    The purpose of this study was to compare the cushioning effect of three top rated running shoes and a new spring shoe technology. Shoes were mechanically dropped onto an AMTI force platform. The average in peak forces and the time to peak force were calculated to compare cushioning effect over multiple trials. The Nike and the Spira were found to be significantly better in both cushioning variables than the Adidas and Asics, but not significantly different from each other

    The purpose of the study was to compare the cushioning effect of the Nike Air Pegasus 2004 and the Spira Volare IITM during running. Measured variables were peak force, peak force relative to body weight and time-to-peak force. It was determined that time-to-peak force was not significantly different (p=0.1745) between the Spira and the Nike. There were significant differences found in peak force values (p=0.0184) with Nike exhibiting higher forces than Spira. Peak forces normalized to body weight exhibited a significant shoe by gender interaction (p=0.032). Further analysis revealed the Nike had significantly higher forces than the Spira for females (p=0.0048) but not for males (p=0.8544). It was concluded that the Spira Volare II is similar to the Nike Air Pegasus 2004 in time-to-peak force but significantly lower in peak forces, particularly for females

    System-dependent image distortion related to gantry positions of a 0.35 T MRgRT: Characterization and the corresponding correction

    PURPOSE: MR-guided radiotherapy with high accuracy treatment planning requires addressing MR imaging artifacts that originate from system imperfections. This work presents the characterization and corresponding correction of gantry-related imaging distortions including geometric distortion and isocenter shift in a 0.35 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) system using distortion vector fields (DVFs). METHODS: Two phantoms, the magnetic resonance imaging distortion in 3D (MRID RESULTS: Geometric distortion with mean (± SD) distortion of 3.2 ± 0.02, 2.9 ± 0.02, and 1.8 ± 0.01 mm and isocenter shift (±SD) of 0.49 ± 0.3, 0.05 ± 0.2, and 0.01 ± 0.03 mm were present in the DstOff MRID CONCLUSION: The gantry-related MR imaging distortion including geometric distortion and isocenter shift was characterized and a corresponding correction was demonstrated using extended DVFs on 0.35 T MRgRT system. The characterized gantry-related isocenter shift can be combined with geometric distortion correction to provide a technique for the correction of the full system-dependent distortion in an MRgRT system

    β-Glucan is a major growth substrate for human gut bacteria related to Coprococcus eutactus

    A clone encoding carboxymethyl cellulase activity was isolated during functional screening of a human gut metagenomic library using Lactococcus lactis MG1363 as heterologous host. The insert carried a glycoside hydrolase family 9 (GH9) catalytic domain with sequence similarity to a gene from Coprococcus eutactus ART55/1. Genome surveys indicated a limited distribution of GH9 domains among dominant human colonic anaerobes. Genomes of C. eutactus-related strains harboured two GH9-encoding and four GH5-encoding genes, but the strains did not appear to degrade cellulose. Instead, they grew well on β-glucans and one of the strains also grew on galactomannan, galactan, glucomannan and starch. Coprococcus comes and Coprococcus catus strains did not harbour GH9 genes and were not able to grow on β-glucans. Gene expression and proteomic analysis of C. eutactus ART55/1 grown on cellobiose, β-glucan and lichenan revealed similar changes in expression in comparison to glucose. On β-glucan and lichenan only, one of the four GH5 genes was strongly upregulated. Growth on glucomannan led to a transcriptional response of many genes, in particular a strong upregulation of glycoside hydrolases involved in mannan degradation. Thus, β-glucans are a major growth substrate for species related to C. eutactus, with glucomannan and galactans alternative substrates for some strains

    The eastern Pacific black ghost shark, Hydrolagus melanophasma is reported from deep waters off Chile and is described from specimens collected off Valdivia at depths of 1150 to 1720 m. This species is distinguished from all other members of the genus by its large, curved dorsal fin spine, which extends beyond the dorsal fin apex; a second dorsal fin of uniform height along the caudal peduncle; large pectoral fins extending beyond the pelvic fin insertion; and a uniform black color of the body. Catch records of this species in Chile suggest a discontinuous distribution along the continental slope of the eastern Pacific Ocean, restricted to the Middle America and Atacama trenches. These observations elevate the number of chimaeroid fishes inhabiting Chile to five species

    A pathogen complex between the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita and Fusarium verticillioides results in extreme mortality of the inka nut (Plukenetia volubilis)

    The combined infection of the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita and two Fusarium species led to high plant mortality of inka nut (Plukenetia volubilis) seedlings in pots after 80 days growth in two independent inoculation experiments. Inoculation of M. incognita juveniles and conidia of F. solani or F. verticillioides, simultaneously, increased plant mortality by 25-30%, compared with M. incognita alone (5-10% mortality). When inoculated with F. verticillioides at 20 days post nematode inoculation, plant mortality increased to 55%. Either of the Fusarium spp. alone caused some plant mortality, but less than when combined with M. incognita. The synergistic interaction of M. incognita and especially F. verticillioides demonstrates a lethal outcome for inka nuts. It appears that M. incognita creates favorable conditions that lead to enhanced effect and damage by the Fusarium species, especially F. verticillioides, leading to devastating levels of plant death
