    Polytypism and Unique Site Preference in LiZnSb: A Superior Thermoelectric Reveals Its True Colors

    The first example of polytypism in the I–II–V semiconductors has been demonstrated with the synthesis of cubic LiZnSb by a low-temperature solution-phase method. This phase exhibits a unique coloring pattern that is novel for this class of compounds. The choice of site configuration has a considerable impact on the band structure of these materials, which in turn affects the transport properties. While the hexagonal polytype has been suggested as a promising n-type and extremely poor p-type thermoelectric material, the cubic analogue is calculated to have high efficiencies for both the n- and p-type derivatives (1.64 and 1.43, respectively, at 600 K). Furthermore, the cubic phase is found to be the energetically favored polytype. This surprising result provides a rationale for the lack of success in synthesizing the hexagonal polytype in either stoichiometric or n-type compositions

    Supporting the 'Sharing Institution' - Practical Steps Towards a More Open Teaching and Learning Culture

Although a primary motivation is Open Access both institutional and academic needs must also be met in order to foster this spirit effectively. There is now a greater emphasis on creating a more open culture for teaching and learning and institutions are again beginning to play their part more readily. On a larger scale, there are pioneering global examples of courses being preserved and complex learning materials being deposited in national and international databases. But what does fostering a more open culture in the practice of teaching mean for the institution itself and its academics? The virtual learning environment has given greater opportunities for effective administration of courses but in other ways it has had the opposite effect on sharing and re-use. There is potential for institutional solutions which are complementary to the global landscape. In this paper we report on the practical experiences and issues met, in setting up a institutional resource, EdShare, as a vehicle for sharing educational materials more easily in a multi-disciplinary institution. With constructive feedback from faculty, within the EdSpace project, EdShare has migrated into a more visual, web 2.0 style, resource with a flexible deposit process promoting 'micro-sharing'. It now offers a range of sharing options to support the teaching workflow in an encouraging atmosphere. Other features will support the growing emphasis on multidisciplinary teaching and collaboration - both internally and externally.JIS

    The STAT5A-mediated induction of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 expression by prolactin or growth hormone in adipocytes

    The purpose of this study was to determine whether pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK)4 was expressed in adipocytes and whether PDK4 expression was hormonally regulated in fat cells. Both Northern blot and Western blot analyses were conducted on samples isolated from 3T3-L1 adipocytes after various treatments with prolactin (PRL), growth hormone (GH), and/or insulin. Transfection of PDK4 promoter reporter constructs was performed. In addition, glucose uptake measurements were conducted. Our studies demonstrate that PRL and porcine GH can induce the expression of PDK4 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Our studies also show that insulin pretreatment can attenuate the ability of these hormones to induce PDK4 mRNA expression. In addition, we identified a hormone-responsive region in the murine PDK4 promoter and characterized a STAT5 binding site in this region that mediates the PRL (sheep) and GH (porcine) induction in PDK4 expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. PDK4 is a STAT5A target gene. PRL is a potent inducer of PDK4 protein levels, results in an inhibition of insulin-stimulated glucose transport in fat cells, and likely contributes to PRL-induced insulin resistance. © 2007 by the American Diabetes Association

    The Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS): The near-infrared luminosity function of nearby galaxy groups

    We present J and K-band luminosity functions (LF) for the Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS) sample of 60 nearby groups of galaxies, with photometry from the 2MASS survey. We find that, as seen in B and R-band photometry of a subsample of these groups in our earlier work, the LFs of the X-ray dim groups (L_X < 10^41.7 erg/s) show a depletion of galaxies of intermediate luminosity around M_K = -23, within a radius 0.3R_500 from the centres of these groups. This feature is not seen in the X-ray brighter groups, nor in either kind of group when the LFs are determined all the way out to R_500. We conclude that an enhanced level of star formation is not responsible for the this feature. From the faint end of the LFs, we find support for the under-abundance of low surface brightness dwarfs in the 2MASS survey. We find that for all kinds of groups, the modelling of the luminosity function, with universal forms for the LFs of galaxies of different morphological types, fails when simultaneously required to fit the B and K-band LFs. This means that the dip-like features seen in LFs are not merely due to the varying proportions of galaxies of different morphological types among the X-ray dim and bright groups. We argue that this support our hypothesis that this feature is due to the enhanced merging of intermediate-mass galaxies in the dynamically sluggish environment of X-ray dim groups.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Assessing the UK policies for broadband adoption

