    Wireless power transfer in magnetic resonance imaging at a higher-order mode of a birdcage coil

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a crucial tool for medical visualization. In many cases, performing a scanning procedure requires the use of additional equipment, which can be powered by wires as well as via wireless power transfer (WPT) or wireless energy harvesting. In this Letter, we propose a novel scheme for WPT that uses a higher-order mode of the MRI scanner's birdcage coil for energy transmission. In contrast to the existing WPT solutions, our approach does not require additional transmitting coils. Compared to the energy harvesting, the proposed method allows supplying significantly more power. We perform numerical simulations demonstrating that one can use the fundamental mode of the birdcage coil to perform a scanning procedure while transmitting the energy to the receiver at a higher-order mode without any interference with the scanning signal or violation of safety constraints, as guaranteed by the mode structure of the birdcage. Also, we evaluate the specific absorption rate along with the energy transfer efficiency and verify our numerical model by a direct comparison with an experimental setup featuring a birdcage coil of a 1.5T MRI scanner.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures + Supplementary Material 10 pages, 7 figure

    To the Problem of Realizing the Provision of Obligations of States under International Treaties

    Target. The purpose of this article is to consider the problems of doctrinal approaches to the implementation of the provision of obligations of states under international treaties. The authors analyze the current principles and doctrines of securing obligations under international treaties, suggest that the fundamental principles of fulfilling state obligations through the prism of the doctrine of jus cogens be considered.Methods. Such methods as: system analysis method, synthesis method, formal-legal method, logical method, analogy method are used in the work.Results and conclusions. The authors suppose that a direct recognition of the principle of conscientious fulfillment of international obligations by a peremptory norm of international law in disputes where all participants agreed to this provision is necessary. The agreement with the “vertical” action of this principle, that is, the extension to national legislation, will allow to minimize, and in some cases to exclude the possibility of refusing to fulfill the obligation due to the decision of the national authority. The use of the jus cogens doctrine as applied to the principles of ensuring the fulfillment of obligations by the states will, to a large extent, allow to move towards legal impact on the states within the framework of international law, and will become an additional element of ensuring the responsibility of the state in fulfilling its obligations arising from international treaties

    Novel D-A-π-A1 Type Organic Sensitizers from 4,7-Dibromobenzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole and Indoline Donors for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

    Two novel D-A-π-A1 metal-free organic dyes of the KEA series containing benzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole (isoBT) internal acceptor, indoline donors fused with cyclopentane or cyclohexane rings (D), a thiophene as a π-spacer, and a cyanoacrylate as an anchor part were synthesized. Monoarylation of 4,7-dibromobenzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole by Suzuki-Miyamura cross-coupling reaction showed that in the case of indoline and carbazole donors, the reaction was non-selective, i.e., two monosubstituted derivatives were isolated in each case, whereas only one mono-isomer was formed with phenyl- and 2-thienylboronic acids. This was explained by the fact that heterocyclic indoline and carbazole fragments are much stronger donor groups compared to thiophene and benzene, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry measurements and calculation of HOMO energies of indoline, carbazole, thiophene and benzene molecules. The structure of monoaryl(hetaryl) derivatives was strictly proven by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The optical and photovoltaic properties observed for the KEA dyes showed that these compounds are promising for the creation of solar cells. A comparison with symmetrical benzo[c][1,2,3]thiadiazole dyes WS-2 and MAX114 showed that the asymmetric nature of benzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole KEA dyes leads to a hypsochromic shift of the ICT band in comparison with the corresponding benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole isomers. KEA dyes have a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap of 1.5–1.6 eV. Amongst these dyes, KEA321 recorded the best power efficiency (PCE), i.e., 5.17%, which is superior to the corresponding symmetrical benzo[c][1,2,3]thiadiazole dyes WS-2 and MAX114 (5.07 and 4.90%)

    Modeling a Nociceptive Neuro-Immune Synapse Activated by ATP and 5-HT in Meninges : Novel Clues on Transduction of Chemical Signals Into Persistent or Rhythmic Neuronal Firing

    Extracellular ATP and serotonin (5-HT) are powerful triggers of nociceptive firing in the meninges, a process supporting headache and whose cellular mechanisms are incompletely understood. The current study aimed to develop, with the neurosimulator NEURON, a novel approach to explore in silico the molecular determinants of the long-lasting, pulsatile nature of migraine attacks. The present model included ATP and 5-HT release, ATP diffusion and hydrolysis, 5-HT uptake, differential activation of ATP P2X or 5-HT3 receptors, and receptor subtype-specific desensitization. The model also tested the role of branched meningeal fibers with multiple release sites. Spike generation and propagation were simulated using variable contribution by potassium and sodium channels in a multi-compartment fiber environment. Multiple factors appeared important to ensure prolonged nociceptive firing potentially relevant to long-lasting pain. Crucial roles were observed in: (i) co-expression of ATP P2X2 and P2X3 receptor subunits; (ii) intrinsic activation/inactivation properties of sodium Nav1.8 channels; and (iii) temporal and spatial distribution of ATP/5-HT release sites along the branches of trigeminal nerve fibers. Based on these factors we could obtain either persistent activation of nociceptive firing or its periodic bursting mimicking the pulsating nature of pain. In summary, our model proposes a novel tool for the exploration of peripheral nociception to test the contribution of clinically relevant factors to headache including migraine pain.Peer reviewe

    The role of the meningeal lymphatic system in local meningeal inflammation and trigeminal nociception

    A system of lymphatic vessels has been recently characterized in the meninges, with a postulated role in 'cleaning' the brain via cerebral fluid drainage. As meninges are the origin site of migraine pain, we hypothesized that malfunctioning of the lymphatic system should affect the local trigeminal nociception. To test this hypothesis, we studied nociceptive and inflammatory mechanisms in the hemiskull preparations (containing the meninges) of K14-VEGFR3-Ig (K14) mice lacking the meningeal lymphatic system. We recorded the spiking activity of meningeal afferents and estimated the local mast cells population, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and cytokine levels as well as the dural trigeminal innervation in freshly-isolated hemiskull preparations from K14-VEGFR3-Ig (K14) or wild type C57BL/6 mice (WT). Spiking activity data have been confirmed in an acquired model of meningeal lymphatic dysfunction (AAV-mVEGFR3(1-4)Ig induced lymphatic ablation). We found that levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL12-p70 and CGRP, implicated in migraine, were reduced in the meninges of K14 mice, while the levels of the mast cell activator MCP-1 were increased. The other migraine-related pro-inflammatory cytokines (basal and stimulated), did not differ between the two genotypes. The patterns of trigeminal innervation in meninges remained unchanged and we did not observe alterations in basal or ATP-induced nociceptive firing in the meningeal afferents associated with meningeal lymphatic dysfunction. In summary, the lack of meningeal lymphatic system is associated with a new balance between pro- and anti-migraine mediators but does not directly trigger meningeal nociceptive state.Peer reviewe
