An explicit realization of logarithmic modules for the vertex operator algebra W_{p,p'}
By extending the methods used in our earlier work, in this paper, we present
an explicit realization of logarithmic \mathcal{W}_{p,p'}-modules that have
L(0) nilpotent rank three. This was achieved by combining the techniques
developed in \cite{AdM-2009} with the theory of local systems of vertex
operators \cite{LL}. In addition, we also construct a new type of extension of
, denoted by . Our results confirm several
claims in the physics literature regarding the structure of projective covers
of certain irreducible representations in the principal block. This approach

Logarithmic intertwining operators and vertex operators
This is the first in a series of papers where we study logarithmic
intertwining operators for various vertex subalgebras of Heisenberg vertex
operator algebras. In this paper we examine logarithmic intertwining operators
associated with rank one Heisenberg vertex operator algebra , of
central charge . We classify these operators in terms of {\em depth}
and provide explicit constructions in all cases. Furthermore, for we
focus on the vertex operator subalgebra L(1,0) of and obtain
logarithmic intertwining operators among indecomposable Virasoro algebra
modules. In particular, we construct explicitly a family of {\em hidden}
logarithmic intertwining operators, i.e., those that operate among two ordinary

The N=1 triplet vertex operator superalgebras
We introduce a new family of C_2-cofinite N=1 vertex operator superalgebras
SW(m), , which are natural super analogs of the triplet vertex
algebra family W(p), , important in logarithmic conformal field
theory. We classify irreducible SW(m)-modules and discuss logarithmic modules.
We also compute bosonic and fermionic formulas of irreducible SW(m) characters.
Finally, we contemplate possible connections between the category of
SW(m)-modules and the category of modules for the quantum group
U^{small}_q(sl_2), q=e^{\frac{2 \pi i}{2m+1}}, by focusing primarily on
properties of characters and the Zhu's algebra A(SW(m)). This paper is a

From boundary to bulk in logarithmic CFT
The analogue of the charge-conjugation modular invariant for rational
logarithmic conformal field theories is constructed. This is done by
reconstructing the bulk spectrum from a simple boundary condition (the analogue
of the Cardy `identity brane'). We apply the general method to the c_1,p
triplet models and reproduce the previously known bulk theory for p=2 at c=-2.
For general p we verify that the resulting partition functions are modular
invariant. We also construct the complete set of 2p boundary states, and
confirm that the identity brane from which we started indeed exists. As a
by-product we obtain a logarithmic version of the Verlinde formula for the

