Observatory's linguistic landscape: semiotic appropriation and the reinvention of space
Using a longitudinal ethnographic study of the linguistic landscape (LL) in
Observatory's business corridor of Lower Main Road, the paper explores changes
brought about by the influx of immigrant Africans, their artefacts and language
practices. The paper uses the changes in the LL over time and the development of an
"African Corner" within Lower Main Road, to illustrate the appropriation of space and
the unpredictability, which comes along with highly mobile, technological and
multicultural citizens. It is argued that changes in the LL are part of the act of claiming
and appropriating space wherein space becomes summarily recontexualized and hence
reinvented and "owned" by new actors. It is also argued that space ownership can be
concealed through what we have called "brand anonymity" strategies in which the
identity of the owner is deliberately concealed behind global brands. We conclude that
space is pliable and mobile, and that, it is the people within space who carve out new
social practices in their appropriated space.IBS

Avatars of Eurocentrism in the critique of the liberal peace
Recent scholarly critiques of the so-called liberal peace raise important political and ethical challenges to practices of postwar intervention in the global South. However, their conceptual and analytic approaches have tended to reproduce rather than challenge the intellectual Eurocentrism underpinning the liberal peace. Eurocentric features of the critiques include the methodological bypassing of target subjects in research, the analytic bypassing of subjects through frameworks of governmentality, the assumed ontological split between the ‘liberal’ and the ‘local’, and a nostalgia for the liberal subject and the liberal social contract as alternative bases for politics. These collectively produce a ‘paradox of liberalism’ that sees the liberal peace as oppressive but also the only true source of emancipation. However, the article suggests that a repoliticization of colonial difference offers an alternative ‘decolonizing’ approach to critical analysis through repositioning the analytic gaze. Three alternative research strategies for critical analysis are briefly developed

