were assessed as interventions. Animal model studies (n = 17) demonstrated that all SGLT-2 inhibitors prevented endothelial dysfunction and enhanced endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in diabetic and non-diabetic models. In vitro studies (n = 9) using human endothelial cells indicated a direct anti-inflammatory effect of dapagliflozin (1–100 nM) and canagliflozin, (10 µM), while empagliflozin (1 and 10 µM) improved viability of hyperglycemic cells. Potential mechanisms of action of the SGLT-2 inhibitors include a reduction in oxidative stress, modulation of adhesion molecules and reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines.ConclusionsPreclinical studies indicate that SGLT-2 inhibitors attenuate vascular dysfunction in preclinical models via a combination of mechanisms that appear to act independently of glucose-lowering benefits