Viscoelastic gels of guar and xanthan gum mixtures provide long-term stabilization of iron micro- and nanoparticles
Iron micro- and nanoparticles used for groundwater remediation and medical applications are prone to fast aggregation and sedimentation. Diluted single biopolymer water solutions of guar gum (GG) or xanthan gum (XG) can stabilize these particles for few hours providing steric repulsion and by increasing the viscosity of the suspension. The goal of the study is to demonstrate that amending GG solutions with small amounts of XG (XG/GG weight ratio 1:19; 3 g/L of total biopolymer concentration) can significantly improve the capability of the biopolymer to stabilize highly concentrated iron micro- and nanoparticle suspensions. The synergistic effect between GG and XG generates a viscoelastic gel that can maintain 20 g/L iron particles suspended for over 24 h. This is attributed to (i) an increase in the static viscosity, (ii) a combined polymer structure the yield stress of which contrasts the downward stress exerted by the iron particles, and (iii) the adsorption of the polymers to the iron surface having an anchoring effect on the particles. The XG/GG viscoelastic gel is characterized by a marked shear thinning behavior. This property, coupled with the low biopolymer concentration, determines small viscosity values at high shear rates, facilitating the injection in porous media. Furthermore, the thermosensitivity of the soft elastic polymeric network promotes higher stability and longer storage times at low temperatures and rapid decrease of viscosity at higher temperatures. This feature can be exploited in order to improve the flowability and the delivery of the suspensions to the target as well as to effectively tune and control the release of the iron particle
Radiation Safety in the Treatment of Patients with Thyroid Diseases by Radioiodine 131I: Practice Recommendations of the American Thyroid Association
Background: Radiation safety is an essential component in the treatment of patients with thyroid diseases by 131I. The American Thyroid Association created a task force to develop recommendations that would inform medical professionals about attainment of radiation safety for patients, family members, and the public. The task force was constituted so as to obtain advice, experience, and methods from relevant medical specialties and disciplines. Methods: Reviews of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and International Commission on Radiological Protection recommendations formed the basic structure of recommendations. Members of the task force contributed both ideas and methods that are used at their respective institutions to aid groups responsible for treatments and that instruct patients and caregivers in the attainment of radiation safety. There are insufficient data on long-term outcomes to create evidence-based guidelines. Results: The information was used to compile delineations of radiation safety. Factors and situations that govern implementation of safety practices are cited and discussed. Examples of the development of tables to ascertain the number of hours or days (24-hour cycles) of radiation precaution appropriate for individual patients treated with 131I for hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer have been provided. Reminders in the form of a checklist are presented to assist in assessing patients while taking into account individual circumstances that would bear on radiation safety. Information is presented to supplement the treating physician's advice to patients and caregivers on precautions to be adopted within and outside the home. Conclusion: Recommendations, complying with Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and consistent with guidelines promulgated by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP-155), can help physicians and patients maintain radiation safety after treatment with 131I of patients with thyroid diseases. Both treating physicians and patients must be informed if radiation safety, an integral part of therapy with 131I, is to be attained. Outcomes of truncal vascular injuries in children.
BACKGROUND: Pediatric truncal vascular injuries occur infrequently and have a reported mortality rate of 30% to 50%. This report examines the demographics, mechanisms of injury, associated trauma, and outcome of patients presenting for the past 10 years at a single institution with truncal vascular injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review (1997-2006) of a pediatric trauma registry at a single institution was undertaken.
RESULTS: Seventy-five truncal vascular injuries occurred in 57 patients (age, 12 +/- 3 years); the injury mechanisms were penetrating in 37%. Concomitant injuries occurred with 76%, 62%, and 43% of abdominal, thoracic, and neck vascular injuries, respectively. Nonvascular complications occurred more frequently in patients with abdominal vascular injuries who were hemodynamically unstable on presentation. All patients with thoracic vascular injuries presenting with hemodynamic instability died. In patients with neck vascular injuries, 1 of 2 patients who were hemodynamically unstable died, compared to 1 of 12 patients who died in those who presented hemodynamically stable. Overall survival was 75%.
CONCLUSIONS: Survival and complications of pediatric truncal vascular injury are related to hemodynamic status at the time of presentation. Associated injuries are higher with trauma involving the abdomen
Logarithmic link invariants of U<sup>H</sup><sub>q</sub>(sl<sub>2</sub>) and asymptotic dimensions of singlet vertex algebras
Incidentalomas during imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism—incidence and clinical outcomes
Background: Imaging for pre-operative localisation of parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism is now
routine. This has led to the detection of incidental lesions (incidentalomas) in other organs, the nature of which is
not well characterised.
The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, characteristics and outcomes in patients who had incidental
findings on parathyroid imaging.
Methods: Records of patients who underwent imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism over 2 years were reviewed
to identify incidental lesions detected on parathyroid imaging. Patients with persistent or renal hyperparathyroidism
were excluded. Details on the management of detected incidentalomas were obtained from patient records.
Results: Incidentalomas were identified in 17 of 170 patients (10 %) undergoing parathyroid imaging. Incidentalomas
included thyroid (n = 11), breast (n = 3), lateral compartment of the neck (n = 1), lung (n = 1) and clavicle (n = 1). However,
no disease of clinical significance needing treatment was detected on further investigation.
Conclusions: Although a significant proportion of patients undergoing parathyroid imaging had incidental lesions
detected, these seem to be of little clinical significance. The morbidity and cost of further interventions on these
incidentalomas need to be weighed against the benefits of routine imaging in improving outcomes of first-time
surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Surgeon-Performed Ultrasound as Preoperative Localization Study in Patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism
Background: Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is the treatment of choice for single-gland primary hyperparathyroidism. However, the exact location of the abnormal gland has to be established. Sestamibi scintigraphy, computed tomography and ultrasound (US) are commonly used modalities. We describe our experience in a non-academic center with surgeon-performed US (S-US) of the neck as preoperative localization study in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Methods: Patients with a biochemically proven diagnosis of PHPT and preoperative S-US were included. Data were recorded prospectively. Perioperative gland location was compared to the preoperative S-US to determine sensitivity, specificity and accuracy rates. Results: Two of the 50 patients who underwent S-US were not subjected to surgery. In 85% of the patients analyzed by S-US, the appropriate abnormal gland(s) were identified. In 11%, no gland was identified, but abnormal glands were found during surgery. Sensitivity of S-US in our hospital is 85%, with a positive predictive value of 97%. Conclusions: We achieved a satisfactory sensitivity rate. S-US provides anatomic information to the surgeon which enables a more detailed operation planning, and it is a valuable diagnostic modality for patients with PHPT in our opinion.
