    An Integrated Pest Management Tool for Evaluating Schools

    Having the ability to assess pest problems in schools is essential for a successful integrated pest management (IPM) program. However, such expertise can be costly and is not available to all school districts across the United States. The web-based IPM Calculator was developed to address this problem. By answering questions about the condition of a building and the behaviors of individuals who use it, any pest management professional or building manager can use the IPM Calculator to assess pest risk at a school campus and obtain IPM-based solutions to reduce that pest risk.     Utilizing the mental health nursing workforce:A scoping review of mental health nursing clinical roles and identities

    Despite rising international needs for mental health practitioners, the mental health nursing workforce is underutilized. This is in part due to limited understandings of their roles, identities, and capabilities. This paper aimed to collate and synthesize published research on the clinical roles of mental health nurses in order to systematically clarify their professional identity and potential. We searched for eligible studies, published between 2001 and 2021, in five electronic databases. Abstracts of retrieved studies were independently screened against exclusion and inclusion criteria (primarily that studies reported on the outcomes associated with mental health nursing roles). Decisions of whether to include studies were through researcher consensus guided by the criteria. The search yielded 324 records, of which 47 were included. Retained papers primarily focused on three themes related to mental health nursing clinical roles and capabilities. Technical roles included those associated with psychotherapy, consumer safety, and diagnosis. Non-technical roles and capabilities were also described. These included emotional intelligence, advanced communication, and reduction of power differentials. Thirdly, the retained papers reported the generative contexts that influenced clinical roles. These included prolonged proximity with consumers with tensions between therapeutic and custodial roles. The results of this scoping review suggest the mental health nurses (MHNs) have a wide scope of technical skills which they employ in clinical practice. These roles are informed by a distinctive cluster of non-technical capabilities to promote the well-being of service users. They are an adaptable and underutilized component of the mental health workforce in a context of escalating unmet needs for expert mental health care

    Informing the development of a fit-for-purpose mental health nursing curriculum: A survey of mental health nurse academics in Australia

    Inadequate mental health nursing content in pre-registration nursing curricula has been the topic of debate and concern since the introduction of comprehensive nursing education in Australia. Government-initiated inquiries and the efforts of mental health professional organizations and leaders have not successfully addressed this problem. The aim of the current study was to garner the perspectives and experiences of mental health nurse academics regarding the adequacy of mental health content in producing graduates able to work effectively in mental health settings and identify barriers and enablers to implementing and sustaining sufficient mental health content in pre-registration programs. A survey was distributed to mental health academics in Australian universities offering pre-registration nursing degrees. In total, 44 complete responses were included in the analysis. The results demonstrated the following: Most participants considered the current mental health content, theory and clinical hours insufficient to prepare graduates for practice in mental health settings. They reported a scarcity of tenured mental health nurse academics to deliver content effectively. Most participants were dissatisfied with the comprehensive approach to nurse education and preferred a double degree (nursing and mental health nursing), or a direct entry mental health nursing program. These findings provide further evidence for the current crisis in mental health nursing education and highlight the need for urgent action. People accessing health services have the right to receive high-quality care from appropriately qualified nurses. The inadequacy of mental health content in these programs effectively denies vulnerable people the standard of care and treatment they should be entitled to

    Car Cabin Filters as Sampling Devices to Study Bioaerosols Using eDNA and Microbiological Methods

    The aim of this study was to examine whether bioaerosols could be isolated and quantified from used car cabin filters. Car cabin filters are widely available and can provide a vast untapped resource for sampling of bioaerosols in areas with enhanced air pollution. We developed a test system where we exposed car cabin filters to birch pollen under compressed air to represent airflow onto the filter. The flow of pollen within the test system was confirmed by microscopy and real-time PCR. Testing of extraction methods was performed on the most prevalent types of filters in UK cars and confirmed it was possible to extract and quantify viable fungi, birch pollen or proteins from car filters. The main challenge of their use is envisaged to be the lack of temporal resolution as car cabin filters are not routinely changed at intervals greater than 1 year; however, the systematic recording of the different routes driven during the sampling interval has been enabled through the common use of GPS, smartphones or similar technologies. Car filters therefore provide substantial possibilities to monitor exposure of harmful bioaerosols in the polluted traffic regions defined by the road network. This method could also be applied to studying allergen exposure associated with bioaerosols and their delivery into the human respiratory system. These findings demonstrate that car cabin filters have the potential to be used to isolate and quantify a range of bioaerosols including pollen and fungi, as well as fractions of bioaerosols, such as proteins

    Perceived barriers and facilitators to Risk Based Monitoring in academic-led clinical trials: a mixed methods study.

    BACKGROUND: In November 2016, the ICH published a requirement for sponsors to develop a systematic, prioritised, risk-based approach to monitoring clinical trials. This approach is more commonly known as risk-based monitoring (RBM). However, recent evidence suggests that a 'gold standard', validated approach to RBM does not exist and it is unclear how sponsors will introduce RBM into their organisations. A first step needed to inform the implementation of RBM is to explore academic trialists' readiness and ability to perform RBM. The aim of this paper is to identify the attitudes and perceived barriers and facilitators to the implementation of RBM in academic-led clinical trials in Ireland. METHODS: This is a mixed-methods, explanatory sequential design, with quantitative survey followed by semistructured interviews. Academic clinical researchers (N = 132) working in Ireland were surveyed to examine their use and perceptions of RBM. A purposive sample of survey participants (n = 22) were then interviewed to gain greater insight into the quantitative findings. The survey and interview data were merged to generate a list of perceived barriers and facilitators to RBM implementation, with suggestions for, and solutions to, these issues. RESULTS: Survey response rate was 49% (132/273). Thirteen percent (n = 18) of responders were not familiar with the term risk-based monitoring and less than a quarter of respondents (21%, n = 28) had performed RBM in a clinical trial. Barriers to RBM implementation included lack of RBM knowledge/training, increased costs caused by greater IT demands, increased workload for trial staff and lack of evidence to support RBM as an effective monitoring approach. Facilitators included participants' legal obligation to perform RBM under the new ICH-GCP guidelines, availability of RBM guidance and perception of cost savings by performing RBM in future trials. CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrate a need for training and regulatory-endorsed guidelines to support the implementation of RBM in academic-led clinical trials. The study provides valuable insights to inform interventions and strategies by policy-makers and clinical trial regulators to improve RBM uptake

    Scanning Probe Microscopy for Nanoscale Characterization of Electrical and Magnetic Properties

    Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a nanoscale scanning probe microscopy (SPM) characterization technique useful for obtaining topographical maps of surfaces and their associated nanomechanical properties. Complementary SPM modes such as Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) can simultaneously elucidate the electrical and magnetic properties of materials with nanoscale resolution, thereby expanding AFM’s utility. KPFM measures the Volta potential difference between a conductive AFM probe and the sample surface, which can be related back to the work function of the material and correlated with co-localized elemental mapping via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). This can be useful for understanding and predicting initiation and propagation of galvanic corrosion in metal alloys. MFM employs a magnetized AFM probe tip to detect magnetic interactions between the sample and the tip, thereby mapping out the magnetic structure of the sample surface. Here we present KPFM studies of case-hardened stainless steels engineered for bearing applications in high performance jet engines destined for operation in corrosive marine environments. MFM studies of Ni-Mn-Ga, a magnetic shape memory alloy, connect experimental data with computational modeling to understand the growth of twins in response to bending. Together, these studies highlight the widespread applicability of AFM, KPFM, MFM, and other SPM techniques for illuminating nanoscale structure-property relationships in material systems