    Broadband technology has been introduced to the business community and the public as a rapid way of exploiting the Internet. The benefits of its use (fast reliable connections, and always on) have been widely realised and broadband diffusion is one of the items at the top of the agenda for technology related polices of governments worldwide. In this paper an examination of the impact of the UK government’s polices upon broadband adoption is undertaken. Based on institutional theory a consideration of the manipulation of supply push and demand pull forces in the diffusion of broadband is offered. Using primary and secondary data sources, an analysis of the specific institutional actions related to IT diffusion as pursued by the UK government in the case of broadband is provided. Bringing the time dimension into consideration it is revealed that the UK government has shifted its attention from supply push-only strategies to more interventional ones where the demand pull forces are also mobilised. It is believed that this research will assist in the extraction of the “success factors” in government intervention that support the diffusion of technology with a view to render favourable results if applied to other national settings

    ARL3 mutations cause Joubert syndrome by disrupting ciliary protein composition

    Joubert syndrome (JBTS) is a genetically heterogeneous autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental ciliopathy. We investigated further the underlying genetic etiology of Joubert syndrome by studying two unrelated families in whom JBTS was not associated with pathogenic variants in known JBTSrelated genes. Combined autozygosity mapping of both families highlighted a candidate locus on chromosome 10 (chr10: 101569997-109106128 (hg 19)), and exome sequencing revealed two missense variants in ARL3 within the candidate locus. The encoded protein, ADP Ribosylation Factor-Like GTPase 3, ARL3, is a small GTP-binding protein that is involved in directing lipid-modified proteins into the cilium in a GTP-dependent manner. Both missense variants replace the highly conserved Arg149 residue, which we show to be necessary for the interaction with its guanine nucleotide exchange factor ARL13B, such that the mutant protein is associated with reduced INPP5E and NPHP3 localisation in cilia. We propose that ARL3 provides a potential hub in the network of encoded ciliopathy genes, whereby perturbation of ARL3 results in the mislocalisation of multiple ciliary proteins due to abnormal displacement of lipidated protein cargo

    Expanding the I-II-V Phase Space: Soft Synthesis of Polytypic Ternary and Binary Zinc Antimonides

    Soft chemistry methods offer the possibility of synthesizing metastable and kinetic products that are unobtainable through thermodynamically-controlled, high-temperature reactions. A recent solution-phase exploration of Li-Zn-Sb phase space revealed a previously unknown cubic half-Heusler MgAgAs-type LiZnSb polytype. Interestingly, this new cubic phase was calculated to be the most thermodynamically stable, despite prior literature reporting only two other ternary phases (the hexagonal half-Heusler LiGaGe-type LiZnSb, and the full-Heusler Li2ZnSb). This surprising discovery, coupled with the intriguing optoelectronic and transport properties of many antimony containing Zintl phases, required a thorough exploration of syn-thetic parameters. Here, we systematically study the effects that different precursor concentrations, injection order, nucleation and growth temperatures, and reaction time have on the solution-phase synthesis of these materials. By doing so, we identify conditions that selectively yield several unique ternary (c-LiZnSb vs. h*-LiZnSb), binary (ZnSb vs. Zn8Sb7), and metallic (Zn, Sb) products. Further, we find one of the ternary phases adopts a variant of the previously observed hexagonal LiZnSb struc-ture. Our results demonstrate the utility of low temperature solution phase—soft synthesis—methods in accessing and mining a rich phase space. We anticipate that this work will motivate further exploration of multinary I-II-V compounds, as well as encourage similarly thorough investigations of related Zintl systems by solution phase methods
