Female blue whale ovarian corpora data were translated and encoded from the USSR’s Slava (1961/62–1965/66) and Sovietskaya Ukraina (1961/62–1971/72) expeditions. Complete ovarian data were available for 1,425 blue whales (1,272 pygmy, 153 Antarctic). Catches north of 52°S were assumed to be pygmy blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda), while those south of 56°S were assumed to be Antarctic (true) blue whales (B. m. intermedia), although there was some evidence for a small proportion (<1%) of both Antarctic blue whales north of 52°S and pygmy blue whales south of 56°S. A small proportion of lengths were rounded to the nearest metre, and many whales shorter than 18.0 were recorded as 18.0 m or greater (whale stretching). A Bayesian logistic model fitted to the data provided estimates of L50 and L95 (the lengths at which 50% and 95% of females are sexually mature). For pygmy blue whales L50 was 19.2 m (95% interval 19.1–19.3 m) and L95 was 20.5 m (95% interval 20.4–20.7 m). These estimates are more precise than those from Japanese data because the Soviet vessels recorded 32 times more pygmy blue whales shorter than the legal minimum length (21.3 m). Among small areas, L50 varied from 18.4 to 19.9 m for pygmy blue whales; all estimates were much shorter than the 23.4 m from the Antarctic. The status of northern Indian Ocean pygmy blue whales is unclear: L50 for these blue whales was statistically significantly shorter than L50 for both the southern Indian Ocean and around Australia, but the magnitude of the differences was small: 0.5–0.6 m

The charge ordered state in half-doped Bi-based manganites studied by 17^{17}O and 209^{209}Bi NMR

We present a 209^{209}Bi and 17^{17}O NMR study of the Mn electron spin correlations developed in the charge ordered state of Bi0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} and Bi0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3}. The unusually large local magnetic field 209Hloc^{209}H_{loc} indicates the dominant 6s26s^{2} character of the lone electron pair of Bi3+^{3+}-ions in both compounds. The mechanism connecting the ss character of the lone pairs to the high temperature of charge ordering TCOT_{CO} is still not clarified. The observed difference in 209Hloc^{209}H_{loc} for Bi0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} to Bi0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} is probably due to a decrease in the canting of the staggered magnetic moments of Mn3+^{3+}-ions from. The modification of the 17^{17}O spectra below TCOT_{CO} demonstrates that the line due to the apical oxygens is a unique local tool to study the development of the Mn spin correlations. In the AF state the analysis of the 17^{17}O spectrum of Pr0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} and Bi0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} prompts us to try two different theoretical descriptions of the charge-ordered state, a site-centered model for the first manganite and a bond-centered model for the second one.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

NMR study of magnetic nanoparticles Ni@C

The 61Ni, 13C NMR spectra of carbon encapsulated nickel nanoparticles have been obtained. It has been shown that the cores of the particles consist of metallic nickel with face-centered cubic structure, nickel carbide Ni3C and carbon-nickel solid solution. The carbon shell of nanoparticles is a highly defective structure and close to an amorphous glassy-like carbon. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, UB RAS: 18-10-2-37.The study was performed within the state assignments of the Mikheev Institute of Metal Physics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences: state program «Function» No АААА-А19-119012990095-0; state program «Magnit» No АААА-А18-118020290129-5 and state program «Alloys». Scaling of Particle and Transverse Energy Production in 208Pb+208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV

Transverse energy, charged particle pseudorapidity distributions and photon transverse momentum spectra have been studied as a function of the number of participants (N_{part}) and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_{coll}) in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions over a wide impact parameter range. A scaling of the transverse energy pseudorapidity density at midrapidity as N_{part}^{1.08 \pm 0.06} and N_{coll}^{0.83 \pm 0.05} is observed. For the charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity we find a scaling as N_{part}^{1.07 \pm 0.04} and N_{coll}^{0.82 \pm 0.03}. This faster than linear scaling with N_{part} indicates a violation of the naive Wounded Nucleon Model.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, submitted to European Physical Journal C (revised results for scaling exponents

Systematics of Inclusive Photon Production in 158 AGeV Pb Induced Reactions on Ni, Nb, and Pb Targets

    Get PDF
The multiplicity of inclusive photons has been measured on an event-by-event basis for 158 AGeV Pb induced reactions on Ni, Nb, and Pb targets. The systematics of the pseudorapidity densities at midrapidity (rho_max) and the width of the pseudorapidity distributions have been studied for varying centralities for these collisions. A power law fit to the photon yield as a function of the number of participating nucleons gives a value of 1.13+-0.03 for the exponent. The mean transverse momentum, , of photons determined from the ratio of the measured electromagnetic transverse energy and photon multiplicity, remains almost constant with increasing rho_max. Results are compared with model predictions.Comment: 16 pages including 4 figure

Centrality Dependence of Neutral Pion Production in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb Collisions

The production of neutral pions in 158AGeV Pb+Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra are studied for the range 0.3 GeV/c < mT-m0 < 4.0 GeV/c. The results for central collisions are compared to various models. The centrality dependence of the neutral pion spectral shape and yield is investigated. An invariance of the spectral shape and a simple scaling of the yield with the number of participating nucleons is observed for centralities with greater than about 30 participating nucleons which is most naturally explained by assuming an equilibrated system.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, including 3 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett; updated pQCD comparison due to new input from the author, updated references, corrected plotting error in figure

A detailed analysis of the phase space distributions of charged particles and photons have been carried out using two independent methods. The results indicate the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in localized regions of phase space.Comment: Talk at the PANIC99 Conference, June 9-16, 199

    Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV/c Studied by Pion-Pion Interferometry

Two-particle correlations have been measured for identified negative pions from central 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions and fitted radii of about 7 fm in all dimensions have been obtained. A multi-dimensional study of the radii as a function of kT is presented, including a full correction for the resolution effects of the apparatus. The cross term Rout-long of the standard fit in the Longitudinally CoMoving System (LCMS) and the vl parameter of the generalised Yano-Koonin fit are compatible with 0, suggesting that the source undergoes a boost invariant expansion. The shapes of the correlation functions in Qinv and Qspace have been analyzed in detail. They are not Gaussian but better represented by exponentials. As a consequence, fitting Gaussians to these correlation functions may produce different radii depending on the acceptance of the experimental setup used for the measurement.Comment: 13 pages including 10 figure