The Football Supporter in a Cosmopolitan Epoch
Arguably, the later process of globalization served to reshape how socializations are fostered and maintained across time and space. Additionally, in the last fifteen years a new phenomenon that reinvigorated time and space compression has emerged: social media. Moreover, it is argued that the conjunction of those processes can be seen as taking place on a distinct Age - the Anthropocene or the cosmopolitan epoch. Arguably those processes have the capacity to alter the way individuals enact their football fandom In this light, this paper seeks to conceptualize one particular football support identity that takes into account this fragmented period. Based on an 18-month ethnographic research with supporters of one English Premier League, this paper conceptualizes the football fan in the Anthropocene as the cosmopolitan flâneur. I conclude by pointing out to some prospective avenues for future research based on a cosmopolitan imagination
On biocoloniality and 'respectability' in contemporary London.
This essay is framed by discussions on the civil unrest in British cities in 2011, the politics of austerity, the mass unemployment of the young, ‘the war on terror’ and ‘radicalisation’ and the vulnerability of the poor and ‘unrespectable’. It advances a concept of biocoloniality and explores ‘respectability’, class and transnational postcolonial urban cultures in contemporary London. The essay argues for a theorisation which can account for how a divided subject produces the effect of an undivided and self-governing ‘core self’ who ‘possesses’ distinguishing ‘biological’ ‘capacities’, ‘psychological’ attributes’ and cultural ‘characteristics’. It considers how this is accomplished through our daily practical activity such as our ‘imaginable’, ‘possible’ sexual desires, everyday practices of reflection, our bodily demeanour and bodily significations. This concept of biocoloniality is composed of two theoretical strands. In ‘on inscription and creolisation’ and in dialogue with a single respondent on ‘respectability’ and ‘beauty’, I entwine disparate theoretical threads from work on biopolitics and governmentality, racialisation, psychoanalysis and postcoloniality and performativity, sexualisation and intersectionality together. I forward a formulation of inscription that can reveal how we inscribe and sculpt our own and other bodies with different ‘capacities’ and ‘qualities’. I then tie strands of work on repetition together and advance a theorisation of reiteration. I consider how we struggle with, overcome and are defeated by ourselves as we reinscribe our own and other bodies. The essay thus considers how it is through in part our daily biocolonial practice that different bodies that are closer to and more distant from notions of the human, the un/respectable, un/desirable, ab/normal, ir/replaceable and expendable come into being and how this unsettles clear distinctions between coloniality and postcoloniality
Internationalisation and migrant academics: the hidden narratives of mobility
Internationalisation is a dominant policy discourse in higher education today. It is invariably presented as an ideologically neutral, coherent, disembodied, knowledgedriven policy intervention - an unconditional good. Yet it is a complex assemblage of values linked not only to economic growth and prosperity, but also to global citizenship, transnational identity capital, social cohesion, intercultural competencies and soft power (Clifford and Montgomery 2014; De Wit et al. 2015; Kim 2017; Lomer 2016; Stier 2004). Mobility is the sine qua non of the global academy (Sheller 2014). International movements, flows and networks are perceived as valuable transnational and transferable identity capital and as counterpoints to intellectual parochialism. Fluidity metaphors abound as an antidote to stasis e.g. flows, flux and circulations (Urry 2007). For some, internationalisation is conceptually linked to the political economy of neoliberalism and the spatial extension of the market, risking commodification and commercialisation (Matus and Talburt 2009). Others raise questions about what/whose knowledge is circulating and whether internationalisation is a form of re-colonisation and convergence that seeks to homogenise higher education systems (Stromquist 2007). Internationalisation policies and practices, it seems, are complex entanglements of economic, political, social and affective domains. They are mechanisms for driving the global knowledge 2 economy and the fulfilment of personal aspirations (Hoffman 2009). Academic geographical mobility is often conflated with social mobility and career advancement (Leung 2017). However, Robertson (2010: 646) suggested that ‘the romance of movement and mobility ought to be the first clue that this is something we ought to be particularly curious about.
O pesquisador como o outro: uma leitura pós-colonial do "Borat" Brasileiro
This paper discusses the application of the ethnographic method in management research. Specifically, it aims to examine how colonial differences preserve social hierarchies that end up being expressed in the practice of scientific research. Using data gathered during an ethnography conducted in a British organization, the analysis addresses how the Brazilian researcher is perceived by Europeans. To analyze this process, we drawn on the postcolonial perspective, especially in its critique of the Eurocentrism and its critique of the desire to develop a universal knowledge. The results demonstrate that even in the role of researcher, when the non-European subject takes the European subject as the Other in the research process, he ends up being the target of an inversion that moves him back to the position of the Other, perceived by the traditional epistemology as research object of European subject.Neste artigo, discutimos a aplicação do método etnográfico na pesquisa científica em Administração. Especificamente, ele tem por objetivo analisar como diferenças de cunho colonial preservam hierarquias sociais que acabam se manifestando na prática desse gênero de pesquisa. Resultado de uma etnografia realizada em uma organização britânica, a análise aborda como o pesquisador brasileiro é percebido pelo pesquisado europeu. Para compreender essa relação, utilizamos a abordagem pós-colonial e sua crítica ao eurocentrismo e à sua pretensão de alcançar um conhecimento universal. Os resultados permitem concluir que mesmo na função de pesquisador, o sujeito não europeu, ao tomar o sujeito europeu como o Outro da pesquisa, torna-se alvo de uma inversão que o desloca de volta para a posição do Outro, visto pela epistemologia tradicional como objeto de pesquisa do sujeito europeu.En este artículo discutimos la aplicación del método etnográfico en la investigación científica en Administración. Específicamente, el artículo tiene por objetivo analizar cómo diferencias de carácter colonial preservan jerarquías sociales que acaban manifestándose en la práctica de ese género de investigación. Resultado de una etnografía realizada en una organización británica, el análisis aborda cómo el investigador brasileño es percibido por el investigado europeo. Para comprender esa relación, utilizamos el abordaje poscolonial y su crítica al eurocentrismo y a su pretensión de alcanzar un conocimiento universal. Los resultados permiten concluir que aun en la función de investigador, el sujeto no europeo, al tomar al sujeto europeo como el Otro de la investigación, se convierte en objeto de una inversión que lo coloca de vuelta en la posición del Otro, visto por la epistemología tradicional como objeto de investigación del sujeto europeo

Rethinking Radical Democracy
Over the course of three decades, vocabularies of radical democracy have pressed their stamp on democratic thought. Trading on the intuition that there is more to democracy than elections, they have generated critical insights into the important role that practices of pluralisation and critique play in bettering institutional politics. As a result, few would today deny the radical democratic contribution to democratic thought. What many might question, however, is its continuing traction. The paper probes this question, focusing on the nuanced place of democracy in contemporary radical work. It grapples with the difficulties that this poses for radical democrats and it suggests that a way of overcoming these difficulties – that threaten to undermine the coherence of radical democracy – is to rethink and reconstruct the distinctiveness of its vocabulary. The paper attempts such a reconstruction. It develops the idea of the promissory rule of the many and it discusses the ways it rejuvenates broader democratic thought
